I know everyone has their own reasons. I am interested in seeing as to why you want to be a Doctor.

I really am interested in the REAL reason.
 
Well I want to be an ENT but i also want to do surgeries. When I was little I hated going to every doctor excpet my ENT. I was enthralled with what he did. I think that there would be no better job in the world that to help people with the skills that you've dedicated your life to. To be able to perform surgery on somebody and fix what only a handful of people in the world could. Being able to do that could keep anybody happy.

I used to love the duck tales. I remember when we went to visit India when I was 11. Anyhow, they had Duck tales in hindi and had the ducks in brown color rather then white, to make it indianized. It was pretty funny.

Oh by the way to answer the original question:

I want to be a doctor because when I was a kid, I had a neurological disorder that had me on medicine for 15 years, and I remember when I used to go to the neurologist wanting to do something in medicine because my past inspired me to want to be like my doctor and give back.

I also like the philosophy and what not of medicine and love the field. I don't really want to take the nursing route or PA route, because I want to be in a position where I'm the one making the decisions etc. I can't really explain what I'm trying to say.

Furthermore, there are family members whom have influenced me as well as physician family friends that also inspired me into going into medicine.

Last but not least, my final influences came from a physician I shadowed in highschool and college.
 
I don't like feeling helpless. My dad had a major heart attack, and there was nothing I could do but stand by. I want to feel like I've at least tried something. Even if it doesn't always work. My mom had an unknown respiratory problem, now known as the 9/11 cough, and there was nothing I could do to help her. And I don't like that feeling. I just don't want to feel helpless when someone is counting on me.

yeah, everyone wants to be a doctor to give back and help people. is your letter writer reading over your shoulders or something? I bet if docs made zilch, you'd all suddenly start moaning about how your talents would be better served elsewhere

Umm.. for I'd say 40% of the people.. it is power/chicks/ca ching..
Academic Prestige is a form of power too so add in some more people and you might have a majority..

Do we really need to turn this thread into another one of these reality check threads about the money vs. if there was no money in the profession. While there may be some degree of truth to your statements, we've had enough flame wars about this in the past month or so. I don't think there needs to be another flame war on this topic.

but seriously, i can't really imagine myself doing anything else. i dont like research or any job that is tedious and requires sitting in a cubicle. i looove the human body and how it works, so thats why i want to become a surgeon, hopefully.

apples + oranges = peaches,
seeing people in pain breaks my heart (i'm really am unusually sensitive),
parents brainwashed me and i realized if i wanted to do something that would have a more tangible effect on people's lives, physics/math wasn't the answer
and uzbekistan is in the general area near kazakhstan

therefore, it logically follows that medicine is the career for me 😀

At first it was just my fascination with the human body and how it works. But after doing a whole lot of shadwing I realized that there was no other job I could wake up every morning to and feel like I'm fulfilling my purpose for being on this earth. (Is that Oscar worthy? LOL) That is how I actually feel tho.

Lucky for you, ENT is a surgical subspecialty. You're usually in the OR as often as you are in clinic. I just hope you enjoy flap checks.

My comments weren't directed to you but the person whom decided to start with the reality check posts a few posts above mine. Anyhow, this is a rehash of the other threads that have been on here lately. I swear every other thread these days is about Money vs. Altruism posts about going into medicine. We all get the point. Besides, I gave you my real reasons above. I'm just putting in my 2 cents.

cause Dr. sounds a lot cooler before my last name than Mr., and getting a Ph.D takes too long. Plus, you get to boss around cute little nurses and develop a pretty rad superiority complex! Now quit typing up these silly threads and fetch me a tall skinny latte, honey
