Bryn Mawr 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thought I'd revamp this thread for this upcoming year. Just received my interview notification today 🙂thumbup🙂 and will be attending Interview Day on January 24th. I'm very excited/somewhat nervous. Anyone else going to be there?

For those current post-bacs and alums, I'd greatly appreciate any feedback that you could provide regarding what to expect on the day, what interview questions you were given, and any general tips you could provide. Thanks in advance!

Also, I talked with Leslie today (one of the two program coordinators) and asked her whether she knew what the acceptance rate is post-interview, but she couldn't offer any figures because BM doesn't keep those statistics. If anyone knowledge could shed some light on our chances, that would be great.

Good luck everyone!

congrats! feel free PM me if you have any specific questions

I sent in my application over the holidays and am waiting to hear back. Though the website says one should recieve an e-mail within a week, I'm going to try to be a little more patient since I feel their time off may be an exception to that rule.

Mind if I ask when you submitted and when you heard back?

Good luck!

Right now is a super busy time for the advisors, so they'll probably take a bit longer to respond. They've been busy writing committee letters and helping people apply for linkage. It was also the holiday plus that snowstorm, so just give it some time.

A Dean last year told me that BMC receives over 500 applicants for 70 spaces.
I do not however know how many they interview and how many of those are accepted.

Congrats on receiving an interview. I got in over the holidays and just sent in the check to hold my spot. Best of luck, and hopefully I'll see you in the summer/fall.

"they'll be interviewing 150 people. With 70-80 spaces, that means one would have a 50% chance of getting into the program, post-interview"

It's unlikely that everyone who receives an offer will matriculate, so they will likely make more than 70-80 offers.

I sent in my materials right before the holidays and heard back within a week, it was a very quick turnaround.

I got waitlisted. Not so optimistic I will be accepted in the end. Any advice for how I can beg and plead to get in/does anyone who is a current student know someone who was waitlisted and accepted. I'm pretty bummed out...

Any idea why you might have gotten moved to the waitlist? For example, if you know your grades and SAT were solid but lacked medical experience, an update with more recent experiences might help you. It would both let them know you're still interested and that you're addressing what they might have seen as a weak spot.

Were you invited to interview? If so, when are you going?

Hmm...I sent in my package at the beginning of December. I guess it took them to longer to decide on my case.

Hi - yes I actually have already gone through the interview process. However, I was surprised at the course schedule they showed me during the interview - they aim for students to finish within a year (with a full summer schedule) - and had me at 3 labs a semester... not sure if I like that. Waiting to hear back.

Pretty much everyone at Bryn Mawr (as well as Goucher/Scripps I believe) has 3 labs a semester for fall/spring plus an accelerated semester during the summer. It's definitely a lot of work, but everyone pulls through alive.

Good to know - that everyone makes it through - that's what I'm most nervous about - balancing that 3 lab coursework :\

Hi all! Just got accepted to the Bryn Mawr class of 2011-2012 today! Waiting for the admissions packet but am definitely matriculating and planning to start in May. Just wanted to say hi!

About turnaround, if anyone is interested, I submitted my application in December. A week and a half later, I was invited to interview and did so on January 10th. Just got accepted today (the 20th).

I can't wait to start! Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Best of luck to those applying!

I interviews on Jan 10th. It's a great day, very low-key and relaxed. There was a group of 10 applicants that day. You sit down for an information session and have chances to ask questions. They give you a ton of good info, then you meet with current students, sit in on a class, have lunch, and then do your personal interview. In the interview, just be ready to answer questions about why you want to do medicine, particularly if you are switching careers. Also be ready to talk about clinical or volunteer experiences you have had in medicine. They will also do an academic advising session where they look at your undergrad transcript to see what courses you need to take, etc. Everyone there is very nice, you will enjoy your day! Best of luck.

I created a facebook group for the next class. You can find it by searching for 'Bryn Mawr postbac 2011/2012' -- Hope to see many of you there!

Hi all!

I'm attending the 2011/12 program as well, starting in May. Very excited!

My personal experience:

Sent in my application on November 23. Got invited for an interview about a week later, and flew out for my interview day about a week after that, on Dec 7. I got my acceptance call on Dec 22, so for me it was almost exactly a month from mailing my application to getting accepted.

I'm really excited to get to know everyone, so don't hesitate to send me a msg and say hi!

Has anyone who applied after the winter break heard back about an interview? I know it's a busy time, but it'd be good to get a heads-up so I know when to start working up some anxiety!

Is anyone comfortable posting their stats (or messaging me with them)? I am very interested in Bryn Mawr (will be applying for class of 2012-2013) and I would like to know what the pool looks like. Thanks!

DrArete makes an excellent point below, though my username itself is not particularly subtle.

I was accepted before Christmas and sent in my deposit.

