I got a good impression of Kresge. They're a larger program with 7 residents, and they admit that they are a very busy program too. Call is q6, covering 7 hospitals, and is in-house (very rare for ophtho) for the first 3 months. You do "buddy call" for the first 2 months. They seemed to have very good support for their residents, and the PD and Chairman were nice people, very down to earth and easy to talk to. They give you the Detroit OKAP course, a business of medicine course, an intro to ophthalmic surgery course, and they have a "first year reading program" to help keep the first years on track, which I thought was cool. They said a typical day was about 8 to 5:30 or 6, and they said they are very busy. They admitted that the weakest specialty was cornea. They send their people to good fellowships. They had a nice resident lounge with couches and TVs and computers, lots of residents would sleep there while taking in-house call. They supposedly get alot of surgery starting the 2nd year. The furthest hospital is Sinai Grace which is about 10 miles away. They get books and lenses and such paid for, I believe. Detroit is Detroit, which you can view as a good or a bad. It gets a bad rap but they said that there are nicer areas to live in. Overall seemed to be a solid program.
