Congratulations guys! If you have any questions I am a D3 and can try to answer them for you. So who's coming to Kornberg?

See you next year ! I got my email on Wednesday, interviewed the late November. I'm excited for 4 years of steak sandwiches haha

bump, lets keep it at the top.

I have become a huge fan of Primo Hoagies since I started school here, but haven't tried a cheese steak yet. Congratulations, everyone!

Ooooh, cheesesteaks will ruin your health, but in good fashion!

Either way, I'm really really really excited about my acceptance! Huzzah!!!

I too got in! Did anyone go to the Nov 12 interview? FYI, if you wanna try the best Sicilian pizza, go to this little pizza shop called La Rosa right off the Snyder subway station; it is truly off-the-hook. Anyone interested in a room mate?

i like the cheese steak by dalessandro's (sp?) and argento's, both up in roxborugh.

meat, cheese, and brocolli!

1992corolla what year are you? You live in roxy? And i think argentos is okay, not the best i need to find some better pizza

I agree, Argentos isnt the best, its all right i guess.
Havent had their cheese steaks, but Delisandros (sp) are good.
I think its worth making the trip down to south philly for good cheese steaks, Jims, Pats, Genos, Ricks

but i dont have time to eat them often. prob for the best.

I've had better luck with pizza from Tony A's or outside of philly.

Just don't get Sharp Provolone, I learned that one the hard way.

Temple emailed me early November requesting an interview, but I was booked out until the first week of December. I was really impressed with Temple, and they have since moved ahead of all other schools on my list. I emailed Brian and told him I was serious about attending. Hopefully I'll get in! If so I'll see you guys later this year!

Does anyone know the best places to live if I'm looking for a family friendly suburban area. I've heard Roxborough/Manayuk are good areas to look. Any other suggestions?

Also if you have any suggestions of apartments/condos in those areas, I'd be interested as well. Thanks!

I am married, but with no kids. I was looking at some apartments in Center City that were decent. They cost about as much as the apts in Roxborough, but they are a little smaller. The plus is that you are in the City, and only 2miles from school. Everything I've seen ranges 1600-2000.

I know there is an apt complex in Rox that has lots of students in it. I just can't remember the name...

I really think I'm attending but I haven't made any definite decisions. Brian mentioned an apt complex that alot of dental students live in but i'm not sure of the name either. Any dental student wanna fill us in on the good places to live?

During our interview Brian mentioned about summer park & he said rent is about$ 1200-$1300. Not sure if this well help....

summit park and henry on the park

summit park: they have a clubhouse with $2 beers/drafts (used to be $1), steak night, taco nights, etc., nicer gym, but smaller apartments, everything is included in rent (water, cable, internet etc)

henry on the park: crappy gym, ok pool, no club house, apartment is hotel style, way way way bigger apartment and room, you have to pay for electricity and your own cable and internet

basically they are both the same price...

both are filled with dental students and the area is pretty safe. sometimes we forget to lock our door at night

The name of the Apartment Complex in Roxborough is Summit Park.

thanks for the info!!!

Okay Corolla, you can probably answer this list of questions for me, but you're certainly not obligated to do so. :D (I coulda PM'ed you but I figure your response may help others, too.) I've gotten into NJDS (state school) and Temple. Aside from cost differences, the main thing that is really preventing me from saying 'definitely Temple' is the thought of having to take public transportation OR walk two blocks from the parking garage to the school.

Is it indeed true that the closest garage is the one two blocks away? Do you know of anybody who has had serious issues, i.e. muggings/car broken into? (I realize this can happen in Newark just as easily as in Philly, but I'm more familiar with the Newark area, and their parking garage is much closer to the school.) I know they said that an escort is available if need be, but realistically, who has time to wait for somebody to come walk you to your car .... that's assuming the escort service is like the one at my undergrad, where you'd wait upwards of 45 minutes for them to show up.

Do students really tend to carpool if they drive or was that just something that was said at the interview?

