Interview season is upon us, what will we wear?!?!

I'm thinking of a skirt suit because I want to be really feminine, but perhaps a pant suit is best...

I bought a new pants suit, dark with faint pin stripes. I've just gotta pick out a cute nice shirt to go with it.

Yeah, I'm going to wear a pant suit. I still have to get it, but I might buy the skirt as well just so I have it for later (hard to match fabrics later)

I don't think it really matters if it is a pants suit or a skirt suit. I personally got a skirt suit and a pant suit. I feel as though I will wear the skirt more because I like it 🙂

What about things other than the suit? Is it normal to bring a small solid color bag to put wallet, cell phone etc.? Or should I get a really small wallet, like business card case to put only the essentials in and forget about the cell phone?

I think a bag is fine. You'll need one if you decide to bring materials to take notes, which I don't think is uncommon.

Hey ladies! Either a pant suit or skirt suit is fine --- both were worn by my fellow classmates.

What I was going to recommend was tucking away a cute pair of loafers in a bag you bring for the interview. Best advice ever given to me! They were really nice when we were walking all over campus for the tours.

As for size bag...mine was large. Kinda like a feminine briefcase size. I had purse contents in one side, shoes in another, and a notebook in another side! It was perfect.

Good luck!

I got a nice black skirt suit on sale at Banana Republic, I'm wearing a feminine (but not flashy) magenta blouse for some color, and of course pantyhose with black heels. I also plan on bringing a black bag large enough for some flats as toothytay suggested 🙂

A question for anyone who has gone on interviews: Roughly how much walking is involved? Is it usually just a tour of the building or a tour of the entire campus? I have interviews at Western, Nova, and Midwestern so far (I assume the answer may vary depending on the school).

I have never found a pair of suit pants that were flattering or comfortable on me, so i definitely will be going with some kind of skirt. Do you think a structured \ sheath dress with a jacket would be appropriate?

Ok maybe that one not so much but those dresses are so pretty wyah!!

I asked someone who used to sit on an admissions committee about wearing a dress, and he indicated that a structured dress (like this one) with a jacket would be very appropriate. He also said hose were not necessary. In fact, if you are interviewing someplace warm (like Arizona), you would probably look ridiculous wearing hose in 100+ degree heat. Save nice sheer black hose for interviews in cold places and the dead of winter. 🙂

Bring a bicycle.

J/K

There is a lot of walking during interviews. 😀

i totally agree. i mean, if i were adcom, and you came in to an interview with a bikini on, not only would u stand out above all the lame girls wearing boring skirts, but i would totally admit u 😛

Which is probably why you're a student, not an adcom!

lol ur funny.. thats seems more an outfit for a special occasion.. that is NOT suitable for dental school

Anyone know if there are any sales going on?

what kinda hair style r u ladies planing on having? I'm thinking of doing a simple updo but don't wanna go overboard. I've heard of ppl going in with their hair down but i don't know if that's professional enough!? any thoughts or recommendations? thx

I have always been advised to tie my hair securely and away from my face, somehow tied hair just gives a more neat/polished look. My hair is a longer though...almost to my waist..

I thought the rule was if you have really long hair tie it back, otherwise leave it down. My hair is about shoulder length. I am just going to bobby pin my bangs back.

This thread is worthless without pics.

I have both if you need to borrow... 😉

Rach, i think that would be fine!

I just got my suit today! its a heather grey skirt suit from Express, the pants suits didnt look normal on me 😀

I think that would be fine as well.

I'm wearing this jacket with a solid black pencil skirt:

Thanks for the advice ladies, both of your outfits are very cute! I'm glad others are also looking for an alternative to a black suit.

i looooveee that jacket! so cool and different

Lovely, i can't wait to wear mine either! soo cute 🙂 and maybe i'm wrong but i feel like you need to be somewhat tall to pull off a full pants suit, i'm short and they just really overwhelmed my frame

now what's everyone thinking to accessorize with?? 🙂

Ok well I bought a "structured" grey collared dress to wear for my interview. I recently bought some heels, but my mother thinks they may be too tall and that I need to go with flats. What do you think? Here are the shoes I bought.

I really love the shoe. Do you think that Adcom's prefer flats to heels? I am just super short (5'1... maybe 5'2" on a good day)... and I just like heels because they make me feel more normal. haha any ideas?

As for accessories, I am going to sport some black stud or diamond earrings.

For hair, I have long blonde hair that goes halfway down my back, and I will pull it up in some sort of simple updo....

