OK. I have finally decided. I am canceling my NYCOM interview. I decided that it is really not the place for me and if I go I will miss my last week of organic chemistry lab. Anyway, I wanted to post this because I didn't know if anyone wanted to try to take my spot. My interview was 11/30 at the later time. If anyone has an interview after that and they want to try to take my spot, I will let you know when I call them. Good luck to everyone who will be interviewing there!:luck:

I don't think that NYCOM has even gotten to OOS applicants yet. Gettin a little antzy here haha...

I'd seroiusly consider not going to NYCOM interview... this is the next four years of your life. I know that DCOM made an awesome impression, but think of this as a huge investment. I would greatly encourage you to check out NYCOM so you can make a decision not only as a pre-professional but also as a "consumer".

Best of luck and thanks -- i'm sure someone appreciated this!

Thanks! I know I SHOULD go. Everyone keeps telling me that, but NYCOM is not the school for me. Plus, I will miss my last orgo lab. There are a few other schools that I hope to be able to look at, but NYCOM is not one. I want to be in a rural area and there is also the fact that I am married and have four children and can't afford to live on Long Island. I would have gladly traded you WVSOM for NYCOM!Thank you so much for the advice though. I appreciate it. Good luck to you!:luck:

i am in nycom, and it really is awesome. i had tons of interviews and only cancelled after a few accpetances. dont burn bridges or s/t like that they say. its worth a shot. BTW, the rent around nycom isnt bad at all, there are PLENTY of cheap places within 20 minutes of driving. whatever choice you make good luck.

Are there any cheap 4 bedroom apartments that will accept a 170 pound dog? I was going to go, but I have an issue with my organic chemistry lab. My DCOM acceptance is contingent on the completion of it and I don't want to mess that up. I have heard great things about NYCOM, but I am confident that I want to practice rural family medicine and I don't think that NYCOM is the right place for that type of training. Thanks for the input! I really value and appreciate everyone's opinions.😀

Hey, just put the dog in some pants and say you got a really hairy kid! What's it called? hypertrichosis? That is a rather big dog! What kind? Surely your ochem instructor would make arrangements with you? Congrats on DCOM!

   I don't think he would pass for any type of human because he drools too much! He is an English Mastiff and he is actually not quite that big yet because he is only 10 months old, but he is already bigger than most full grown dogs and should mature to that size. Not exactly the dog for an apartment. My teacher is great and he does let me make up labs, but the makeup for Wednesday lab is the Thursday lab and I will miss both and since it it the last week I won't have a chance to make it up. Thanks and congrats to you too! The Chippendale dancer thing sounds like a great fall-back plan! So, good luck with med school or your dancing career! :luck:

OK everyone...I am calling now. Thanks for all the advice. I double checked with DCOM to make sure everything was running on schedule and it is, so off I go to make my phone call.😱 😱 😱 AHHHH, stress!!! Good luck to everyone!:luck:

Wait, should I call them, email them, or send a letter? What is the proper etiquette? Help!!!

Wow, those are very cool dogs! I understand they're great with kids, nd very family oriented! Gotcha on the lab thing! Yeah, I think instead of being torn by my two greatest loves, being a warm-hearted caring physician, or being a heart-warming Chippendale's Dancer, I can have the best of both worlds! Why not go to med school, and earn some much needed cash on the side? Or, at the very least, perform at nursing homes, or start a med school club!

LOL! Your plan sounds perfect! The dog is exactly the way you described him. He is a wonderful dog; both loving and protective. The only problem is that he thinks he is a lap dog.

If you want to practice in a rural area, nycom MAY not be the place, but again dont burn bridges, go for the interview (reschedule if it conflicts), you never know what you will end up doing.

OKAY!!! I GIVE UP!!! I AM GOING!!! LOL!!!   Too much pressure! That is what everyone keeps telling me, so now I am driving to Long Island after five hours of sleep. Then, I am leaving from there to drive down to Kentucky. I feel so disloyal to DCOM; like I am a cheating spouse or something...😱 Oh well, I will let you all know how it goes when I get back. Thanks for all the advice! It is always appreciated. LOVE YOU ALL! 😍 :luck:

Hey, at this point, you're still just in the dating game! I almost cancelled my last intrview, and I am very glad I went.

What about your lab! If you are already generally set on DCOM, then the lab is more important. 👍 Or, can't you reschedule the NYCOM interview?

Hi, doctormom, i want to open house last saturaday and it is one of my dreams school. It is not really in the city.

Unless orgo chem lab is not "pass/fail" important, I think you should go to interview. You never know!! 🙂

Thanks! I am going. I'll let you know how it goes. You probably have a really good chance of getting in there. Did you have your letters sent yet? Good luck! :luck:

I had to miss a biochem exam for my UNECOM interview and a Microbio exam for my UMDNJ interview. Your professors understand that an undergrad degree is a platform for graduate education so talk to them. My professor gave me the option of being graded on 2 exams (instead of 3) or taking the exam when I got back. My microbio TA (after I got it ok'd with the prof) gave me the option of not having the lab included in my grade or taking it with earlier with the other lab section. Be sure you talk to the professor AND TA if this applies to you.

I understand that family is important so do what is best for all of you after seeing what NYCOM has to offer.

Don't forget to push for scholarships once you get multiple acceptances. 😉

My interview is at 10:30 on Thursday. I have lab Wednesday from 5-9. I am going to go home and sleep for a few hours and then leave for Long Island at like 4am. I didn't want to do that, but oh well. You all are stressing me out!!:scared: AHHHH! DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, LOL!