Second question: Is it true that you can really spend as much time as you want (basically) in any of the specialty clinics, and that work you do there will go towards your graduation requirements? (E.g. if I do a restoration in pedo it'd count the same as if I did the same type of restoration in the general clinic.) This was one of the things we were told at the tour, and one of the major selling points to me over NJDS, so I hope there is truth to it haha. I do realize that you do have to spend some time in each of the clinics, lol.

Third question: Are the lecture halls survivable? We weren't shown the lecture halls during the tour.

Thanks for any responses!

1992Corolla. I'm in the same situation as rewJW and would appreciate your help. I've read on here that you're part of a clinic renovation committee or something to that effect so you might know more with what's happening at Temple than most other students. Could you help answer some of my questions below?

1) I've heard complaints that Temple students do an excessive amount of pre-clinic/lab work. At the interview, they mentioned they were looking into decreasing this amount. When do you project they will implement this change? Fall 09?

2) I, too, am curious about the lecture halls. Are they in horrible shape? I'm not too picky about where my classes will be held as long as they don't smell like wet socks or guy's locker room. Oh I guess that was kinda redundant. I heard that they would like to renovate those eventually. By when do you think?

3) Do they plan to do away with those carts that students wheel around? What other changes will the class of 2013 see? major or minor...

PLEASE HELP! THANK YOU!

If you are worried about walking two blocks then you have issues.
The area during the day isnt bad at all. You will see hundreds of students, doctors, professors, walking the couple of blocks that makes up the health science campus every day. and as long as you smart about your surroundings you will have no trouble at all. if you are there at night they light up Broad street with flood lights to help keep the area light up so it isnt that bad.

The closest parking lot to the D-school is kitty corner to the dental school, so you have to cross the street, they you are pretty much at the school.
Otherwise you would have to walk two blocks, which isnt dangerous at all, unless you are completely self centered, just keep an eye out and you'll be ok.

A lot of students do carpool to school.

I have no idea on the clinic, i hope to find out soon.

My concern isn't during the day; it's if I end up on campus til very late at night and have to walk back to my car alone. I'm not an idiot and am not going to go hiking back to my car listening to an iPod or anything like that -- it's just that I know a person who has been mugged at gunpoint in Philly while walking alone at night. It's good to know that the area is very well lit at night. I was obviously only there during the day for my interview so I wasn't sure what the area looks like after dark. Btw, thanks for telling me I have issues. I'm aware -- my issue is that I'm concerned about my potential safety. I think it is ignorant to not take safety into consideration, regardless of what school you are thinking about attending.

I agree with RewJW on this one. Temple is my number 1 (was no 2 til I wasn't offered an interview at OSU) choice, and if I get in after my interview this upcoming week then I will put down my deposit right away. BUT, the only thing that does concern me A LOT is the safety. Especially being a female... you can "look out" but in the event of an attack there could be little you can really do to protect yourself. We are just making sure and if we think it will affect how we do in D-schooll...... aka dont feel safe enough to stay late so don't get as much work done.... then it is definitely important to our attending that school. I know that is the sole reason my parents are against the idea of going to Philly.

close to making my final decision... 1992COROLLA please help with our questions... see above posts. Thanks!!!

As a female, I sympathize. the area does have its stinky apples loitering around, and I am on my guard when I walk around at night. I have also learned how to instinctively avoid these people. when you think about their point of view, they are not looking for a steal that requires a lot of effort. that means, you don't stop when they ask for something, no matter how polite it sounds; you make sure you walk "with a purpose"; if you are going to wait for a ride or a bus somewhere, make sure that it is relatively safe.

I have only been at temple for 1 semester, but I have managed to leave before dark every day, except for one night. I have yet to buy mace (I am waiting for a good price on bear mace), but I think it is a good idea to carry it around.

It is hard to describe exactly how safe/dangerous it is, because everyone has different ideals in those terms. Everyone who says that it is safe during the day is correct. I would not be surprised if lots of students went into pre-clinic during the weekends, just so that they would not have to stay late at night. Students get their work done, and they graduate on time.

