Upstate High Priority Alternate List?

Does anyone know anything about the "High Priority Alternate List" at Upstate? Is this really different from the regular wait list? What are the chances of getting in off the HPA List?

Damn. Upstate was my first choice.
 
I don't want to damper any hope, but I don't think that there has been very much movement on that list in the last couple of years. I'm sure that there are a handful of students to get in off that list. I was on the HPL last year and did not make it in, but I could have been on the bottom of the list for all I know. I wish you the best of luck though.

I know many Upstate students who were on the HPA list last year. The regular waitlist, I am told, is basically a rejection as they have not gotten to it in the last several years. Be sure to update them if you have more info. (publications, new grades etc.). Good luck!
 
I remember being told at the interview that if you call the admissions office, one or two people there have the authority to tell you where you are on that list. I was also informed today that I'm on the high-priority list. I'm not sure how it works at Upstate, but if it is your first choice, writing a letter of intent may help. Good luck.
 
just curious, when did you guys (those of you who recently heard, that is) interview at syracuse? i interviewed almost 4 weeks ago and haven't heard anything yet (i'm on long island).

oh, and from what i remember jennifer welch saying, they can't tell you your exact rank on the hpa list, but they will be able to tell you your approximate position on the list (as "near the top," "near the bottom," etc)

So all interviewees past mid-Jan are getting wait-listed/rejected? Doesn't make sense and they sure didn't mention it when I interviewed. Also, what do you mean by "they filled the class", they had already offered 350-450 acceptances? Hard to believe.
 
yeah i dont think i agree with that idea...I was offered a spot just last week and they were also still interviewing people so I don't think the class is full yet.

my application was in around oct/nov and i interviewed jan. 30/31 and received a phone call last thursday
 
hmmm. styphon, my boyfriend interviewed today and was told there are still spots open. same thing as above though about High priority and wait list. wait list = rejection (no one got in in past 4 yrs) and high priority = a chance.

my guess is that by "filling the class" they've offered enough acceptances to fill their class. i don't remember how big their class is but i think it's around 120. so they've probably offered 120 spots and that's all they can offer right now. as spots open up, they'll start pulling off their list (until they get into the 350-400 range and fill their class). this is just my take on it. upstate admissions posts on SDN, if they catch the thread, maybe they'll shed some light. best of luck to all of you, maybe i'll see you around next year... :luck:
 
Are L.O.I useful for UPSTATE? I remember they were saying you get ranked, so I do not think so. Anybody else?

i just wanted to clarify something. the school initially sents out a certain number of offers to fill up their class. up until the may deadline, people tend to accept and hold on to their spot at multiple schools .... the result is that no more than 150-175 offers are sent out at this point because that is all it takes to fill the class.

for the class of 2009, ~350 acceptances were sent out altogether. class size is ~150.

I interviewed 5 weeks ago and just heard about the high priority list on Saturday.

so upstate takes up to 200 people off of their waitlist? that seems astronomically high for any school's waitlist. i remember mrs. welch telling us that around 750 interviewed and that around 350 were ultimately accepted, and that people towards the upper part of the hpa list were accepted. with that in mind, these numbers just seem a little crazy to me. if this is true, the hpa list must be pretty sizeable (over 200 at least).

i know mrs. welch told us the percentages of people who were immediately accepted vs. hpa list vs. regular waitlist vs. rejected post-interview, but i can't remember off the top of my head now. does anyone remember those? that might help clarify things. in any case, i just can't imagine that 200 people are accepted off the waitlist. i don't think that happens at any school.
 
No, not exactly. I'm not sure what the number of people to come off of the HPA list was but about 350 people were accepted. The reason that we only had an entering class of 153 was that a number of people chose to go elsewhere or to do something else. Basically, my understanding is that we accept a number of people outright (around 350) and then fill any openings in the class (i.e. to about 153 people) off of the HPA list based on campus demand (i.e. openings in either Syracuse or Binghamton).

So does this mean that if you are coming off of the HPA List you lose your shot at applying for the summer anatomy program? 🙁

ah, ok. that is what i was thinking they must do, rather than only accepting 150 upfront and then taking the other 200 or so after may (in other words, from the wait list). this makes a lot more sense now.

No, not necessarily, they lied to ONE of you. Who knows who? He was jsut told that there are still spots in the class though and that was yesterday.... maybe there ARE now that some people have had other acceptances and withdrawn.

I don't think you would necessarily lose the opportunity to do summer anatomy. Some people are accepted off of the HPA list after summer anatomy and theoretically, the course could reach max students, though that hasn't happened. If you were to be accepted before the summer anatomy deadlines, I shouldn't think there'd be any reason why you couldn't take the course.
 
When I interviewed at Upstate in January, at the end of my interview my interviewer told me not to worry if I ended up getting on HPL, since it will "most likely" result in acceptance. He said that in the past several years the majority of people on HPL were. Hope this helps, although I was accepted right off 🙂
 
Sorry for the cut sentence, he said that in the past several years the majority of people on HPL were accepted off of it, since lots of acceptees ended up declining their acceptances. So, don't worry too much about HPL 🙂

I will try to cover all of the questions raised on this post -

We are still offering acceptances and will for another few weeks. We do overbook a bit and then let our class unfill and start pulling people off the HPA list. (we do not pull 300 students off the HPA list!) We do not normally start pulling people off the HPA list until sometime after May 15th. The HPA list is no guarantee, but we do actively pull students off the list - the Hold by Committee list has not moved in the last 4 years and I am not hopeful that we will get to it this year. We can tell you, after May 15th roughly, if things are looking good off the HPA list, not so good or if you are in an area that we can't predict, but not until the HPA list starts moving. We will offer acceptances right up until August 23rd.

Has anyone heard anything from upstate on the movement of HPA List?
 
Not a word...There are 3 or 4 kids at my school on the HPA list and no one has heard. Anybody called lately?
 
I know this may be confidential. Does anyone has any idea on the size of the HPA list? I also saw on the threads from previous years that usually HPA list was exhausted every year. Is this true?
 
i called last week. Ms. Welch told me to contact her after the 15th because she has no way of knowing what movement will be like at this point.
