the way i see it, your dat scores look pretty damn solid the way they are...

and if uop is going to be that number-oriented and inflexible, then i'd say screw it and just don't apply there...do you really want to go to a school where they consider you as a number, and not as a candidate?

to me, there's more to you than just a few numbers on the DAT...and if they're unwilling to consider you as an applicant as a whole, then i don't think it's even worth your time...

Ditto to above. With your current DAT there will be many other schools who would love to have you. Having said that, when i called and asked for the DAT scores they like to see, they said "nothin less than 20 accross."

You are a great candidate for many schools as everyone has been saying. You will get into a dental school, but honestly I think your chances at UOP might be pretty slim if that is what they said.

UOP has a couple of trends that you need to be aware of if you are dead set on going there:

Their students have really high DAT scores. They also like students with high GPAs, but if you search you will see that there are a lot of high scorers going there. They also like students with high PAT, which you have. If they say you need higher than a 17 then they mean it. While you may get into several other schools, you would have to retake the DAT to go to UOP.

I am sure they have had exceptions in the past, but unless you have something earth-shattering to bring to the table you will have to just retake and get that 17 if you want to go there.

see teh thing is is that the 3 year thing is really somethign im interested in...but im a hometown kinda guy and i've lived in chicago my whole life so my first choice is UIC---hopefully i can get in there--but if it wasnt for uic i was thinking then maybe i can be done in 3 years--but since you guys are right i dont want to be a number i want to goto a school that actually cares about me, you know---so i'll just apply around and see what goes down.
thanks again for the input
i appreciate it

that means your numbers dont' cut it at the school, save your money. At least they were straight up instead of being vague and milking you for app fees.

test

UOP is a unique school the people I know that are there swear it is God's gift to dental students. From the knowledge I have of it I cannot disagree. In answer to your question though keep this in mind. The school has a dean of admisssions named Dr. Yarborough, and his daughter wanted to enter the school and recieved an 18 on the DAT and they made her retake the DAT until she got a twenty overall with no scores less than an 18. I got a 15 in the same section with an overall of 21 and they told me that was the only thing that kept me out last year, and so now I am retaking the test in hopes of an acceptance this year.

No one I know feels like a number at UOP. Once you make the cut (i.e. get an interview) you are treated like gold. So, if you are very interested in Pacific, then you need to improve that QR score. But, I'd say with your scores, there are many other schools that will accept you, and maybe it's not worth it to retake that monster of a test.

Pacific recieved nearly 2600 applications last year. Undoubtedly, one of the most popular schools last year. They have the luxury of picking whatever students they want. Pacific is notorious for rejecting students with AA score above 23 (and all of the individual sections are 20+). They DO look at the whole application. Ask Typo (a long-time member of SDN). If you aren't well-rounded, don't score well on the DAT, achieve a high GPA, and get lucky, then you'll be going to school somewhere else--at another fine dental school.

Javadi, when u are referring to the students rejected despite having a 23+ DAT, are u implying that the main reason that happened was their having a low gpa?

Not really. Not unless a 3.3 is too low to be competitive. Many students aren't interviewed even though they are very competitive on paper. Mainly, the adcom is looking for traits/qualities in the essays submitted by students.

The UOP cut-off is not unique to that school at all. Many schools will not be as public about it, but they have a threshold you are expected to be above. A 16 is pretty low. True, your other scores are pretty solid, but I would take the test again and seek to do better. You want to maximize your chances at every school.

All that being said, I don't think because UOP has a cut-off, they are looking at you as a number. In terms of choosing who to interview, schools focus primarily on DAT scores and GPA. Yes, these are numbers, but there is no better way for them to judge you as a candidate. Schools will, of course, consider your background, activities, statement, etc. Yet, whether right or wrong, your "numbers" are what matter most. When you get to the interview stage, schools will look more closely at your whole file.

Good luck!
