I just want to know if you think i am ok and can get into one of these schools or need to take the pcat test again.
I also have an A frist Organic chm semister and B+ second
A+ in calc 1 and A in calc 2
I have one C in Cell bio and a C+ in biochm--- my brother died in afganistan fighting a war which i am opposed to when i got these so i was not in my right mind.
My personal statement is really strong and everyone seems to like it so far.

This might sound basic, but for the reading section read the questions first and then the passage. Most questions start with "On Paragraph 2 the author's........." so it's good to make marks next to the paragraphs where you will need to concentrate the most. This will save you brain power and TIME because you can just skim over the non essential parts. Plus by reading the questions first you know what to look, better utilizing that son of a B...TIME. I ended up with 5-10 minutes of free time to relax before the next section and scored a 90 something for reading.
thanks for the great tip, i will definitely keep this in mind!!!

hello all!!
overall: GPA 3.5
math and science: 3.3
no volunteer work
experience as an inpatient unit coordinator but not directly with pharmacy department

PCAT: not yet, planing on taking it in October

I'm taking the Kaplan course on-line and scoring in the 400's across the board - I'm only half way through but is this a reflection of how badly I'll do on the actually test?
And if so, what are my chances of getting in to a pharmacy school?

applying to: Creighton, UNM and MUSC

Does anyone get in with just an A.A. Degree? GPA is a 3.9. My PCAT is in the 84th percentile. No work experience. Applying to UF.

I know this isn't the typical wamc post but i thought this would be a good place to ask.

Thanks everyone.

my top two choices are UF and UNC. in your opinion will I have a good chance to get into either of these schools? also, please notice the score i received on the reading section of the PCAT. is there a chance this will hold me back? should i retake?

Hi guys, I got my PCAT results back today and I am extremely disappointed in how I performed. I didn't study at all and I only did one practice test, and I have yet to take a few pre-requisites (microbiology, A&P II).

Let me preface this by saying that I am a recent pre-pharmacy convert (I'd considered it during my first two and a half years in school and decided upon it after last winter break). As such, I still need to complete a few pre-requisites and have other superfluous coursework. I have taken 17-18 credits per semester for my entire stay at school, though, and I will be graduating with a B.S. in Public Health (i.e. I'm not applying after two years of school).

a. Schools you are applying to
University of Minnesota

b. Overall GPA
3.81
c. Math/Science GPA
3.72
My pre-req GPA is 3.82
*Math GPA is around a 3.9, not sure on science. Didn't do these individually when I crunched the numbers. My science isn't so hot because I got a B in general chemistry II... I did rock the O-Chems (A in I and A- in II) and have done well in most other courses.

Composite score: 87%

Conventions of language: 3.0
Problem-solving: 3.0

f. Pharmacy experience obtained
No experience yet. Interviewed with Walgreens last week for a pharmacy technician position. It went well except I will only be here for 9 months and the pharmacist said that it takes about 6 months for someone with no experience to become comfortable in the setting. May apply for a cashier position at a different pharmacy if I do not get this position.

g. Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary)
Have yet to start application. I have the month of August free to complete it, however. I was waiting on my PCAT score to tell whether or not it was worth applying.

Additionally, the following will help us gauge your chances but are more optional:
h. Number of LORs and source of LORs
So far, only one LOR is confirmed. This will come from the head of my department (Public Health) who I have completed research with and other projects.
I am job shadowing an oncology pharmacist and a pharmacist with the Indian Health Service soon, and will probably request a LOR from the IHS pharmacist. I also hope to receive an LOR from the pharmacist at whichever pharmacy I begin to work at.

i. Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience
None, but involved in numerous extra-curricular groups, mostly related to environmental issues. Hold vice president position within one.

j. Self-perception of interview skills
Strong

k. Overall impression of personal statement quality

Great academic achievement but no extracurricular. No offense here but personally I think being in a pre-pharmacy club means about jack unless you're in some sort of leadership position. My stats weren't stellar but I found a volunteer position about 5 months prior to applying and I think it helped dramatically.

My advice would be to take the PCAT in August, though I think it's too late to register for that. The reason for this is because if you don't do as well as you want to, you can still take the October. Most schools won't accept January PCAT. Also, don't memorize interview questions. Most interviewers can tell when they're getting a canned response.

