NYMC Class of 2008 Class List

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am still waiting on hearing from one school, but as of now, I'm going to NYMC. 🙂

I am going. 😀

I know there are more of us out there. Speak up!

I'm on a handfull of waitlists, but it looks like I'm headed that way.

Well, I have never heard anything from NYMC since I pressed submit last August. Do you think they're not interested in me ??? 🙂

Anyone living off campus? Where?

Hey Guys,
Its looking like I'm headed that way. There is only one waitlist that I'm really interested in.

When do you guys think we should start looking for housing? My parents are pushing me to get started but I don't want to sign a lease and then get a call from another school. I was thinking about getting the ball rolling around July.

Oh, by the way there is an article in the NY Times today about Westchester Medical Center opening a new pediatrics building...hopefully this will give us more clinical opportunities as medical students.

Looks like I'll be attending NYMC in the fall as well.

Most of the students choose to live on campus, so unless you definitely need to live off campus you don't need to worry about finding a place.

Yeah, but if you are going to live off campus, then should you start looking like now. I was planning on getting the ball rolling in the beginning of July.

A word of warning: Non-campus housing around the school is not cheap. Keep that in mind when making your on/off campus decision

Problem with campus housing is that you must be married to live with someone else. And they do not allow pets.

I will be a member if NYMC class of 2008. Planning to live off campus. I live about 30 minutes from valhalla, so I'll be commuting. Congratulations to everyone here.

I just wanted to ask if anyone knew a particular cell carrier that has good service up in Westchester? I currently have AT&T, but i was thinking of switching and I just wanted to know if anyone had input regarding cell service blah blah blah. Thanks a bunch!

I used my AT&T cell when I interviewed, and I had good reception the whole time. Even on my crappo-special phone.

Just got in, today. Will be attending. Look forward to meeting all of you guys in person.

Hey everyone, I got in today too, and I'll see you all soon! 😀

Where in Valhalla is there off campus housing? Is there of campus housing near campus?

Thanks.

Thanks Mccarey!! Today is the last day of my finals so I finally get to go out and celebrate this acceptance the right way!! 😉

Back to my annoying cell phone question. I know the cingular service map says I'll have service, but I was just wondering if anyone has cingular and can tell me how their Valhalla service is. I'm trying to work out a cell phone plan for my family, and any input if I'd be wasting my money with cingular b/c I'd have no service would be REALLY helpful!!

Another question: When I visited NYMC, some of the oncampus students had double size beds in their room. I think, I could have hallucinated that and be thinking of another school. Anyone have a clue? I know it made a tight fit, but I'm fed up with twin beds and want to bring my double with me. If you've seen it done at NYMC as well, could you please confirm for me before I screw up and bring a bed that won't fit! Thanks so much you guys! Getting excited for school! Move in is in almost just one month!!!!!!!!!
😀

The cellphone thing is a good point. I don't know if I should stay with Nextel or go with Verizon. Does anybody know anything about the Nextel service in Valhalla?
Izzyfine-

In my experience Verizon has the best coverage in Westchester. Don't know much about Cingular, but definitely don't get AT&T, it really blows (especially in the dorms themselves).

As for bringing a bed, yes you can do that. Usually people move their bed out into the living room and convert it into a couch, but I don't know how this would work if, say, all of your roommates decided to do the same thing. You may need to contact facilities to remove the bed, but I'm not sure if that's something they do or not...

Thanks so much guys for answering my questions! I appreciate it! I think cingular and AT&T are together now, but if AT&T sucks, then cingular probably does as well. I'll have to give this some thought. Thanks again!!

I'm looking at the housing application and I'm trying to figure out whether I should sign up for the furnished or unfurnished room. Does anyone know what is in the furnished room??

The furnished rooms come with typical dorm furniture. X-long twin bed, dresser, desk, in the common room you have a couch and chair and dining table/chairs. I believe the unfurnished apartments are generally reserved for students who are older and may wish to be apart from the rowdy younguns, and also for students with families.

I'm headed to Valhalla this coming August, too. Anyone from Washington State? What have you heard is recommended to bring to the furnished rooms? Does anyone know?

Congratulations all of you. Prepare to work your butts off, but the learning will be great.

When I had attended, the best service at that time was verizon. I had sprint PCS and was not able to use the phone in my room. Mind you.... I graduated from there in 2001 so things might have changed since then.

Grasslands I are the unfurnished apartments, usually where most of the married people lived. What made them nice were the big bedrooms. You share a kitchen, small dining area, and bathroom with a roomate. Unless you're married- then some families would just rent the whole apartment with both bedrooms. There are other layouts like studio apartments, one bedroom apts for couples (HUGE living room). And all bedrooms have an ethernet connection.

Grasslands II are the more newly built apartments, but in my opinion they were poorly designed. Anytime you do any sort of quality cooking, the smoke alarms would go off... almost everybody I knew eventually removed the battery from the thing. They are furnished as described above. 2 roomates share one bathroom in the apartment. Each bedroom has an ethernet and phone connection. In the first yr of med school, many people opt to live in grasslands 2. Just has that dormlike feel to it. And if you're new to the area and know NO one in the school-- living in Grasslands II can help develop some good camaraderie.

Good luck with everything

Hey tiggity. I'm from Portland. Good to know others are headed to NYMC from the Left Coast. 😀

Alright, so on the student housing application, under Grasslands II they have 3 person and 4 person apartments. Can anyone tell me which one is better? Which one has the bigger rooms?

whats up everyone? still waiting for 3 more schools but looks like i'll be heading to valhalla. looking forward to meeting everyone...

