US Med School Rankings.

Hello All!!
I am new to SDN. Does anybody know of a source (website etc.) that has ranked US med schools (Best-Not so good) for the year 2004-2005-2006?

you can get a subscription for $15 to the "premium edition" of usnews.com...but it only gives you through #62 (i guess that's as far as the rankings go). i wouldn't recommend buying it just for 12 more schools, but the premium edition gives a breakdown of how many people applied, were interviewed, and were accepted (lots of guides don't include this last one, just a number of people who attended). it's pretty helpful if you're interested!

anybody with the premium edition, is Jefferson on the list? just curious; I'm not sure how much stock I place in those rankings, but at least a part of me cares 🙂

For a given med school, isn't the "Assessment score by residency directors" more important than the school's actual ranking?

If this is the case, it would be behoove of applicants to go to UTSW rather than Baylor; UMich over Columbia; and University of Wisconsin over Mt Sinai, NYU, Rochester, etc.

Considering residency directors have the most impact on where you go to residency, isn't it better to go somewhere they score high vs. somewhere famous?

Even just based on the normal rankings, yes ;-)

But I'm in agreement with you; the USNews ranking seems much less important than the residency ranking.

Depends...If you're into research, then the funding/faculty member number is big, too. The student/faculty ratio might be something a lot of people care about. So and so forth.

I totally agree that the residency ranking is much more important than the peer-ranking. Who cares what other medical schools think of you?

However, we have to remember that medical school is not just about strategizing to get into a great residency. It's important to look at its inherent value, as well.

Right, I know that. What I'm asking is if those schools are ranked in the 50 - 62 category, since I do not have access to that. Would anyone be kind enough to provide the 50 - 62 list of schools?

And is ranking really that important? I heard that there were bad colleges but is there anything such as a bad medical school? And if there are, I would really like to know the names so that I can apply there.

As all know, there are no BAD medical schools.

Yet, I would definitely recommend researching the history of the school for any past accreditation problems and the residency positions landed by their grads as an indication of their undergraduate medical education to see if the specialties you are intersted in are present.

That aside, another factor you need to consider is that not every school is for every applicant. For instance, many apply to JHU or "Haavurd" because of the name, but in all reality, the school curricula might not be optimum for them. The best way to assess a program is to look at their mission statement and the way their grads have ended up practicing (some schools are REALLY into primary care, and actually design scholarship programs to lure students into those specialties) Then, according to that, you can see which school would the perfect fit for you.

Bottom line: do your own research, listen to your pre-med advisors if you trust them (mine was absolutely awful) and read and re-read school curricula until you know them inside and out. Then, you could create your own personalized ranking them and not care about those inaccurate and unjustified rankings made just to rob $15-30 from desperate pre-meds.
