any thoughts on this program? low, middle, high tier? how are the surgical numbers?

Lower-middle, certainly not high but not bottom of the barrel.

As far as numbers, three cases with a really good teacher is better than 10 with an ordinary teacher. The only trouble is that applicants never can find out who has the good teachers and good teachers can leave by the time the med school applicant is a 3rd year resident. Of course, few cases with bad teachers is the worst! Many cases with good teachers is the best. Since it's difficult to find out the quality of teachers, just look at overall numbers.

thanks for the response! So based on this I'm assuming that they don't have good teachers?

I'd actually say solid middle tier with above average surgical numbers. Last group of graduates, when there were only 3 per year, finished with over 200 cases a piece. Now with 4 per year in every class, that probably drops under 200. There are definitely good teachers there, especially for cataract training. This program, like most, has strengths and weaknesses. It's on the small side, with only 9 full-time faculty, but many other part-time and gratis. Lots of pathology. Retina-heavy. Probably weakest presently in neuro, because their neuro-ophthalmologist is Karl Golnik, who is "on loan" from Cincinnati, where he is the program director. He's only in Louisville once per month. Cornea has had a boost with the hire of Ali Haider. Did his cornea training at Rochester and has introduced more advanced techniques, including corneal prostheses. Graduates have had good fellowship matches in recent years.

Any recent information on this program?
Going to be interviewing at Louisville this match cycle and wanted to know if there have been any recent changes or updates I need to be aware of...

there has got be some issue that people have had on interview day just based on current residents. Or maybe they are particular about who they rank...

3rd year residents- all from louisville
2nd year residents- 3 international
1st year residents- 2 DO, 1 international, 1 louisville

Yeah... Very interesting...

Everything I have heard about them tells me that they value an away very highly. I think that's why you see those particular residents. DOs, IMGs, are more likely to do many aways.

I've heard it's a good clinical program. I didnt interview there so this is all word of mouth.

Their chairman has a colorful history. Occasionally he "likes" a resident so much that he....
