Anyone hear anything back from Iowa after their interview yet?
Their admissions office probably wont give us much info will they?

I haven't heard anything, but I just interviewed last Friday... and I'm not expecting to hear back until spring cause I'm OOS and I'm pretty sure my interview went pretty badly....

But the girl who gave us a tour said she interviewed late October and heard back late November if that helps at all.

It can't hurt to call and ask. Don't they start handing out acceptances this week?

what? i didnt know they were already giving out interviews. was this by mail or email? or status check?

Interview by e-mail. Wonderful facilities and faculty--hope you get a chance to check it out, wood41!

anyone have any luck actually calling the admissions office? will they tell you if you have been reviewed yet?

yeah i too am debating on calling. im afraid they are just going to tell me to check my status online. etc etc. i want to do this for umich as well.

I just received an acceptance letter from them today, so they have started sending them out. (Yay! I'm going to be a doctor!!!! 😀)

I also called a couple days ago to check on my status (I interviewed 9/26) and the lady said they couldn't talk about anything over the phone. They send out acceptances at this point and that's it. The people who go into the rolling admissions process won't be notified at all. She did say something about some people be notified in December regarding their status. Hope that helps!

I interviewed last year and participated in the PBL trial. How did it work as part of the actual interview? Do you guys feel like it provided useful information about you as a candidate or was it competitive and worthless?

Anyone hear anything from Carver since mid-October?

I'm interviewing there in 2 wks. Thus far, they seem to be pretty considerate in terms of offering hotel discounts & shuttling service to the school. For those who interviewed already, can you share your personal experiences with the PBL component of the interview? I've read some posts about it in the past but am still feeling a bit antsy about it...

Ah it was seriously no sweat. The M4 that proctored ours was very cool and really just walked us through it. As far as the weight it pulls in their decision-- I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just go in with an open mind and be ready to do a little bit of brainstorming out loud.

What do you mean by "brainstorming"? Are we going to be asked questions on cases? I've my interview in 2 weeks and I'm a little worried about the CBL thing. Thanks.

You'll just go through the steps of a typical CBL session. You'll start with vague information ("woman walks in complaining of such and such...") and work your way up to ordering and getting back test results to find out what the patient has. There is really no medical knowledge needed coming in. I think they were just looking to see if you can work well in a group and if you can use basic logic to step your way through a problem.

Edit: You go through the case in a group of ~7 other interviewees + one M4 proctor

Thanks a lot, mongrel. You've been a great help. 🙂

How do they inform you of interviews? Email? or an update on the status page?

It was e-mail invite for me.

It was an email invite (11/9). The wierd thing was that my file wasn't even complete yet, but I still got an interview. It's now complete.

When were you complete?

Excuse me...I meant when did you send in your application?
I completed my secondary on 11/3/07 and got the invite on 11/9. My LOR's took a while to get there.

I just interviewed there on November 26 and I was really impressed. They told us that they would tell us by mid-January, but I have a feeling they will mail acceptance letters in mid-December as well. Best of luck!

I received an Acceptance from Iowa today 12/06/2007. I'm an Iowan fyi and I interviewed November 14. Good luck to all.

BTW, long time lurker, first time poster.

did the acceptance notification come by snail mail or email?

Their acceptances are always by snail mail and they were sent out the 4th of December. I live ~3 hours from IC and it took two days.

May not be looking to good for me then, I interviewed Nov. 12th and I live in Iowa city. If they sent out acceptances on Dec 4th.... lets just hope my mailman is slow 🙁

Congrats gwill024, If you end up at Iowa, I think you will really enjoy it.

Congratulations! I interviewed on 11/30, and really liked the school. I'm OOS so I'm not sure what my chances are. Good luck to the rest of us.

Thank you all for your kind words. Don't give up hope though. They only admit a little more than half of their in-staters throughout the rolling admissions. Although the waiting is horrible (I applied last year too, so I know what its like) its worth it in the end. Good luck to everyone and keep me posted if you hear anything.

