i have beginning/intermediate proficiency in a couple languages, with my reading being better than my writing or speaking. so i can't honestly check the language boxes and claim fluency. one if them is only somewhat implied by my course transcripts. should i mention these proficiencies somewhere, or just let my coursework leave them to the adcom's imagination?

it doesn't really fit with the themes of my personal statement to mention them there. but do people just tag an unrelated statement about them at the end of the ps?

or what about listing the proficiencies in the work/activities section under
"other"?

wait for the secondaries?

thanks.

I would say unless you're fluent, don't put it on the AMCAS- they'll see it on the transcript anyways.

I'd put it under hobbies/other in the EC section. You could define how proficient in each well enough that you won't get "tested" and have the interview blow up in your face.

I have never heard of anyone being "tested" in an interview--wow that would be out of left field! I am "conversant" in Spanish (got a minor in it, but never studied abroad) and I listed it under languages in AMCAS, since I use it practically every day although if you asked me some word out of left field I may not know it. I have never been "tested" in my interviews even with interviewers that were bilingual. I think if they see you have taken the courses and gotten decent grades, they'll pretty much know you're not lying... although obviously if you have not taken more than 100 or 200 level language courses they would assume that you probably aren't "fluent"... just my best guess though, I agree with putting in hobbies/EC section! 😳
