Does anyone know of any "cush" programs (i.e. few call months, 40-60 hours per week)?

There are several allopathic lists floating around SDN and I thought it might be nice to have one for DOs who have worked our butts off and want to relax for a year.

I'll start: Westchester in Miami is rumored to have no call at all.

Worked your butt off where? In medical school?

🙄

Unless youre planning on becoming a Radiologist, I would suggest doing an internship that will prepare you for residency rather than one that gives you the most time off.

That's very astute of you! I am actually planning on becoming a Radiologist.

Im sure you are. This way you can go through your entire professional life without ever being certain of any clinical situation you encounter.

Rather than judge the OP's motivation for asking the question, I'll actually offer an answer. Palmetto in Miami is pretty nice as well...one month of night float and no other call the rest of the year. It's not as nice as Westchester in terms of hours but not bad. Congrats on choosing Rads-it's an excellent field.

I'm interested in this type of information as well, especially dually approved (AOA/ACGME) cush programs.

I'm applying for Ophthalmology. Would prefer to start my PGY-2 year pumped and well rested. I don't think there's anything wrong with that...🙂

Thanks Longhorn. You made my day.

DOCTORSAIB. I have been doing some research and I found that there are several cush Transitional Years listed in the allopathic forums that are dually accredited including:
Carilion in Roanoke, VA
Albert Einstein in Philadelphia
Riverside in Newport News, VA
Christiana Healthcare in Wilmington Delaware.

There are also some DO internships at the same hospitals as cush allopathic TYs but not dually accredited. These include:
York Hospital in York, PA
Mercy in Pittsburgh, PA
Oakwood in Trenton, MI.

Roanoke and York are said to be very competitive so perhaps the DO internships can serve as a back door.

I don't advocate a cush internship, no matter what you plan on doing with your life...I'm going into Derm. though I didn't take the hardest internship, I could find...I found one that would provide myself with a good education and a decent life.

If you want cush....
Henderson, KY....no call.
Indy...month of night float.
Sun Coast in Largo, FL...also a nice call schedule.

In the allo world...
Trevor Clinic in Madisonville, KY....no call.

Wow man, you've really developed a pointy online personality as of late. I remember you as one of the good guys not too long ago.

I emailed Westchester and it looks like call is only on the weekends and you rotate with 6 interns. So its every 6th weekend.

Please, I dare you to try doing your job whatever specialty it is without a radiologist and watch your patients suffer the consequences. Oh and as always... please correlate clinically.

Yeah, I have been staying off the forums because of how many times I open a thread, thinking it might be a good, relevant conversation, and I get slapped by his negativity and hostility. Yet another thread ruined because JP needs to tell off the OP.

Don't discount doing a solid internship. I think doing an internal medicine emphasis internship with Q4 call made me a more well rounded physician and definitely made me tougher. I also believe it made me a more competitive applicant. More importantly, I had a blast.

Just a different perspective...

I'll give a shout out for Illinois Masonic in Chicago. The resurrection internship is supposed to be cush. Cook county is tough and so is that St. James one.

As for Masonic my review is on scutwork under the Transition Year section.

As far as intern year goes, i really enjoyed it (in the context of medical training. I didn't enjoy it like, lets say, a vacation to Puerto Vallarta). Sure, medicine floors suck, but where does that NOT exist.

Got plenty of clinical skills from my Cards, Pulm, MICU, CCU, and ER months.

Call months were: MICU (Q3 or 4), CCU (Q3 or 4), 2 month floor medicine (Q 4), and one moth of night float. Thats IT!

With electives like Path/Anes, Radiology, and Hospital Administration, you know your life isn't going to suck.

Look, I'm all for working hard and learning stuff. But there is no reason, whatsoever, to torture yourself to achieve that. Remember, the more crappy medicine floor months ya do, the more pissed off you'll be.

You are still a glorified secretary and BODY MOVER. The only kicker is that you can kill people if you don't know what you are doing and are to scared/proud/stupid to ask.

There is a difference between being cush and learning absolutely nothing at all during your internship year. I am also doing radiology, and I love my internship year. I would not recommend doing Westchester. You are pretty much a glorified third year medical student. You will learn absolutely nothing. You write only H&P's on patients, no orders. It is kind of discouraged for you to even write orders.. You will need to be somewhat familiar with writing orders as a radiologist, especially if there is a contrast reaction. If you are looking in that area of Florida, I would recommend Palmetto. However, they prefer students who rotate with them. They have a long line of radiology interns going there.
