Go find a library with a big whiteboard and just practice, practice, practice. And then practice some more. You'll get it eventually.

if you completely don't know the answer to something asking 'propose a synthesis for ...' just say that you plan to outsource production so that you can reap higher margins!

As an orgo tutor I tell my students to follow basic strategies throughout mechanisms. You can predict mechanisms based on knowledge of the reaction. For instance If it is acid catalyzed always draw acid as AH or A: on the side of intermediates and make sure you regenerate it at the end. What were your leaving groups and if it was water does it participate in the reaction down the line, are questions to ask yourself. Also practice makes perfect draw this mechanism over and over until you see it in your sleep.

Ugh we had to do something like that. It was the last question on the last exam. I think I got to step 9 or 10 and just penciled in a carbon connecting to a smiley face

lmao that's hilarious.

My Ochem II professor chewed a guy out last week for putting a smiley face in the double bonded oxygen of a nitrile group when he put a synthesis on the white board. Kind of came out of nowhere. 😵

I had something like this on my final, one of the solvents I wrote in as "magic fairy dust." It was an Extra Credit question anyway so no harm no foul

People need to relax and have fun with science. Plus, when you get to that burnt out stage of studying people tend ot get a bit whacky.

Anhydrous magic fairy dust would not be a good solvent.

@NorthernMav hahaha no it certainly would not be. My professors rebuttal was "wait to use that until organic III"
