I think disinence's point is well-taken. For Neurosurg, dermatology, and a few other fields, chairman's letters are required even for away rotations. If there's not a process in place for that, the process will be much more stressful for a given specialty. Furthermore, if there isn't a tradition of mentoring in a given department, things again become more challenging. Finally, the student aspect is there too, if no one is matching into say, Neurosurg, there won't be a friendly m4 there to give advice to the m3s about to try to optimize their apps in a given field. Of course, PDs will also be less familiar with students from an institution if no one goes into it. My school didn't have anyone do optho this past year, which is a big issue for the ppl in my class who want to do it especially with it being early match.

Again, these are inferences based on the tenuous assumption that the most important variable in the equation is the medical school of origin, not the relative merits of the applicant themselves.

I know I'm arguing an unpopular point, my point is that match lists are of minimal use to pre-meds or even pre-clinical students. Until a student is actually involved in the application process, they won't really know the relative strengths of programs. I've said it before, not every brand name is great at everything.

Agreed. You definitely lose the benefit of program directors being familiar with students from your school. If a program has taken students from a particular school in the recent past that have done very well, there is a higher likelihood of wanting to take more. To continue the neurosurgery example, it seems pretty clear that there is some sort of Columbia-Barrow connection or how at my school (usually 2-4 neurosurg applicants) there always seems to be someone that matches at WashU. This is also true because often residents play a role in the selection of applicants, and may be favored to choose you if they know you/worked with you as a med student.

see post #90 for stony brook. i'm a 4th year... shoot me questions if you have any

A MS-4 friend of mine said the way to look at match lists is to look at the IM matches since every school have a bunch of them, and look at where they matched. You can't make much of a decision from the # of people in dermatology since it's too variable and the sample size is too small, but if you can get a list of the past 2-3 years of match lists and just look at the various programs that IM students matched at, it would give you a good indication of the quality of the match list.

I don't know how accurate/inaccurate this advice is.

In before Law2Doc writes another essay about why this is crap

Also, someone on SDN did something like this a few years ago: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=389117

I didn't say I knew enough to make an informed decision. I was just repeating what I was told and why. Would like to know his opinion on why it doesn't matter.

I think that's pretty legit, but the problem is that it's going to be difficult to tell for a premed (or actually anyone who isn't in internal med or one of its subspecialties or applying to them) what a "good" IM program is. I have a vague idea which programs are top-flight, but certainly wouldn't be able to compare, for example, Sinai vs Cornell or BWH vs Penn.

The other question is what difference it makes, and IMO, you should be able to get where you want from any good academic program. Our schools gen surg program is pretty good, but certainly not top tier, yet two of our chiefs are starting fellowships at arguably the top places in their respective fields in ultra competitive fellowships (peds surg at bch, etc)

True, I just look at the US news rankings. Maybe not the best, maybe not accurate, but it jives with the general feel I get reading the IM forums. Obviously I have no idea whether Michigan State or Wayne State has a better IM program, but I don't think any pre-med will be looking at it that closely. And I don't think anyone will try to compare Penn vs. Duke and try to rank.

That website (I have the subscription) ranks about the top 30 and even though I'm sure there are substantial disagreements, I bet at least 15 of those would make most people's top thirty. So if I were to take this into consideration, I'd just make an estimate on roughly the # of people matching into the top twenty or so and see if there is a significant difference. E.g, if I am looking at a school that, over the past three years, matched 5/85 IM into the top twenty vs. a school that matched 60/85 into the top twenty, maybe that'd be a significant indication.

Just playing devil's advocate here. I'm not going to use this to pick my med school. I have one criteria: it begins with a 'c' and rhymes with 'jost'.

While this is true for most specialties, IM is generally the one specialty that correlates pretty well with school/overall institutional prestige. The top are generally considered UCSF, MGH, BWH, Penn, Duke, and Hopkins, followed by schools like Umich, WashU, Stanford, Columbia, etc.

I know what the best programs are, my point is unless you are in the field or done a lot of research, how do you compare say, bwh and Penn? How would you know NYC schools are considered less desirable bc of nursing issues? Etc.

But I think the question really is whether you can or should infer that the lack of NS matches at a particular school implies that the infrastructure you're talking about (mentoring, etc) isn't in place, instead of any of the other highly likely and completely plausible reasons that most medical students don't go into NS/Rad Onc/whatever. Similarly, what's the predictive value of the lack of any optho match in your school's class for incoming 2015ers? I don't doubt that it's inconvenient for your MS3s for all the reasons you stated, but just wondering how helpful that lone piece of information is for people considering whether or not to attend your school.

Anyway, I think this discussion is somewhat moot, because despite whatever logic is thrown down, people will continue to pick schools based on match lists, number of students/body in anatomy lab, and how late the school's gym is open.

Hey, don't knock my priorities.

Yeah exactly, interestingly enough at drizzt's school last year's match had 4 students matched into Ophtho. And that's the kicker, even if you have previous year's match lists, people will never fully understand a student's decision about his/her match list, nor the student's body of work (USMLE/grades/evals/EC's etc). Its a bad assumption made by some here, especially the thought that people maximize "prestige" over all other choices when it comes to the match. Unless you know the match applicant, how can anyone here identify the AOA applicant with a Step 1 of 250 who matched in IM at Minnesota because their family lives in the area? According to DoctwoB, that's a "bad" match, but in the end, how will anyone glancing at match lists know the full story? It is myths like that I just have to shake my head at.