If you want to know my stats, PM me.

I won't publicly post them, since that would make me identifiable to BM (it seems logical that people with the main programs are aware of SDN, and search for any threads that mention their programs by name), and I like to say what I think without any filtering on here from time to time.

Also, if you are in and have decided to go, and want to get in touch with a future classmate, PM me.

Maybe we should make a FB group for our class, I think last year's did that. 👍

I made the fb group, you can search for it: Bryn Mawr Postbac 2011/2012

I applied middle of November, interviewed December 8th, accepted December 22nd. Sent in the deposit in early January! I'll begin in August! It was quick and I didn't have to go to the other interview I had lined up and waste the money on travel.

rtavila, I found the FB group and sent a request to be added. Thanks for creating it.

Congratulations and good luck to all of you! I was a member of the 2008-2009 class at BMC and really can't say enough good things about the program. Feel free to send any questions my way.

Best wishes,
Gator

My application arrived there on Monday morning, and is likely in the middle of a rather large pile at the moment. I have a good feeling about it, though. Hopefully I'll be joining everyone at Bryn Mawr this fall. :luck:

Some more questions for those familiar with the program:

Any ideas on what the numbers look like as of now? Is the class half full, three quarters? etc. If the class is comprised of about 70 students, about how many acceptances will they give out? Thanks.

In terms of waitlist, it is not the best of signs. I know someone who was put on hold last year and then wait-listed and eventually told the class was full. From my understanding they didn't take anyone off of it last year and I believe 2 years ago was the same story. It just depends where you are on it and whether or not anyone has last minute financial issues. Best of luck to you though. HES is supposed to be an excellent program as well.

Does anybody know how they contact you about whether or not you get an interview? Phone/E-mail/Regular mail?

Also after they call you how soon is the interview? Just wondering, as i will need to request vacation from work.

I sent in my application on Jan 25th and due to the weather and post office they did not actually receive it until Feb 2nd. So i am hoping they do not use the regular mail. Besides a phone call saying they did receive my application I have still yet to hear anything back. I am hoping to hear within the next week. I am just hoping i did not get my application in too late and the class has already be filled.

I was contacted via email for the interview.

I don't think anyone but the actual admissions committee is sure of the exact status of the 2011-2012 class, but applying as early in the cycle as possible is always optimal.

As for being invited for an interview, I believe email is frequently used.

Best of luck to the remainder of this season's candidates.

has anyone heard back from Bryn Mawr is the last week or so about getting interviews? Im sure they are probably a little slow at getting back right now since last week was the deadline but I guess i am just anxious.

Nope. They received my app last Monday. No word yet. I'd give it another week and a half.

Hey there admits!

Just got accepted and I had two quick questions:

1) Are you planning on living near campus? I'm considering getting a place in Philly and was wondering how much that would affect my opportunity to connect with the rest of the class, etc? I am planning on getting a car and driving to campus daily.

2) Also in terms of finances...how much is an estimated full year at BM (room and board included) is supposed to be? I have heard ~$40K but just wanted to see if anyone had this information as I can only find tuition information on their website. Trying to gauge how much I can expect to pay next year.

Thanks!

If connecting with the class is important to you, I highly suggest living close to campus. There are a few buildings a few minutes walk away that postbacs typically live. Postbacs who live in Philly typically have lived there before they started the program or have a good set of friends there already. I would not suggest moving there if you are new to the area however.

You can also probably expect to pay around $600-800/mo in rent around here.

You can call the financial aid office at Bryn Mawr to get an exact number for tuition. It changes from year to year and they also may tell you about federal loan options.

I was rejected outright, so I called to get some feedback. I was told that the first thing they do is look at high school grades. Next, they look at WHERE you went to college. Also, they told me that when applying "late in the process," applicants needed to be "nearly perfect." I got my app in before the priority deadline, but I guess that wasn't early enough.

I was dead in the water before they even made it to any positive aspects of my application. I graduated high school 10 years ago, and I have been going to a state university for the past 4 years. It didn't matter that I had a 3.9 in those 4 years. It didn't matter that I have an extensive and diverse history of experience in medical environments, including my current full-time job. All that mattered was that I didn't have great grades as a teenager, and that my undergraduate degree isn't from a famous school. I guess I can't fault them for being so meticulous, since they really limit the number of people they accept, but it seems like they are approaching it backwards.

I'm not taking it personally, in the sense that I hold some sort of grudge or bitterness against them. I am disappointed, of course, but I actually appreciate their forthright response, since most schools wouldn't own up to their actual admissions criteria. I do, however, find it a strange and possibly misguided starting evaluation point. It is also a bit odd to hold applicants to higher standards midway through the admissions process than in the beginning. What is the purpose of including a "priority deadline" (not the hard deadline) if that is the case? Alas, live and learn 🙂
