Being a pre-med, I am prone to panic. So here goes: I'm filling out my Air Force HPSP application and am wondering about this question about contact lenses. I doubt that's really a hold up, is it? Has anyone been accepted to the Air Force Scholarship program while wearing contacts??

OK, next question, slightly more serious. What about debt? My financial situation is ok now, but a couple years ago (like a *****) I took out a mortgage on an investment property and then (surprise!) as a busy undergrad, there was NO way to keep up on it and the property was foreclosed on. Do you think a bad financial situation will keep me out of the scholarship? Like I said, I'm OK now, but my credit score is lousy, lousy, lousy.

Anyone ever been accepted with a similar situation?

Panic......

1) Calm down
2) Calm down some more
3) I don't see why contact lenses would limit someone from acceptance, but you certainly should not even consider lying about it. It is what it is, and just as with your financial situation you can't change what's already done. Just dress up your application as nicely and truthfully as possible, and what happens happens. Good luck!

I suggest you post this question under the military medicine forum. You can find some great information regarding HPSP there and those that post in that forum will have the experience to answer your question.

Debts could seriously impact your ability to get a security clearance. I think every physician has to have at least a general clearance. No idea what the threshold is for eligibility and money problems though.

Bankruptcy isn't a great thing...forclosure isn't much better. However, if you are upfront about your debts and you have a history of paying on them (which you can establish if you start doing so now), then you would likely be able to get a SECRET clearance. I wouldn't expect to get much higher than that, but you won't need much higher than that either.

I am guessing that this will be even more common given the current economic outlook.

1. I wear glasses or contacts and am in the military. You aren't going to be a pilot, so it doesn't really matter.

2. I don't feel sorry for you. Thanks for playing a part in the biggest economic downturn of our time.

3. If it comes up, be truthful. I doubt it will hurt your ability to be in military medicine.

Corrective Lenses/ Vision Corrective Surgery are all OK or waiverable. No worries there.

Your credit can be a stumbling block, but if you can demonstrate that you have improved your financial position, it should not be a show stopper.

I have a quick question......I am looking at the Air Force program. Can anyone tell me how competitive it is to get accepted into this? Do they accept only a certain number of people? How competitive is it overall?

Sorry for the basic quesitons, but have had trouble getting a hold of my recruiter (maybe this is a bad sign)

Thanks.
