Ok, I know what I want for christmas...some ativan to forget about my interview, it's on Jan 5th at UNM.
And I have done nothing for it. I'll complete my secondary today after I get paid. And hoping to buy my new suit etc after christmass. I'm just trying to go into the interview relaxed. I'm actually decided to stop preparing (other than reading these boards, and heck, I might review the krebs cycle 🙂), and just be myself, cause the truth is always refreshing.

So please people, just use this thread to gripe, be neurotic, whatever, and the rest of us will try our best to be supportive.

ps. crap...I have to learn to walk in heels

i love heels 😍 😍 they make your legs look super sexy 😀 If you don't already have a pair, make sure you buy something comfy, not necessarily stylish. I saw too many interviewees wear those pointy shoes and complaing about how much their feet were in pain

I can't wait til those stupid pointy shoes go out of style. I was at some interviews where the *guys* were complaining about their shoes, I was like shaddup you have no right to bitch. As future doctors we should boycott uncomfortable shoes for women. I just finished reading this book called "Complications" written by a surgical resident at MGH, and he talked about a case of a 23 year old girl who got a sore from some cruddy sandals. It got infected and spread up her leg and ended up being necrotizing fasciitis, or flesh-eating bacteria, and they almost had to amputate. It was freaky.

lol. I was so nervous I was going to break/sprain my ankle at my first interview this year. I never wear heels because I have no ligaments in my ankles anymore (compliments of 15 years of gymnastics) to provide stability when I walk - so I'm always petrified that something's going to happen when I have to walk in heels. I actually have to wear an ankle brace when I work out now because I sprained my ankle like 3 weeks in a row while hiking. Thankfully I've gotten through my interviews (so far) without anything happening. Why do we have to wear those aweful things anyway? They're horrible for your body.

I swear, they are the ugliest shoes i have ever seen. I don't understand why girls wear them.

How does that work? So it's hard to keep your balance in heels? Or your ankles are just wobbly? I used to wear an ankle brace for races, but that's because I tended to twist my ankles while running. Is that what happens to you too?

 My coach used to yell at us everytime she saw us in heels. They are horrible for your body. But they make you feel feminie 🙂

Yea, that was a good story. I liked how he stuck with his intuition and insisted on getting the girl to do the biopsy, even though she didn't want it to scar and the chances of ANYONE having necrotizing fascitis is slim. One of the docs told Gawande, "when you hear hoofs in texas, think horses, not zebra," or something like that. But Gawande showed them who's boss!

i love pointy shoes 🙂

i got into them when i was corporate for a few years. they make a suit look much more polished than square-toed, chunky-heeled shoes. and surprisingly, they've given me less blisters than square toed shoes have.

any heeled shoes will hurt after a long walk, regardless of whether they're square toed or pointy-toed. it's the pressure from your weight on a small area (the ball of your foot). it's a sad fact, but as someone else mentioned - they do make your legs look damn good.

in terms of comfortable stylish shoes, i strongly suggest the brand "beautifeel." they are from israel and can be purchased at the walking store. they are a little pricey ($140 ish) but totally worth it and blow any other "comfortable" shoe out of the water with the exception of the taryn rose brand which costs like $200+ even at DSW. what's great about both these brands is that they are stylish yet very comfortable.

regarding the pointy toes, ie witch shoes, I agree that I don't like them and never thought I'd own a pair. however, i saw some really cute boots that had the pointy toes and tried them on. they feel really sexy when you wear them so i think that is part of the appeal. my boyfriend hates them though....i doubt i'd buy any more and will stick to my feminine rounded shoes

Yeah, it's harder for me to keep my balance and my ankles are wobbly because the only thing keeping my ankle in place are my muscles. And I definitely tend to turn my ankle more often when I hike than when I run because I hike on uneven surfaces which of course is difficult for me. On flat surfaces with flat shoes I tend to do ok - which I what I run on. 🙂

And as much as I hate to admit it, those horrible shoes do make you feel sexy. 👍

um.... why wear heels?? i promise you... your interviewers are not looking at your choice of footwear. of course, i think skirt suits look silly and secretary-like anyway, so i guess i don't have to worry about how my legs look. i wear a pantsuit with comfy flat clarks... and i've gotten compliments on them. why torture yourself? you have enough to worry about at interviews... and some of those tours are freakin' long...