Ok thats what I am doing... any suggestions? Does any of that sound taboo?

what type of shirt are you guys wearing underneath the jacket?

I'm wearing a ruffle shirt...a pencil skirt that is fitted and a nice suit jacket...what about jewlery? i was thinking of wearing my tiffany beads? also...i know there was a previous thread on this but I am planning on not wearing panty hose

studygirl, I'm 5'4" and got 2.5" heels to wear with my outfit. i personally think those are fine, esp if your dress goes to your knees. 🙂

this is the shirt i got for under, its not that low on me tho:

and i have a white gold necklace, its just a plain beaded chain, that my gramma bought for me that i think i'm going to wear with a pair of matching stud earrings (i also have a really pretty pair of pearl drop earring but idk if thats too much). and i was thinking of wearing a pretty watch too....

Italianprincess, that shirt is cute! I think it will look great underneath a jacket.

As for jewelry, it should something simple. I'm thinking pearl studs?

@italianprincess....that sounds cute and that shirt is awesome....actually my ruffle shirt is also from express and they always have their cut that low but yea you never see any cleavage so its all good....I think that pearls, beads, simple classic jewlery looks good and professional and is perfect. I want to be girly but still professional haha....you have your interview at NYU a little bit before mine! You'll have to let me know how your outfit compares to the other interviewees

The shoes are definitely cute, but I think the most important thing here is comfort...as long as you can walk in them, you're good to go. You don't want to be the girl hobbling along, trying to keep up with the rest of the tour group!

Oh man, this brings me back.. I almost wish I were interviewing again. I look killer in my suit. :meanie:

I was also wondering if a jacket is necessary. I've looked around and jackets just don't fit me well (I have a really small, petite build). They make my shoulders look huge like football players and just make me look even smaller!

Also... what is the conclusion on the pantyhose??? to wear or not to wear?

pennpaki, don't think you will feel comfortable wearing a sleeveless blouse with no jacket or cardigan. i'm going to be wearing a suit, and so will most interview-ees. that outfit is beautiful, you should get that. i know the ann taylor where i live was doing a huge sale a few days ago where you get 40 percent off your total purchase, it might still be going on.

Hey Ladies! Congrats on all the interviews! 🙂

I just graduated from dental school and was privileged enough to be the student voting member on the admission committee my last year. Every week I would give tours the interviewees and this would be my advice:

· Wear something that makes you feel confident, the worse mistake would be wearing something that makes you uncomfortable
· Don't wear anything distracting, ie too much make up, really junky jewelry
· Same goes for your hair, if you're going to be messing with it or pulling it out of your face all day, put it back.
· Either Pant or Skirt suits are fine but...BIG BUT.... if you skirt is too short or too tight (or both) it can make everyone else extremely uncomfortable. It's ok to look feminine but not suggestive.
· I would recommend a suit jacket, you want to look very professional and nothing is more professional than that.
· This is not the time to show off you super trendy style, but do try to be memorable ie, non-black suit or blouse/dress shirt in a flattering color.
· Heels only if you are prepared to take a tour in them. Flats are fine too. Or bring both as some have suggested.
· Bag/Purses are fine, but I would recommend something simple, still non-distracting, you may be carrying with you all day.
· As for hose, definitely your call based on the climate, but to be on the safe side, I would wear them.

Bottom line, your fashion sense is not going to get you in, but if you feel good and have confidence then that will show through. On the other hand, if you look inappropriate or are distracting in some way, it could hurt your chances and take away from how people perceive you!

:luck: Good Luck, feel free to PM me if you have additional dental school questions!

Thanks for ur advice toothfairy 2010!!! I have a structured black dress which is sleeveless but very conservative and cant rly afford or find any blazer that fits me........do u think its ok without??? I dont want to feel uncomfrotable if everyone is wearing a blazer.

I generally feel that sleeveless dresses like that alone = business casual, so not really appropriate for interviews unless you add a jacket. I think it's better to err on the side of caution.

yeah, try to at least get a nice cardigan to wear with the dress if you absolutely cant find a blazer. sleeveless is too casual.

Having your shoulders show is a big no-no, even if you have a valid reason. A cardigan would work but I think you can pretty much bet everyone else will have a jacket on; it doesn't have to be fancy or expensive...or even yours! Is there anyone you can borrow a jacket from? That would be my suggestion but if you can't find anything, I would maybe wear a dress shirt with pants or skirt instead, just so your arms aren't exposed. Good Luck though!
