Going abroad.

I'd venture your family friend who is a second year medical student in Ireland would be a great source of such information.

You're young now and bear in mind that doing your residency abroad, even if it sounds cool, may mean that you will not be eligible to work in the US. What if your parents became ill and you needed/wanted to return to the US? Would you be able to support yourself if you couldn't work as a physician? What if Ireland really wasn't as cool as you thought?

Having lived abroad myself I can promise you that it can be difficult; you will miss some things and the distance involved when you want/need to be home is difficult.

That said, its a wonderful experience and I would encourage anyone with interest to spend some time outside of the US. Training for a medical career with lifechanging repercussions is another story.

Otherwise, look in the Europe forum to find details about staying in Ireland for residency.

I know it would be hard and a huge change, but it's something I've always wanted. The distance would be hard at first, but I think I could do it. Who knows, I might change my mind eventually.

There are american citizens who trained in Ireland and have stayed in IRL for further training (residency) so it's not impossible. However, it's not an easy road