I have been out of college for 4 years due to my military commitment and plan on returning to school in the Spring of 2010. I only have 4 classes to take to be eligible for the accelerated 3 year programs (I have my B.S. in Humanities from Worcester Polytechnic Institute), but I am looking at completing a whole year to be more competitive. Any assistance form those more experienced with this process would be greatly appreciated. I still have a lot to learn about how to sell myself in this profession and get into Pharm D. school! I will also submit this in my own thread and hope for more discussion.

I'm considering applying to Worcester, Pacific Oregon and Oregan state. (<No PCAT)

I don't know if I should apply to the CA schools. Maybe a waste of time? What do you think?

Oh yeah, by the way, I'm a second time applicant (maybe). The first time I applied, I got rejected from all the CA schools, besides Western and UoP (they waitlisted me for interviews). Northstate gave me an interview but I failed.

This makes it harder for you if you actually want to spend the time to think about suggesting schools. Keep in mind, I only have two letters and I haven't taken the PCAT.

The only difference between my current application and the previous app is that GPA has gone up a little. No extra health care experience, etc. I'm guessing If I apply to the CA schools, the same thing will happen as the applicant pool will be just as competitive or more competitive. I want to apply to Northstate, but I can't afford to Sallie Mae. So that leaves me with the out of state schools. AHH. Let me know.

I am graduating from the University of South Florida in August with a Bachelors Degree in Science in the field of Biomedical Sciences with a minor in Public Health.

A. Schools that Im applying to: UF, Nova, LECOM Bradenton, Temple, Univ of Houston, Texas Southern U, Rutgers, University of Sciences in Philly, maybe Auburn

B. Overall GPA ~ 3.4

C. Math/Sci GPA ~ 3.25

D. PCAT scores: just got my scores online from the june pcat:

Verbal: 431/89
Bio: 414/71
RC: 410/62
Quant: 410/59
Chem: 422/77

Comp: 417/76

i feel like this score is at the lower end of the competitive range but it is also comparable with the first time i took the pcat in october 2008, i got a 39 composite score.

E. Pharmacy Experience: I worked as a pharmacy tech for 4 years since 2004 at walgreens, obtained my CPhT in November 2006, renewed it till November 2010, and currently working at Tampa General Hospital in the Inpatient Pharmacy as a Tech-2 for the past year.

F. Date of App Submition: by the end of this month

G. # of LORs: 2, one from a pharmacist that i worked with at walgreens and one from my biochem professor.

H. non pharmacy volunteer: Volunteered with my church youth group for more than 100 hours, do various events such as metropolitan ministries, SHARE, and visiting senior centers.

I. Self-preception of interview skills: i think i can handle an interview, i may show signs of nervousness, but overall i can get the message across and express myself.

J. Personal Statement Quality: I am currently working on that right now, but i have been revising it numerous times into something unique, hopefully it is good enough.

Right now my main concern is my GPA and my PCAT scores, how do you guys think i will do? Thanks for all the help

First things first, get your cumulative gpa up to at least a 2.5 (or 2.7 for some schools)!!! This is because 2.5 is minimum gpa required. However, with that being said, you need to get your gpa to at least 2.9++ to have a shot. If you can get your gpa to 2.9+, PCAT 85%, and with your 2 years pharmacy experience, you might have a chance! Now if you don't have a lot of units on your record, it will be a lot easier for you to pull your gpa up. If you graduated with a 2.3, then it will be A LOT harder for you to pull your gpa up. Depends on where you are in your education, I suggest you RETAKE ALL of your prereqs.

2.5 right now, I know it's pretty low but I haven't taken that many classes yet.

3.0 only had college algebra done. This is really embarrassing but I took it more then 3 times. I wasn't thinking straight at the time I started college so I was just going to school just to go to school. But trust me, it's not bc I have to take it 3 times to pass! 😡

j. Self-perception of interview skills
I would say I am okay on this.
k. Overall impression of personal statement quality
This is what I am concern about. I didn't do very well my first/second year. This is going to be my fourth year and I am only starting my pre-req for pharmacy. I'm done with the core classes though. I had to take some classes about 2-3 times bc I wasn't in the right frame of mind to be in school at the time I started college. If I knew I wanted to do pharmacy at the time, my gpa would not look anywhere like this! I think this is what worries me most!!😡😡😡but I might as well try.

👎 FYI, I haven't gotten many classes down yet so with some calculations I figured I could bring my overall gpa to a 3.3 at the highest and my science/math gpa could be as high as a 4.0 when I am done with all classes. so any chances at all!???:meanie:

You will only have 1 semester to get your grades up before being reviewed if you are applying for fall 2010 and you must take the pcat by october09 for almost all schools. I would say your resume is far from complete with no pcat/no lors/no personal statement yet/bad grades. I would wait 1 year if I were you and try to get a job as a pharm tech, get straight As, and wait until august10 to take the pcat. I would put your chances of getting in this year at very slim.