I just received an acceptance from Iowa

I just received an acceptance from Iowa today (12/7/07), am an OOS applicant, and interviewed on Nov. 14th as well. It took 3 days to arrive. Being that I was thoroughly impressed with the school and the people associated with it, I am absolutely stoked with this news! Good luck to those of you who applied; maybe I'll see some of you this summer 👍

Hey, Congrats! The winter weather here in Iowa must have delayed some of those letters a day or two. Good luck with your other schools and maybe I'll see you there in the summer/fall.

Has anyone from the November 26th interview heard anything about when the adcom is meeting?

For those who were accepted, did you send thank you notes to your interviewers? Just wondering, 'cos I haven't been able to get to the post office. And I think it's probably too late to send anything now.

does iowa tend to help OOS w/the ridiculously high tuition

So I interviewed September 24th and have heard nothing. Has anyone else from the Sep 24th interview been accepted? Just wondering and being paranoid.

When I spoke with the admissions office, they said that the adcom would be meeting one more time this month, but that some people might not hear anything until the end of January.

I did not send any so I don't think it's imperative.

Thanks. I don't feel bad for not being able to send anything then.

Its not required (duh) Its just a nice gesture. The interviewers have already made their decision about you (made immediately after your interview and cemented in a couple paragraphs that are submitted to adcom). Not required, but not looked down upon either because Kathy (I think that was her name) gave us instructions and her card if we wished to do so. I'm sure plenty of people get in and become successful doctors without sending thank yous to all their interviewers.

About the financial aid. I think its a little better than middle of the road. The average debt leaving Iowa is less than 100,000. Thats about $50,000 less than the highest. Its not like what you're going to see at Mayo, but then again Mayo only has like 40 students. They don't throw money at you, but they don't leave you high and dry. (One of my other acceptances has a disclaimer that says something like if you can't secure funds its not their fault...)

Are we sure that all of the letters went out on the 4th? I doubt it would take 6 days to get to me (though I am OOS)... and I interviewed on 10/17. So I guess I should I assume I'm waitlisted, then?

I thought I had a pretty good chance there, too... 🙁

P.S. where is the insider info coming from about the 4th? 😕

does that happen to be MCW? they made interviewees sign a form like that before leaving the interview day. it was kinda difficult paper to sign because when you add it all up, it's A LOT of money!

Not all the letters went out on the fourth. They send out letters periodically. The 4th was from me because that is the date on the top of my acceptance letter. There was also another guy from the thread (and actually the same interview day) with the same. We interviewed on Nov. 14.

About the crazy letter thing...it wasn't MCW it was SLU.

Anybody from who interviewed nov 26 or later heard back yet?

At my MSTP interview they said the med school adcoms would be meeting again December 18th.

Did they offer you a scholarship right off the bat, without receiving your financial info?

That's awesome. Congrats!

I was in today for an interview (12/14) and the word from the ad com was that they would make admissions decisions on us by mid-january. If we don't hear from them by then, then we have been entered into rolling process for more consideration and a decision by mid-March. So all of you who interviewed before the 14th are probably in a similar situation.

Another thing, the FinAid lady (Penny) said avg debt is $130,000 (in-state and oos averaged)....which is the most I've seen from a public institution thus far. I saw someone say 50,000 earlier, and that is wrong based on what I heard today.

PS The CBL was no big deal. This is the first year they're doing it so they really aren't weighing it heavily. Be logical and you can't mess it up.

Yea I wasn't sure where the numbers were coming from either. Judging by the OOS tuiton, you're looking at 40k for tuition + 15k for misc. (books, room & board, etc.), that's 55k a year. So, for your entire education there you're looking at ~220,000 in debt as an OOS student unless you get some kind of scholarship. I guess 220,000$ is not that outrageous compared to some schools, but it's still pricey nonetheless.
