If your MCAT is at least 505 you could receive interviews at some of the newer DO schools. Post your score here when available. It is important that your sGPA is above 3.0 otherwise you will be screened out at many schools. You may need to do another year of DIY post bacc classes and that would increase your chances with a higher GPA..

thanks. i won't apply until my sgpa is above screening cutoffs. do you think it is reasonable to apply this cycle but continue to take postbacc classes during the cycle so in the case that I don't receive any interviews, I'll at least have been working on my gpa? my MCAT is scheduled for 5/31 so i'll update then.

thanks again
It depends on your MCAT score. It is certainly a good idea to continue to take additional postbacc courses in case you are not accepted if you apply this year.

Agree 100% with the always wise Faha.

@camoixu- tried sending you a DM, but perhaps your settings aren’t allowing you to accept messages?

When I applied with a 510 and around 3.0 gpas I got a few interviews from newer schools. One interviewer said my MCAT was “stellar.” Ended up waitlisted and had to reapply. You may have better luck—a 510 MCAT will definitely garner interest. Ultimately I had to push my gpas above 3.25 and I scored higher on a retake since my 510 effectively expired. My advice would be apply broadly now but also continue taking post-bacc courses in the event of a reapplication. Good luck to you!

You are fine to apply this month with your MCAT of 510 and your new GPA numbers. I suggest all these schools:
Western (Oregon)
ICOM
BCOM
UIWSOM
ACOM
ARCOM
NYIT-Arkansas
UP-KYCOM
WVSOM
VCOM (all 3 schools)
MU-COM
PCOM Georgia and South Georgia
LECOM (all schools)
LMU-DCOM

Great, thanks for the list. Do you have any reservations against applying to PNWCOM in Washington? I have the fee assistance program and I’m looking to apply to as many programs as would be reasonable.
You can apply there also.

With VCOM, I believe there are four campuses now? Also, they seem to have a minimum gpa of 3.2 - do you know if that is a hard cutoff? Should I apply to all four or should I remove these.

thanks again

Email them. I took the time to email every school I plan on applying to inquiring about GPA cutoffs. Good luck.

Hello,

I'm hoping to receive some constructive advice. I'm a non-trad student trying to recover from a dismal ugrad gpa, I graduated in 2015 after a poor performance. I fixed the issues that I had in undergrad and enrolled in a DIY post-bacc which has given me a strong upward trend. I'm hoping to apply to DO this summer but I'm not sure if it's realistic. My question is - what else should I do to show reinvention and should I even think about applying this summer? My MCAT has expired, too, but was a 512 when I took it in 2015. I now realize I shouldn't have taken it without having done GPA repair, but I'll need to retake it and I expect to perform better given my recent two practice tests. Anyway,

ugrad GPA: 2.9
ugrad sGPA 2.7

post-bacc so far over 40 credit hours (3 quarters per academic year, I'm about to begin the third quarter)
4.0 cgpa and 4.0 scgpa, all science except one psychology course and one stats course.

combined cgpa is 3.04 and sgpa is 2.92

courses taken fall 2018:
(class credits grade)
Human Anatomy and Physiology I (BI 301) 4 A
Biochemistry (CH 350) 4 A
Chemistry of Nutrition (CH 250) 4 A
Intro Statistics and Probability (STAT 241) 4 A
Psychology as a Natural Science (PSY 201) 4 A

winter 2019:

Neurophysiology (BI 462) 4 A
Evolution (BI 358) 4 A
Genetics (BI 341) 4 A
Human Anatomy and Physiology II (BI 302) 4 A
Organismal Physiology (BI 320) 4 A

spring 2019:
will take
Virology (BI 421)
Pathogenic Bacteriology (BI 486)
Human Anatomy and Physiology III (BI 303)
Mammalian Physiology (BI 417)

gpa at this point with another 4.0 in spring would
3.10 cgpa
3.01 sgpa

ECs:
~2600 hours of medical scribing in the ER over 2.5 years. I was also a scribe trainer. I have a strong DO LOR.
~1.5 years of 4 hours/week volunteering in a low-income pharmacy helping patients receive their meds/have access to a health provider. Not sure if this is clinical or non-clinical, frankly.
~2 years of paid, private industry research in an analytical chemistry lab with no publications.
~6 months over two summers of volunteer cello lessons to high school and middle school students.
~20 hours shadowing a surgeon and pathologist, both MD.
~160 hours volunteering at a hospital, greeting and escorting patients, helping with small clerical duties, over one year.

Should I look to defer for another year and take more DIY post-bacc classes or consider an SMP, or am I on track to demonstrate reinvention by summer if I can replicate my MCAT performance?

Thanks
My MCAT score came back as 510. Should I apply this cycle?
@Faha @Goro

Beautiful work @camoixu! That upward trend/reinvention looks great. I'm hoping the best for you.

Due to some unforeseen financial issues that are only just recently resolved, I wouldn't be able to apply for for most of my school list until mid September... say, 1-2 weeks from now. My application is already verified since I applied to a throw away school. My question is, if I pre-write secondaries now, is it still OK to apply this cycle given my stats, or am I late? I realize that after Thanksgiving is late for everyone, but I'm wondering for my stats in particular if I should hold off and wait until next year since I don't identify as a very competitive candidate.
@Faha @Goro

Remind me, are you applying DO or MD or Both?

Goro says sept 3rd for MD and thankgiving for DO.

I planned to take my MCAT in September and apply in October so you already having your MCAT is golden.

Applying anytime in September is not late for DO schools.
