Wow, that clinicical work is very good, especially since you’ve been committed to it for a year, as of so far! If you’re looking to volunteer elsewhere, I’d say pick a non-clinical volunteering opportunity that targets an age-group you are looking to work with, or are un-accustomed to serving to (children or elderly). Good luck!

Edit: I meant non-clinical**

Hi there,

I’m looking for an evaluation of my current extra curriculars before applying in June.

One of my volunteering projects is coming to end since I’m moving several hours away, but I’d like to get involved in the community that I’m moving to. It’s a smaller town and I’m having trouble finding opportunities but I’m sure I’ll find something.

I currently have done the following:
~2000 hours of medical scribing in the ER
~1 year of 4 hours/week volunteering in a low-income clinic helping patients receive their meds/have access to a health provider.
~2 years of paid, private industry research in an analytical chemistry lab with no publications but one presentation poster.
~6 months over two summers of volunteer cello lessons to high school and middle school students.
~20 hours shadowing a surgeon and pathologist
~100 hours volunteering at a hospital, greeting and escorting patients, helping with small clerical duties.

I’m currently a first term post-bacc student for remedial GPA, not only do I find volunteering fulfilling, I’d like to apply with a strong ECs. I’m applying mostly DO. I have a DO letter and worked with DOs, but I have not shadowed any DOs.

My question is: is there something else in particular I should focus on and add based on these ECs? For example, should I be looking for more research vs non-clinical volunteer opportunities?

Thanks
I think it would be nice to add 20-30 more shadowing hours of an office-based primary care doctor, ideally a DO. Your clinical experience is already very strong. Your laboratory experience is sufficient. More nonclinical volunteering, preferentially serving those in need would be good to see, though.

Yeah the only thing I would recommend would be shadowing a primary care doc as 65% of DO docs go into that field. You can also throw in some non-clinical volunteering, but other than that your non-academic application is extremely good! As long as your GPA is 3.5+ and MCAT 500+ I don't see you having ANY troubles getting in with a June application. Good luck

Im going to second that...
1. Your ECs are strong.
2. The first thing that came to mind that would truly round your ECs out would be 20-30 hours of primary care shadowing. Extra kudos if its a DO.
GL next cycle!