But yes, if you want a school where you do not have to worry about any of that, then Temple is probably not for you. If you go to Temple, you have to learn street smarts. Other people will help, but ultimately, you are an adult and you live in a world where not everyone is honest and crime does happen.

The lecture halls are not stinky or filthy. When I started classes, I didn't even notice anything wrong with them until I heard other students' complaints. They fulfill their purpose - you sit on them during lecture and take notes. They are not new. If any of you would like, just ask an upper classmen to show you the lecture halls (or PM me and I will take you to them).

The dean said that students will no longer be using those carts for clinic once renovations are complete.

Thank you for your insights, loved. :)

Got my acceptance just before Christmas and putting down my deposit soon. I'm Temple bound.

And for all the people worried about the neighborhood. I went to high school in an area that makes South Philly look like the suburbs. I was there for four years and if there was ever a person to get robbed it was me. I wore a uniform with a tie, I was Five feet nothing, weighed under 100 pounds, and my backpack was double my weight. As Loved mentioned, as long as you just walk where your going, mind your business, and don't put yourself in an obviously bad situation like asking directions from the guy scratching his head with a switchblade you'll be fine.

See some of you in the Fall.

Go Owls.

You're def not from Philly. Get it right. It's called Cheesesteak. If you go to Geno's or Pat's to get them, you gotta order the right way - "the type of cheese" then whether you want ("wit") or don't want (don't say anything) fried onions. So for example, you go up to the counter and say "Provolone, wit" or just say, "American". And yep, it's not "with", it's pronounced "wit". :)

I mailed my deposit today! Huzzah!! See you all in the fall!!!!

this one is pathetic compared to last year's. come on guys.

this one is pathetic compared to last year's. come on guys.

Yeah seriously, want to buy some school spirit! I know there are a few people still deciding where to send in there deposit though. By Jan 15 I'm sure we'll hear more.

Now the fun stuff... like financial aid and apartment hunting. I'm thinking Summit Park or Manayunk so far but I have some relatives in Jenkintown trying to convince me to get an apartment nearby. I think Jenkintown might be a little cheaper and I could take the train to school, but I think I'd rather be where there are more students, at least for the first year. Plus Summit Park's gym sounds nice. Are the workout facilities at Temple worth using?

Yeah, I do have a few questions about housing. Truthfully, I'd rather not live in Roxborough or Manayunk because it's a little too pricey for me. I was thinking of living down in Center City in the University City neighborhood. I was also looking into Northern Liberties and the Art Museum district as well, but those are slightly out of my price range. Do you guys and girls have any suggestions of places that are under $700 per person (i wouldn't mind having a roommate)?

And also, is it unheard of for Temple Dental students getting part time jobs during the school year?

...And also, is it unheard of for Temple Dental students getting part time jobs during the school year?

From what I hear, it's strongly advised not to get a part-time job. Don't listen to dentists that went to school over 20 years ago. Every one of them has asked me how i'd pay for school and suggested to get at least some kind of job. Evidently it was possible to do this back then. Not now. Well, maybe unless you're a pure genius.

Roxborough or Manayunk is cheaper than Center City.

you can get a nice place with a room mate for less than 700 pp

a few people have jobs, but it isnt common.

a few people have jobs, but it isnt common.

Agreed. I do not know about future semesters, but it seems to be do-able during first semester. A big factor, I think, is how familiar you are with the material.

You can find a room for less than $700 in Center City, as long as you have a roommate and do not mind infestations. I have seen plenty of nice looking 2 bedroom apartments for ~$1300/month, but they are not in the ritzy part of CC and you might have to set up some mice traps.

Are you all going to check out apartments in person? I highly recommend seeing a place in person before signing the lease, unless you know from a very reliable source that it is honest.

Hey I just wanted to congratulate everyone. I had a very tough time turning down an offer to Kornberg. I was heavily impressed by the social atmosphere of the school. I really like how the students, faculty, and admissions staff interacted with each other. I could easily imagine myself being happy and having fun at Kornberg. The school really fits my personality. However because of several important factors like location I am choosing to go to Michigan. I am from the midwest and have always dreamt of going to Michigan. It is a powerhouse in the midwest. Sadly the name did play a factor in my choice. Most importantly I tend to be more laid back in general about things which I dont want to do with my dental education. I feel Michigan would be a better fit than Temple in that aspect. Anways Im sure that everyone who chooses Temple will never regret their decision and hope all the best to you guys. Party up!

Are there many students that live in northern Montgomery county? Mapquest lists it as ~35-45 minutes away from the dental school. Is it that far or does it take a lot longer with Philly traffic?

Apartments/townhouses I've found seem to be a newer, cheaper, and could probably be worth an extra 10-15 minute drive. Do you know of any students that carpool down from that area? I wouldn't want to be a total loner living that far out.

I am thinking between NYU and Temple. Pretty tied up and have to make a decision pretty soon. I have been looking at some housing near Temple and am looking into Summit park. Is it hard to find housing there and how early should one begin searching for it? How do we get around looking for roommates, because I am defninitely interested in one. How far is the summit park place from the school, is it a commutable distance? I am a little concerned about the Philadelphia area near the shcool, but is it similar to NYU surrounding area? i am still on teh waiting list for UMDNJ, which is my state school and my top choice, I guess. so is Newark, NJ similar to the Philadelphia aera? Please help me in making my decision, any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Where in northern Montgomery county are you thinking? I lived in Horsham and now currently live in North Wales (which is the border of Montgomery and Bucks county). If I take public transit, the commute can take up to an hour, if not more. But if I drive, local roads will take probably just under an hour during the morning commute while taking route 1 would probably take me over an hour, easy. It all depends on where in Montgomery county you're looking at.

We live in northern montgomery county and the commute is def more than 45 minutes. Actually, my wife commutes everyday, and the traffic gets pretty bad to the tune of about an hour each way. It is nicer out here, but if you're single and don't have any kids, I would recommend staying closer to the school.

There have been a couple places my wife and I liked up in Limerick/Royersford area (ie. Summer Chase Apartments). I'm just trying to decide if that's too far away. Hearing that there are others making the commute makes me feel better. Do you guys know of any that live that far away? Do you have any recommendations of nice apartments/townhouses to look into that may be a little closer, but still in a family friendly area (looking for a 2 bedroom place -- a garage would be a plus)?

Ive live in Summit Park, Montco, West Philly, Mt Airy, Center City, and spent a lot of time at Temple during undergrad so I figured I chime in . . .

Northern Montgomery County: If youre thinking Phoenixville/Collegeville/Limerick . . . personally I think that is way too far. If youre looking for a suburban environment I'd look at Springfield, Abington, or Cheltenham . . . even Mt Airy and Chestnut Hill. The former are more family oriented but will still take 20-45 mins to drive, and depending on the time of day maybe longer. Mt Airy and Chestnut Hill are a little closer, and really cool neighborhoods. They're essentially on the other side of the park from Roxborough/Manayunk and Im sure there are apartments more than reasonabley priced. Summit Park would also be a good alternative.

Manayunk/Roxborough: Younger, undergrad/yuppie crowd, especially the former. A lot of bars, and retail with La Salle, St. Joes and Philly U kids. Kinda drives rents up because a lot of land lords are collecting from undergrads' parents. I think Mt Airy would be cheaper

West Philly/Penn: I actually used to make this commute and it wasn't so bad when the South St. bridge was functioning. Since itll be out for the next two years Chestnut/Walnut/Market St. bridges are all super-congested . . . total mightmare. The subway is an option, but you have to transfer at city hall, so depending on how far you live from the El its at least a 20 minute commute.

I recommend Center City, Fairmount, Graduate Hospital, Society Hill/the Geighborhood, Northern Libs and Fishtown. Center City and Fairmount can be a little steep, but the subway is right there, youll be at school in about 10 minutes. Grad-Hosp is a little further South reasonably priced, and has the same accesibility to the subway. Fishtown and Northern Libs are Northeast of Center City and are definately reasonably priced. The commute to school from either wood be a breeze by car.

Hope that helps

HERE I COME!!!!!!!!!
