i think the title pretty much says it all.

i can get a few more As on my transcript if i wait till the end of June and then submit to AMCAS like the last day of the month. is it worth it? my school doesn't even send their committee letter to schools till end of July or maybe even early August at earliest.

*oops, the "different" in the title should be "difference"

1. it's a difference of a month, yes it matters. you can update schools about summer classes later.

2. it makes no difference if your letters aren't in.

3. your committee is royally screwing you over.

that's a bit alarmist. the end of july for lor's is ok. try not to get too far into august though.

Applying early is overrated. Applying late is awful. As long as you can be complete by early October you'll be fine.

Actually it's not that bad. Most secondaries will come around that time...maybe a few will come before, but either way, why shouldn't the committee wait until they can report on his full grade report? Having said that, a month could matter, but really not that much. I know plenty of people that applied in July or even August and got in just fine. If you need those extra A's before you apply (i.e. they will boost up your GPA to get you past the unofficial "numbers" screen), then wait. If you don't feel you need them right away, then just update later

no no no, my LORs are already done. the thing is i had to submit those to the committee. the committee looks at them, discuss amongst each other, and then your premed advisor writes the actual committee letter. the thing is the committee doesn't get together and meet till at least mid July and then your adviser writes the main letter and makes the premed packet to send out to schools. they include the 4 LORs in the premed packet they send to the med schools. since i know they don't meet till mid July, I'm not convinced they actually send out the packets any earlier than late July.

SO, in MY case, does it really matter if I submit grades to AMCAS early June versus the very end of June? I mean, isn't the important thing that you just don't miss the 1st wave of interviews in october? if you're file is complete by end of August, that's plenty of time isn't it?

It does take time to verify your application and you don't need your letters to be ready until you start sending in secondaries. So I think you're fine either way...your letters won't have an effect on this, it's when you submit your AMCAS.

well yea, i'm jus saying it doesn't matter if my primaries are sent in a lil late cuz my total application will still be completely probably later in August due to my school waiting that long to send out their packets. sure my primaries could get to the schools earlier, but it wouldnt matter if i got my secondaries sooner because id still have to wait for my school to send in the LORs before i'm complete. i'm gonna use that SDN thread to get secondaries ahead of time anyway, so i can still work on them before i technically get them. am i right on this?

If the grade will actually be on your transcript by end of June then go ahead and wait. But sometimes it takes weeks for grades to hit transcripts. Here is the gist of the timeline:

June 5 - early July are basically all the same. Anyone who submits those times will get secondaries the same time, and if they have fast turnaround for those will get interviews and acceptances as early as possible.

mid-July thru late July is midrange. Not late, but you won't get secondaries the moment they come out. If you have fast secondary turnaround (less than one week) then you should still be in pretty good shape.

August is getting average, not a good idea if you have bad numbers.

Sept is pretty late as many are already interviewing.

October is definitely late as people are already getting accepted.

Nov and Dec - why bother?

when you say submit, do you mean having your primaries sent to the schools or submitting your grades to AMCAS? from what i've heard, it takes a few weeks for them to doublecheck your grades before they sendout the primaries to the schools. so in your context, if i submit my AMCAS end of June/early July, am i included in the june-early july group or mid-late july group?

thanks...also my grades will appear on my transcript by late June. the summer semester ends the 27th or 28th but the grades go right on there within a few days...not a few weeks later

If you submit later in the season it can take a few weeks - but early on it doesn't. When I say submit I mean submitting AMCAS with all your transcripts turned into them. When I submitted July 5th or so 2 years ago they verified and sent my primary to schools by July 9th. It only takes a few weeks later in the season when there is a longer line.

So yes if you submit june-early july you will be in the june early july group - no problem. In fact, the first time I tried to submit was like June 21st and they started verifying it the next day (it bounced back because they lied to me about a transcript but still - once they start verifying it it takes like a day to be done).

If the grades will be available by late June I would wait for them. Thats awesome that it takes so little time for the grades to hit.

awesome, thanks man.
do most schools take longer to get grades updated or something? i thought all schools were like mine...have the grades up in a few days after finals are over lol

Haha, I wish my schools were like that...

I went to Cal and the grades are available to students a few days after finals - but they don't post to the transcripts for 2-3 wks.

yes i understand this. i was making a more generalized statement. whatever you are sending as an LOR whether it is individual letters or a comittee one just get the LOR thing to the schools by the end of july.

first wave of interviews in october? they start the first week of september. invites start in august (maybe even july).

Haha....while I pretty much agree with the gist of your post, if I had not bothered, I wouldn't have been accepted. I definitely would advise against applying at the last second, but it works out for some people. Very stressful, though.

our profs have 36 hours after the last day of finals to post final grades- they hit transcripts within 24 after that. finals are over here and I have 3 out of my 4 class grades up- and it was the first final I took that still hasn't posted (but they have a few days ugh!)

WHAAAT? are you serious?? okay, i need to speak with my adviser as soon as finals are over!! man, i couldn't get it all completed by the end of July if i send grades to AMCAS at the end of June. think about it...the schools prolly won't even send me my secondaries till end of July?