Scholarships...hmmm, brilliant! I already have my BA. I just never had an opportunity to take organic. My acceptance to DCOM is contingent on completion of the class, so I don't want it to get messed up. But, that only means a C. Thanks! I am going, although it will be after 5 hours of sleep.😴

There are actually some affordable big places if you hunt around. I live in Glen Cove where we pay $1800 for a large 3 BR / 2.5 Bath duplex with a garage/basement and 2 floors. I'm approximately 7 min from school. Look a little farther away from school if you're looking to go even cheaper(bayville for example).

BTW, your dog sounds awesome! Big dogs rock. I have a pittbull puppy(13 weeks old) who will reach approximately 90-100 lbs. or so. 😱

Doctormom78,
Check it out, I'll be at NYCOM at the 30th for my interview there as well. Hope to see you there!

$1800 is cheap?!?!? LOL! I might as well cancel my interview now! I can rent a four bedroom house in Tennesse for $400 or buy one for $60,000 on a few acres of land. I can't afford anywhere close to $1800. WOW!!! I assume that you have roommates which is not bad if you are splitting it between three people. But, my husband and I have four children and would need all that space for ourselves. Our place will be paid for out of my husband's income alone and there is no way we could afford that. Well, thanks anyway!😀

Yea, I love my dog. He is good boy, but he will still be twice the size of your dog. LOL! He is just ten months old now and I just took these pictures last week. He thinks he is a lap dog, so he jumps on the couch with you.

$400!?!? are you kidding me?!?! Here, you could not even rent out 1 room of someone's apartment for that! A studio will run you around $700-900 easily! Yes, I have roommates. Our place is relatively cheap for other places I've seen. I don't know what a 4BR would run, but most of the 3BR run for $1650 - $2400. The ones in nice neighborhoods are generally about $2k, but we got a good deal on ours. Hicksville usually has some 3BR for $1650+, which is the cheapest I saw.

Your dog looks awesome! He's gonna be a BIG dog. My gf loves mastiffs. I attached a couple pics as well for viewing pleasure. 😎

$400 in Long Island is probably like the rent for a garage

Your puppy is SOOO cute!!! The cost of living is one of the major issues with even considering NYCOM, but as of today I am going. I guess I will wait and see what happens. 😀

LOL!!! You actually get a WHOLE garage for that?!?! I am suprised it is not more. I went to realtor.com and looked at houses in Old Westbury and they START at about 1 million. 😱 😱 😱

Good. I'm glad you're keeping your options open. Houses in Old Westbury are for elite/celebrities. LOL. Good luck on your interview. If you need to look for places, I used craiglist and newsday.com.

OK everybody, what happens if I call and reschedule my interview? I live in the Albany area and have class until 9:00 Wednesday night. The NYCOM interview is at 10:30-4:30 on Thursday and then I have an interview in Kentucky at 8:00 on Saturday. I am driving both places with my husband and I have to take my 23 month old and 10 month old. I don't know how I can possibly go to the interview this Thursday, but I would like to reschedule it if possible. My family (and the rest of the world😀 ) it pushing me to give NYCOM a chance and I feel that it is a valid argument. I thought I would call them Monday morning and ask if there was anyway that I could reschedule the interview due to the fact that it is my last week of organic chemistry lab and I can't miss the class. Has anyone rescheduled an interview at NYCOM before? How do you think they will respond to it?😕 😱 This is supposed to be the easy part!!! Getting the interview is supposed to be stressful, not getting TO it. LOL!😀

Just a thought, but since it is your last lab you will probably be spending half of it inventorizing all the stuff in your lab locker to return. Our last 4 hour Ochem lab was about 1 hour of lab work and two hours of inventorizing stuff (it actually took about 30 min but we had to wait our turn for the prof to come by and check us out). Anyway, if your last lab is like this, ask the prof if you can come in early and check out all of your stuff early, or get started on the remaining stuff you have to do. My guess is that you can get out at least an hour earlier, if not two or three (depends on how long your lab is).

Your milage may vary.

I know my profs. used to let us start labs early if someone had to go for an interview. Only I don't know if you said lab was your last class. But I called NYCOM to request an earlier interview. I was originally scheduled for 11/28 but I called a few days later for an earlier interview, and it was fine. Dosen't hurt to ask.

Sorry, it is technically my second to last lab. It is the last "real lab" and is a long lab. Plus, I have some IR to do from previous labs. The following week is check-out as well as a short lab. I wasn't counting that one as an actual lab. I also have to bring my kids if I go this Thursday and then my husband has nothing to do with them for six hours. Thanks!

Yea, some idiot probably rescheduled their intervew last minute and so you got a spot. LOL!

I just wanted to let you all know that I called and rescheduled my interview for 12/7. They were actually REALLY nice about it. YAY! So, I guess I will be going to check it out afterall. They had the first two weeks of December open for Tues, Wed, and Thurs. WOW! I can't believe that have that many spots! I wonder if it is because they are keeping them open for in-state applicants. Hmmmm.....😕

WOW! That sucks! Fortunately I have my DCOM acceptance already so that really takes the pressure off me. Most professors I have had are very understanding with things that have come up in my life. I agree with you to a point, but you also don't want to screw up your grades or fail a class to go to an interview. It worked out well for me in the end. I am will go to orgo this week, PCSOM on Saturday, and then I will have my NYCOM interview next week. 😀 :luck:
