The residents here were great. The hospital is a nice facility with a lot of prestige in the greater academic world. The clinics were nice, and the VA was fantastic and among the busiest in the country. Surgical numbers were a little below average, and call is light (Q9 I seem to remember). The new-ish chair, Dr. Rhee, is a big plus for the program. Very sharp, good sense of humor, but can be a bit intense. I didn't really enjoy my interview with him, but did have good interactions with him throughout the day. He is well-known, and arrived only 3 years ago(?) from MEEI. The program seemed particularly strong in peds (Rainbow is a top children's hospital) and glaucoma. Cleveland is not as bad as I’d anticipated, and the area around Euclid is charming and affordable. I think this program is rapidly rising under new direction. They were open with their probation 6 years ago-due to disparity in cat numbers, low plastics, and admin issues. It was all fixed or is being fixed, and I don’t think applicants should worry much about this when ranking. They have a strong match list too, including glaucoma and cornea at Wills since the arrival of Rhee (trained at Wills). Chair did admit that retina was weakest area, but that they are recruiting new faculty. Overall a solid program, and improving by the year.