In the end, the central assertion is that going to a competitive school will make up for any deficiencies in your application, and boost a below to average applicant into a superstar; likewise going to a "state" or non-competitive school will automatically be a negative for even the most competitive residency applicant. The reality of this assertion is that it is simply false. If you are a competitive applicant, it won't matter where you're from. Having a degree from a "prestigious" school will not morph a Step1 of 215 and average grades into a Step1 of 250 and AOA. Those schools don't have that kind of power, sorry to burst some people's bubbles.

A sad truth that some physicians in training don't learn, it is most important to attend a medical school/residency location that makes them happy. Whether it is family, friends, significant other, prestige, research opportunities, brand name... whatever makes a person happy, they should go there. Unfortunately many don't learn this lesson until applying for residency. Hence, IMO, more people stress happiness when applying for residency, but it is seemingly is downplayed when matriculating for medical school. Please, please people who read this, happiness is number one when making a decision about medical school, not some match list that is virtually impossible interpret despite the myths perpetuated by some in this thread. Don't let the performance and rank list choices made my some student you have never met, whose story you don't know, alter your decision about medical school. Go where you are happy, for whatever the reason(s) is/are.

I mean, for our school, it's a non-issue because we have very strong optho and NS programs and this year a number of people are coming through the pipeline. It's a bigger deal when a school never sends people into NS or rad onc, and has a weak or non-existent department in that specialty.

I legitimately tried to search... but I couldn't find it.

Where is UCI's and UCLA's match list (recent and old if possible).

I tried combing through the "2011 match list" thread, but neither showed up.

You have to email them. I don't think they post it.

EDIT: Jk I guess.

I'm really surprised by how many med students have matched into Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery programs. Some of these match lists (Mayo, Penn, Drexel, etc.) are giving me the impression that there is a growing interest in the field among med students, and that adcoms of those programs are becoming increasingly more receptive to applicants with MDs. Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure those are dental students. I could be wrong.

still looking for UCLA's. Any help?

Did you get any email addresses from your guides during your interview day or second look? They keep the match list archive behind a firewall that the merely accepted don't have access to yet. I would recommend emailing a current student or the admissions office and see if they will provide you one.

MD students can go into oral and maxillofacial surgery programs as well. There are paths for going both ways.

Which programs allow a straight MD to Oral Maxillofacial, without DDS/DMD?

That's interesting, so I did a little digging. I found some old post that say Alabama and Penn offer such programs, but you have to get the DDS/DMD degree and then go into OMFS residency. I couldn't find mention of others and I'm not sure if these schools in particular still offer these routes.

....I sometimes forget that there are other avenues of obtaining information beyond SDN. Thanks.

Could you post links to these programs? I searched and the only route is by getting your DMD/DDS first, and then getting your MD through the OMFS residency...

It seems like most schools had good matches this year and I congratulate everyone. Mercer was no exception - for a small, private school from the South that most people have never heard of, I think we did quite well.

Our focus on primary care is evident, and we matched at some powerhouse institutions. We also did great in the sub-specialties with ENT, rad-onc, rads, and ortho all being well-represented. Ortho in particular was impressive - 7 out of 8 who wanted ortho matched. Out of a class of 63, I'd say that's a good day.

To all of you med-students students/pre-meds wanting to see match lists. There are MANY things wrong with your thinking/reasoning for wanting to see these match lists and I think you really need to gain a reality check.

Firstly -- the students that get admitted to those schools (top tier med schools (of which, I am a grad)) are usually extremely Type A, very, very hard working, and care more about prestige and rankings than many other things. Naturally, match lists from those schools (whose students are more likely to pursue those placements and do what it takes to get there) are going to reflect that. HOWEVER, there are MANY students from MANY other average to above average medical schools (as defined by the rankings (which are bogus) by US News) who match and fill those EXACT SAME RESIDENCY PROGRAMS.

The Message to you: IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE YOU GO TO SCHOOL, BUT HOW WELL YOU DO. It's not the school that provides the strength of the match (although it does help a little, in my opinion) it's the student. Top tier schools are filled with more over-achieving students. Don't get confounded. You can do just as well going to an "average" school and being an excellent student, just like the students at Harvard are.

Another thing, I chose to go into family medicine, a very "non-prestigious" field at a place that was close to my family and would be a change for me. By the time it comes to apply for residency, your outlook, needs, and desires will be different. A LOT of my classmates interviewed at places that were regarded as "number 1 in this or leaders in that" and chose NOT to rank them highly on their lists. The places that were ranked number 1-5 in family med (ps- residency rankings are just as bogus as school rankings - all about $$, not strength of clinical training) were lowest on my list because I found their residents to be boring and full-of-themselves and their programs to be kinda weird. I chose a nice, solid, middle of the road program with strong foundations in what I want to learn.

I'd encourage you to look inward and stop worrying about rankings/match lists. If you wanna be a dermatologist, then be one. If you wanna be a family doc, do it! Don't judge anyone for their decisions or because they had the opportunity to do something that you didn't. Just work hard for your goals, be nice to everyone you meet, and live your life. Medicine is medicine.

Does anyone have University of Rochester's match list? Also, a request, please spell out the entire name of your medical school - this makes searching much less of a pain.

If anyone wants to make links for each school, that would also be great.

Does anyone know where I can find the University of Utah match list? I looked all over and can't find it. Thanks.