Thanks Brunsizzle! just fyi, I am also applying to a handful of other schools but the university of minnesota is my top choice. here is a list of the rest of the schools I am applying to. think I've got a shot at getting accepted to at least one of them?

University of Colorado
Drake university
university of iowa
midwestern university - chicago
wayne state
university of michigan
ohio state
university of washington
university of wyoming
appalachian college of pharmacy

smash22- I would def say you have a good chance of getting in somewhere if you apply to all of those schools and attend all interviews that are granted. If you have a 25% chance at each school, then mathematically you are nearly a lock. 1-(.75^11) = about a 96% chance that you will get into at least 1 school. =)
But that 25-50% was a guess so its only my opinion.

I agree. I do not think your chances at UIC are great, given no pharmacy or volunteer experience. Do you feel prepared to answer: why pharmacy? It's hard to answer if you have no real knowledge or exposure to the profession, IMO.

If nursing school did not "kill you", then yes, i'd say you have a great chance of getting in to a pharmacy school somewhere. However, getting killed in nursing school will definately not look good when you apply to pharmacy school. I'd say you will have a hard time trying to get in because of a downward trend in your GPA. This is just my opinion.... Just try to keep your GPA above 3.0, don't let it slip down to 2.9 or less!!! By the way, how is your science GPA still a 3.5 when you are getting Cs in nursing courses?

I dont think they going to count the core nursing classes as science (medical surgical nursing , maternal child, psychiatry ect..). I hope they dont count them as science classes... I dont have a downward trend. In fact, I have an upward trend because I took most of the prepharm classes (General chem1&2, Orgo1&2, Bio1&2) after I graduated from nursing school

Hi all,

I am a senior at UCLA. I completed most of the prerequisites at the CC. I plan to apply to UCSF, UCSD, USC, UOP, and Western. Here are my stats:

a. GPA: 4.0 🙂
b. PCAT: should I take it to apply to more out of state schools?
c. Pharmacy experience: less than 50 hours of volunteer in a hospital (pharmacy department). 🙁
d. Non-pharmacy work experience: 3 years working at the optometry office, summer undergraduate researcher at UCI, lab assistant at CC.
e. Some awards and scholarships in chemistry.
f. Strong LORs from: Organic Chem professor (CC), Physical Chem Professor (UCLA), employer (optometrist), and pharmacist (maybe).

I am really worried about my EC's and pharmacy experience. Will that heavily affect my application? What are the chances of getting an interview for me at UCSF and UCSD? Thank you.

I think you have an excellent shot at UCSF and UCSD and you will probably get into most (if not all) of the schools that you are applying to. I wouldn't worry too much about EC's since you have a good amount of other work experiences. Also, the fact that you have some pharmacy experience will give you a big boost. 🙂

Thanks. I thought my post was long forgotten. Why did you choose UCSD over UCSF, if you don't mind telling me?

I see, that wasn't clear in your first post. If that's the case, yes I feel you have a great chance of getting into pharmacy school. Just be prepare for questions like why do you want to go from nursing to pharmacy!

Schools you are applying to:
UCSF, Western, UOP, UCSD, USC, Touro, California Northstate (should I even apply considering it doesnt have full accreditation yet?), Loma Linda (I'm not Christian...how am I supposed to get a letter from a spiritual advisor?...Should I even apply?)

I actually need suggestions on finding good out-of-state schools that I would have a good shot getting into considering my stats.

Overall GPA:
3.3 (at UCI)

Math/Science GPA:
between 3.0-3.2

GPA in last one or two school years:
~3.3

Complete PCAT scores (or just composite):
Planning to take it in August and in October if necessary (how long does it take to get your scores?)

Pharmacy experience obtained:
Worked in a Leader Pharmacy for 7 months with over 250 hours of experience.

Date of application submission (PharmCAS/primary and secondary)
Plan to submit within 2 weeks

Additionally, the following will help us gauge your chances but are more optional:

Number of LORs and source of LORs:
1-Pharmacist
2- Microbiology Professor. PhD
3- P.I. for Research PhD

Non-pharmacy work and/or volunteer experience:
3 months at Hoag and will continue
3 years on school a capella team.....not pharmacy related at all ofcourse
1 year of research in pharmacology department at UCI Med School

Self-perception of interview skills:
I think with practice I can do fine. I am a good conversationalist.

