Hey guys i've started to collect teeth and my wisdom teeth (freshly extracted) were the first 4 in the jar of 1:10 bleach diluted with double distilled H20. Anyway this is my question. After about one week I pulled out a tooth and it seemed VERY dry and brittle looking. Is this normally what 1:10 bleach does to teeth?

MCG recommended 1:10 bleach but i'm wondering if formalin offers any advantages....

I have access to both.

^^^words cannot describe how creepy it is that you're using your OWN teeth to start your tooth collection

i'm just ribbing you, i'm just envious that you're 4 teeth ahead of my collection! i'll be dropping off jars at my dentist when i go home for christmas  i've heard that 1:10 bleach is the best, but you might want to call and ask the school--different schools do use different solutions/protocols.

You ONLY want to keep the teeth in the bleach solution for like 24 hours! After that, put them in 1:1 mouthwash (listerine, etc) to water. They will keep in the mouthwash solution for a long time, but if you let them sit in bleach for too long, the apicies of the roots will open up and you won't be able to use them for endo!!

Best of luck,
-Mike

10% bleach is the way most places go; it's readily available & inexpensive. Yeah, over time the teeth do dry out and get a little more brittle, but they'll still be fine to use for operative or whatever you're going to need them for.

And, I'm with vandy; starting a tooth collection with four of your own is a little creepy. 😉