3 person apartments have one HUGE bedroom with its own bathroom, but it's luck of the draw whether you get it or not. I put myself down for a three and they ended up giving me a four.

Oh, to the earlier question of what furniture to bring, I really like the Grasslands II apartments, but the lighting sucks a righteous donkey tonker. BRING LAMPS -- nice big floor lamps that are fire safe. Bring a few: at least one for your bedroom, if not two, and then you and your roommates will want one or two for your living room as well. An extra couch for your living room wouldn't suck either, if you can muster one, but it might be better to bring it AFTER you move in. Also, don't buy the air conditioners they're offering (I would say). They are expensive and there are a *huge* number of used ACs for sale by other students.

cheers all,
see you in the fall

dude, like half your class is gonna be from "the left coast."
i.e., California.

For those of you from colder climes, one of my favourite pass times in the fall (look: I'm a med student w/no life, waddya want?) was watching the Californians react to the "freezing" 40 degree fall weather. And then the winter hits...

theres a reason its known as UC Valhalla....

Zweihander, approximately how many square feet is the average room in Grasslands II?? I also have a few other questions, if you dont mind answering them:

1) Do the lecture halls have wireless network capabilities? Are they using the new g system or a/b?

2) Can you bring your own refrigerator for your room? How big?

3). Do they re-assign you to a new room every year? I mean, i wouldnt see the sense in moving to a different room in the same building, considering theres only about 3 options to choose from.

4). Is there a White Coat Ceremony? When is it?

Thanks a lot for your help. We all appreciate it

Buggered if I know. It's the biggest single room I've ever lived in (home included), but that ain't saying much.

1) Do the lecture halls have wireless network capabilities? Are they using the new g system or a/b?
The school is looking into going wireless everywhere, but right now no. The library, the cafeteria, and some of the study modules (mainly 2nd floor) have wireless.

2) Can you bring your own refrigerator for your room? How big?
I've got a normal minifridge in my living room (for beer! 😀), so I assume you can have one in your room. Not sure why you'd want to, though.

3). Do they re-assign you to a new room every year? I mean, i wouldnt see the sense in moving to a different room in the same building, considering theres only about 3 options to choose from.
"Sense?" Er, what's that? Actually I am staying in the same place, and a lot of people try to. There's a lottery, and they try to keep spaces open for incoming first years, so if your pick is too low and enough of your classmates want to stay, there might be problems. However, to my knowledge not many people were forced to move, and at least one person who was got to stay in his apartment but had to switch rooms. Yes, I know it's dumb, but there you have it.

4). Is there a White Coat Ceremony? When is it?
October sometime.

cheers

Do the professors use online lecture notes? Powerpoint?? Word?? CDs??

I just got a packet from the Bursar office with info on medical and dental insurance, as well as the tuition bill for the fall semester. But, the bill didn't reflect anything from the fafsa. Has this happened with anyone else? I'm curious if they've received it (the fafsa info) or not, or whether info on that stuff will come later.

When I was there for my interview Cingular worked well for me. I remember having at least 3 bars the whole time.
Yes, I am guilty of being a Californian.... anyone else here from CA?

i recieved the bursar packet with the health info as well and the tuition bill too ( 🙄 --- gone the days of the thrify undergrad, now its being an utterly broke med student!!!)

But in terms of loan disbursement info (i.e. perkins, stafford) or other aid (scholarship), absolutely nothing....can any of the 2nd yrs shed some light into when we might get that (zwei, others??)

reppin' from the land of the sun and the "left coast" ... 😎

im flying out late july, how about all you other left coasters??

i sat in one of the biochem lectures i think during my interview and the prof. from what i remember was using powerpoint but everyone had notes already (prolly from the notetaking service or the profs own syllabus-- dont know if they are available online though)

on a totally unrelated topic:
What do you guys think of the honors/high pass/pass/fail grading system? Good system, bad system, thoughts, opinions?

I got the same thing as you guys in the mail. No info on the bill about loans etc. Personally, I assumed that this is b/c not all of my financial aid/loan stuff is in. I just recently sent in my credit reports and tax return copy and junk. Sooo, I figured I was still waiting for that. I think that once the loans are in the bill gets paid directly from the lender or something. Yes, I looked at the bill and was hoping it was for a full year rather than a semester, even though housing wasn't even on there! Oy. Debt, here I come!

Dealing with financial aid stuff happens during registration. Y'all should at some point be given a financial aid package and asked to "accept" it online, and you should also be filling out promissory notes and all that crap.
Another thing you might try is to go online to the website and check under the students' section/financial aid. I'm not sure if you're just supposed to go in and do stuff or if they have to activate a page for you; I remember getting some notification telling me to do x y and z.

If you have concerns, you can contact the financial aid office and just ask them if they have everything they need from you; I have found them to be very helpful.

Hey everyone!! I am a CA based NYMC 08er as well. I haven't logged in for a while, but decided to check in and, BOOM the top thread is NYMC. Go figure.

I just got the packet today as well, I'm glad it's not just me. I was starting to get a little freaked out.

Does anyone know when we get to move into the dorms? I was thinking about going to Boston on 7/31 for Dispatch's last concert and wanted to figure out if I could drop off all the stuff from the cross country trip first. Hummmmm. I guess I will just have to wait till they give us a schedule or another packet.

Also anyone know about rooms, like when we get our assignment and roomates?

Apparently we get our assignments in mid July, and the first day that we can move in is July 31st.
