Haven't heard much about this lately but I guess it's official. The dean of our school sent out a letter she recieved from the "Joint Commision on National Dental Examinations". Long letter but it basically comes down to:

"At it's meeting in March of 2005, the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations decided to replace the traditional Part I examination with a restructured one that assesses the knowledge and problem solving skills of candidates in a more clinically relevant and interdisciplinary context."

There are some more details but I'm feeling kind of lazy right now. I did notice in the end it also stated "It has also been determined that the comprehensive Part I will only be available to candidates on computer" 😕 . I'm assuming they are eventually going to do away with the paper exams or the paper exams are going to eventually incorporate the new format. The dates for when this change occurs has not yet been determined but fortunately for our class, the dean assured us that it will remain the old format for this July's exam 👍 .

are u fuking serious??? Deem never sent our class that information....that friggin sucks....I dont feel like being the guinea pigs on such an important test....

hehehe :meanie:

are you serious?

then, USC (or/and Harvard) guys would be REALLY happy... problem based... they have more experience than any of us...

I'll try and scan you a copy later today. But like I said, the first trial seems to be on computer only so just take the paper exam. It's cheaper anyways. At least you guys have a choice at this point.

What kind of questions would case-based have? Would the questions be like the ones on the pilot paper?

I sure hope that the faculty will incorporate more PBL or have some minor revisions to our curriculum to help us prepare for this, flat4, it seems like you will be immune to these new changes :luck: , but everyone else has to bite the bullet :scared:

flat4 and dr badvibes, have you guys experienced pbl throughout your year(s) at temple respectively?

I can't say i'd be looking forward to that change. Hopefully it won't be implemented till December when our school takes it. It'd lead to a pretty big change in curriculum at most schools I would imagine.

But i'd take the computer portion no matter what, sure it's more expensive but you can schedule it and get your results back much sooner.

hrm i guess next year around this time i will start worrying 🙂..

vcu makes their students take part 1 first year.

ya, at ucla, we have heard about the change too. we will actually have a meeting with the assciate deans this fridayto discuss the pros and cons about taking the board early. i m one of the candidate who is thinking about i should take it early. i will update you from what i learned.

as far as i know, the only disadvantage is that we will be guinea pig. without old exams, it is quite hard to know what to expect. it would be interesting to see how we do on the new format.

I agree with Kato. The case-based questions were MUCH easier than the regular questions. In fact, for most of them you didn't even have to read the frickin' case to get the answer right!

They are NOT like PBL-type questions. You don't do anything with a differential dx. In fact, the term "case-based" doesn't do the format justice. They are more "paragraph-based". You read the paragraph then answer 4-5 questions for each paragraph.

Once again, in my opinion, the case-based are way easier than the traditional format questions.

Also, although I suppose the news is now official, this isn't new information. The ADA has made no secrets about Part I going to a case-based model. This info has been out for several years.

Finally got a look at the pilot today and like everyone said, it really wasn't that bad.I guess the letter was a little more intimidating than I initially expected but I guess it doesn't matter since I don't have to take it (crosses fingers to pass on first try). Just thought I'd give a heads up to those that haven't heard about it who will be taking the boards in the next few years. I know this info's been out for a while but I guess it's right around the corner now as evidenced by the circulation of the pilot exams.

Badvibes-Ask Deets to talk to your class about it. Dr. Deem came in and talked with us today but wouldn't say much about the new format saying our class didn't have to worry about it (don't really know why she freaked us out by sending those letters to us when your class should have been the ones to recieve it 😕 ).

So what is the consensus here?? Will the upcoming 2005 part 1 boards be in a similar "case-based" format as the 2004 pilot exam or the ADA was just gathering data for a future change??

The old asda released will continue to be good study aids as they provide a sense of direction on what material is fair game for the boards. I just hope they keep with similar questions and familiar material!

Well if you mean the exam coming up on July 11th of this year, then the dean of my school assured us that the changes WILL NOT be made for this exam. There is no solid date as of yet but I would be willing to bet this next test is probably the last one that will be in the traditional format. Like everything else here, take it with a grain of salt but I have a strong gut feeling from the letter that was sent out to the deans that the changes are right around the corner.

Yes to that, however I think the change will occur after the 7/11 boards and prior to the December ones. Meaning, sometime in between there. Students taking it on computer will experience it first.

We just had a meeting. Two highest officials from my sch told us that they called and asked ADA independently. ADA said they wont change the format till 2007 or maybe 2008. And when they decide to change it, they will inform us ahead of time. I believe them, but there is still a high chance I will take it this year for other reasons. From what I have heard, the case based questions aint that bad. Yet, I haven't looked into how my sch will change our didactic style to adjust to the new format.

Thanks for the info!!!
All the best guys! 👍
Hopefully pattern remains the same!