I think pointy shoes are fine, just not on my feet. I think they make my feet look weird. But I do agree that high heels makes your legs look longer, make you appear slimmer, and improves your posture (provided that the heels are not so high and you can still walk in them). But I guess if you're already tall and skinny, it doesn't matter what you wear, or how you wear it, and you'll still look excellent. But I am short and stout. I need all the help I can get. 😉

My heart bleeds... 🙁 I LOVE those shoes! I think they're pretty and they make me feel super sexy 👍 But, yes, they're not comfortable...

mmmm ativan is the best 🙂
i love heels too esp pointy toed stilletos mmmmm

ok, so does anyone else having an upcoming interview, or are we just going to b1tch about heels?

Which, btw, I'm a major tomboy, but the hubby always gets excited when I actually have to go buy feminine type clothes, and I said I'd buy the skirt suit and all the stupid little extras. But that might change with whatever shoes I'll have to wear since it'll probably be snowing, or at least there will be snow on the ground, which reminds me why I really don't care about fashion in the first place. 😀

Other than that, I'm going to ask the docs I work with for some vit. A (ativan) or at least some resterill (sp?) for the night before, but then again, etoh also works well if it's the right stuff 🙂

Try pants suits instead of skirt suits for warmth. this way you can wear long underwear underneath. that's what i do. and who says you can't wear heels in the snow? stilettos look so pretty peeping out from under pinstripe pants. and you can use the heels like ice picks!!

I sprained my ankle very bad couple of months ago and now I can't wear anything except flats 😡

those pointy shoes are really ugly. i've never worn a pair in my life and never will. i think rounded or anything open toe is usually sexy, but those pointy ones just look funny. and on an interview i don't think you should wear pointy shoes. they are too trendy. i thought you were supposed to wear the type of shoes your mom wears... like pumps or basic flats.

They make your feet look big. They have to be longer to accomodate the point. The main purpose of them, IMO, is to create a style so extreme that when it becomes demode and rounded toe is back in it will be so obviously 'out' that everyone will have to go out and buy a whole new shoe wardrobe. We are such pawns of the fashion industry, sigh. Yea and what is with the stilettos at interviews. We are not going clubbing here ladies, this is medical school admissions. Or do people think looking hot/feminine is a possible advantage? I have also noticed some girls with makeup on and their hair all flowy and blowdried like they are primped for a date. I think it looks weird, but maybe it helps? I have been trying to go conservative -- hair up, no dangly earrings, nothing too clingy, etc.

I don't think there is any one fashion that fits everyone. If pointy shoes or stilleto shoes work with you, so be it. If flats are your thing, that's works as well. As long as you look professional and comfortable in what you're wearing, I don't think adcoms really care. There was a girl in a green skirt suit with green pumps at my interview that somehow she pulled it off and didn't look out of place. *shrugs* Hair up, hair down, skirt suit, pants suit, who cares.....luckily for us, this isn't a fashion contest. 🙂 We're all expected to look virutally the same.

I used to wear 3-4" high heels ALL the time - even run in them down the city sidewalks. Loved 'em. Pointy shoes were perfect for me - my toes naturally taper with my little toe being really short and naturally curled under. Then I broke my ankle and ripped the livin' crap out of two of the ligaments. No more high heels for me. Can't stand in heels for more than 5 minutes anymore. I found some cute flats, but I may suck it up for a 1" heel for interviews (if they're otherwise superduper comfortable).

Sorry girls I had to chime in and remind everyone that this thread isn't only about shoes 😀 although I do think that either pointy or square shoes make you look sexy (all in your own special way 😉 ) Anyway, its interesting that rachmoninov3 talked about brushing up on the kreb cycle. I had the craziest question at my interview this past monday. Are you ready for it? Here it comes...... Nearly there 😛 jk "What is ox-phos" mind you those are the words he used not what is oxidative phosphorilation but ox-phos, how weird is that. Anyway, just goes to show you, you never know what they'll throw at you🙂 I hope everyone has a great break and good look on the crucial decision "heals or not? stoletos (spelling?) or not? square or pointy?" OMG can life decisions possibly get any tougher, I mean I can't imagine any possible sittuation as a physician that would be even remotely as difficult to deal with  jk (In the famous words of the dog with a cigar from the Conan O'Brian show "I kid, I kid."
Take it easy.

IM SORRY FOR, 2004..................HOpe 2005 is tha bomb!!!!!!!!! ADCOMS, Keep those interviews coming!!!!!!!!!! 👍 :luck: 😍

yeah i was so glad to get through my interview b/c I was only 8 weeks post-op on my ankle (compliments of 17 years of gymnastics), and of course it was at rush where you have to walk up and down the stairs a million times for the tour....but i survived without completely humiliating myself....so far
