Repeating a Year Army HPSP

Hi, everyone. I am a second year medical student at a very expensive, private DO school. I joined the Army HPSP shortly after starting my first year, accepting the 4 year scholarship.
I found out yesterday that I failed the last in-house exam of second year by a few points, and unfortunately, my school is most likely going to decide for me to repeat my second year because of the one failure. I am absolutely crushed. At this point, I’ve come to terms with repeating the year and am just hoping it will make me a better doctor in the long run, but I am distraught about what will happen regarding my commitment to the Army via HPSP. I’ve already contacted my student advisor, but likely will not hear anything until Monday. Does anyone have any insight as to what will happen? Will I be separated, and forced to either pay back the funds or be ordered to active duty immediately? Will I be granted LWOP and be responsible for tuition for the repeated year? Any answers would be appreciated. Thank you.

The most likely scenario is that you’ll have to pay for the repeated year out of pocket, but that’s about it.

Technically you did fail the terms of your contract, so they could come asking to recoup the money they spent on you. I haven’t seen this happen before, as the military doesn’t like to lose new numbers.

Make sure you reach out to the program office and let them know the situation as soon as you have any concrete info on if you are repeating the year vs not (which sounds like you already did.)
