So a few months ago I asked in the WAMC forums about how necessary a committee letter is. http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=887798 The gist of it is that some schools will accept nothing less and some schools don't even care and you need to just ask them individually to know. Yesterday, I emailed roughly 30 schools that I am interested in about their requirements. Since the people on the thread were so helpful to me and I was asked to update when I can, here is my update. I hope it helps people who are also in my situation (detailed in the linked thread).
University of Colorado - "This will have no impact on your application. Many of our applicants do not have a committee letter."
UC Davis - Most likely not. "... in most instances, the Cmte. does not know whether a school has a letter service or provides a Cmte. letter from a particular school. I hope this answers your question."
University of Maryland - This letter is required unless you send a written explanation of why you didn't get it.
Albany - It seems like they let you choose between committee letter and individual ones but their secondary has a box that allows you to explain your lack of a letter. Kind of an ambiguous answer on this one. 😕
OHSU - No preference.
Boston University - No preference, but there is a space on the secondary to explain the lack of a letter.
University of Pittsburgh - No preference.
Creighton - No preference.
St. Louis University - No preference.
Northwestern - They prefer a committee letter but in my situation (detailed in the thread), the individual letters are fine.
Case Western - No preference.
Rush - No preference.
Loyola - No preference.
George Washington University - No preference.
Cornell - "We will add this note to your file so that the reviewers know the reason." 😱
Perhaps I shouldn't have signed my email with my first and last name.
Warren Alpert (Brown) - No preference.
Wright - No preference.
University of Cincinnati - No preference.
Dartmouth - "If you are not eligible for a committee letter from your school, we will be happy to give full consideration to individual letters instead."
I'm still waiting to hear from a couple schools. I'll update this as I get more information.
Interestingly, UC Davis says that most schools don't even know if a certain school has a committee. I go to a small insignificant state school so I guess I can just slip by under their assumption that my school doesn't have one... Who knows.
Now, the question is...Are these people telling the truth or do they just want more income in the form of secondary fees? 😱.