Taking all of this into consideration, what do you honestly think are my chances?

Thank you.

Will an arrest on my record affect my chances of getting into Pharmacy School, even if there was no conviction??

Background:
I'm 20 and my brother is 19. So me and my brother had an altercation, and I used a flashlight in self defense and ended up cutting his head. I felt really bad as I was only trying to defend myself after he had attacked me. Well he was already angry and decided to call the police and press charges. I was arrested and bailed out by my family. My brother feels very guilty and admits he was in the wrong.

I have very good grades and am known as the good kid in the family. My brother is addicted to crystal meth and was coming off the drug at the time of the incident. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

edit- Note: This was a felony arrest for assault with a deadly weapon...

Sweet baby Jesus. Now, understand while we know the back-story and details behind the incident, anyone doing a background check just sees, "Felony assault with a deadly weapon." That's about as fire engine red as the flag gets I'm afraid. Although, if you were never convicted I'm not sure how that plays out on a background check. Since when did flashlights fall under the category of 'deadly?'

I would call a lawyer and see how to get that removed from your record.

I mean is it even possible to get into any of the schools is listed without any volunteer/extracurricular experience? :scared: I posted my stats previously. I do have excellent grades and only lack a few classes as far as pre-reqs. are concerned. I am very worried about this....

would it be even possible to get an interview for a chance to explain all of that?

Ehh, I think a drug conviction would hurt more than assault with a deadly weapon.

Since it wasn't a conviction, I think it'll be "OK". I definitely agree with Jet - See if you can get that removed from your record so you don't even have to disclose it. But anyone who has seen or known someone coming down off meth will know how dangerous they can be, so that might play into your favor.

And yeah, what the hell, why as a flashlight a deadly weapon? Was it a maglite or something? Or maybe where you hit him? I'm no lawyer but that sounds weird as hell.

If you didn't get convicted and your brother formally dropped the complaint then it should be fine. Like the others said, just make sure it is off your record just to be safe. Usually, an arrest doesn't mean anything without a conviction (unless there were several suspicious arrests). Like if you look at the yes/no questions on anything it usually says "Have you been convicted of a felony within the past 5 years" or something like that. Since I actually didn't go through the formal pharmcas app process I can't tell you with 100% certainty that this will be the case during your application.

Will you get a chance to explain your arrest? Definitely you should be able to. If any school turns you away from an interview because of your arrest I would appeal it until their ears bleed.

Is this a big cause for concern? No, don't worry too much about it, but I recommend taking the advice of the other people who responded to you just as an extra precaution. I'm assuming since you asked if you would get a chance to explain that you already have a good story to back it up.

What concerns me is your inappropriate use of effect instead of affect. Nae not really, lots of us get it confused at times. Just wanted to lighten the mood a bit

Probably no category for "small household utility" so they lumped the flashlight in with "blunt force object".

Well, I asked the lawyer-to-be and she suggested I read up on it on USLegal, so I did, and here's what I came up with:

"A deadly weapon is generally defined as a firearm or anything manifestly designed, made, or adapted for the purposes of inflicting death or serious physical injury."

The way I see it, and the way the LEGAL definition reads, the flashlight would've needed a knife or firearm attached to it in order for it to be a deadly weapon. That is specific verbiage in law... "Deadly weapon" is a penalty enhancer, not to be taken or applied lightly!

Incidentally, and interestingly, an unloaded or locked firearm can still count as a "deadly weapon" for assault charges, even if it's not in its "deadly" form. Also, 36 states discriminate between "deadly" and "Destructive" for assault charges, destructive applying to things like poison and bombs.

But nowhere in this huge document was "flashlight" or anything even remotely similar. The in-house aspiring attorney suggests the charge should've been aggravated assault and that OP is either lying/exaggerating the charge/omitting information or, for some other reason, was incorrectly charged.

This makes me want to jump into law. Too bad I hate filing paperwork.

And having to go to a T14 school to have any shot at a job paying more than 50 grand a year.

She stresses out about an A- on her transcript. Let alone getting a 3.0 and sweating it...

ouch 🙁 that blows...yeah I'm too lazy for that kind of stress

Same here! LOL.

Almost all applicants have 3.85+ cumulative GPA and 165+ on LSAT (Which would be roughly equivalent to a 95 composite on the PCAT).

If you go below either of those metrics more or less, welcome to McGeorge School of Law, hope you like ambulance chasing.
