19 AA on DAT what are my chances??

Hey so I just took my DAT today 1/5/17 and my scores were:

PAT: 24
QR: 16 (idk wtf happened I ran outta time)
RC:18
Bio: 19
GC: 20
OC: 23
TS: 20
AA: 19 🙁

My gpa is a 3.84 currently I still have 2 more quarters left and I think my science is around 3.7ish not sure. But i just totally messed up on QR and I wanted to go to UW. I have clinical hours and I'm a registered dental assistant although I haven't had time to practice with school and I'm in a volunteering internship.. are my scores going to hurt me? Should I retake? Or should I just get a lot of extracurricular to make me stand out? Help.

Your GPA is great, just focus on doing well on the DAT. Treat the test as if it's your only testing chance, do not go in with the mentality that you can take it again if things do not go well.

Go buy the DAT Destroyer and make sure you understand all of the solutions. Assuming you're a competent student, there's no reason you can't score a 22AA/22TS or higher.

Accepted on December 1st.

Focus on getting tons of EC hours, a perfect PS, and excellent interview skills.

Random question: You have a good GPA. What happened on the DAT? Did you not study enough or? Im just curious.

Yeah, I got a 21 in QR section but I was getting like 16's on my practices till i realized its better to just mark any question that i know i have to think about how to do it and then come back. I can do all the problems just fine but I always got wrecked for time. Your GPA is exceptional though and a 19 AA is the average for most dental schools acceptances so dont worry about it much. Just check if they will accept a 16 score in QR (some schools cut off at minimum 17's, just have to look at their websites or call them)

If you live in washington you should be able to pull interviews there. If you dont, and arent Wiche, I'd suggest looking elsewhere for schools since they are pretty much only Washington students there or Wiche.

Yup. I know more people accepted with 19AA than I do with 20-24AA. Why? I don't know. All I can say is what I've observed personally. Just remember that SDN is a VERY small sample size of the entire dental pool of applicants that matriculate.

Yes, listen to @x0jessmariex3 and do not retake. I've seen people have decent scores only to retake and do worse. That'll hurt you by far more than the QR which is a section that isn't regarded that high to begin with.

Most schools don't care at all about QR. The Canadian DAT doesn't even have a math portion and plenty of Canadians are accepted here with their cDAT!

I had a 3.6 gpa with a 20AA/21TS and didn't get into UW, but I also didn't think I did too well in my interview. I knew people in the school that had a 16 in QR and so I don't think that will keep you back.
 
I do live in Washington which is nice. Do you know what schools cut you off at 17?

That's a relief! But those are really good scores. I was aiming for a 20 AA but I had a very distressed morning haha (my car broke down 5 miles from my test center) idk what happened but are you from Washington as well?

Yeah, I am from WA. Attended UW and was in the honors program.

Got into all I interviewed at except MOSDOH which was the school I was least impressed with and thought 100 would accept me. Funny how that works out.
 
I retook a 19 AA because my GPA was lower, but since yours is well above average, I wouldn't suggest a retake for you *unless* schools you are applying to have cutoffs of 17 in a given section (in which case, QR would be problematic). I scored a 17 QR both times, so you also run the risk of not improving despite studying more (although I came out with a 21 AA on the retake, and felt more confident applying with it). In the end, go with your gut, but I wouldn't be very concerned & your PAT is bomb.
 
your DAT score is good. dont retake it. i have learned from this cycle that high DAT/gpa doesn't matter, only the interview matters. trust me on this. a lot of students with AA 18 or 19 have got into really good dental schools because they did well in interview. So dont worry about your score. You have 100% of getting into dental school if you do well in interview. only the performance in interview matters.

Do you know if they make any exceptions for a 17 cut off for schools that do have those requirements? Who do I talk to to ask that usually?

90% of the times the QR is not included in the 17 cut off and when there's a cut off for qr is usually lower 15-16

OHSU: 15 in each section.
Tufts considers competitive a score of 19-20 on the four important sections. Minimum: 16AA 17PAT 17RC and 16TS. Nothing about "all other sections" or QR
UMKC prefers 17+ AA but minimum is 16AA. No info about other sections.
UCONN "For initial review you should have a science GPA of 3.2 and a DAT total science score of 19.
PENN: no cut offs
Rutgers: no cut offs
SIU: no cut offs
Temple: 18AA
Boston: "We do not have GPA or DAT cutoffs. All applicants are encouraged to apply. The Admissions Committee will review all applications"

One trend I noticed is that RC and PAT are regarded higher than everything else.

This has mostly been addressed by above users fortunately, but if UW doesn't list it directly on the admissions requirement list (looks like they only display averages), you can call and ask the number listed on their admissions page. 🙂

Most schools don't care much about QR, as stated by others, but it doesn't hurt to be certain. My school lists a 15 cutoff in every section (with no exceptions that I personally know of), yet the average acceptance is a 21 AA, so they understand that we all have strengths and weaknesses that contribute to the overall. Your ECs matched with your above average GPA and at least mostly average DAT will make for a pretty competitive holistic app, especially for in state and private schools, but apply early. ^.^

And if I can get multiple invites with an 18 PAT / 17 QR (TWICE) and only 3.6-something GPA, I'm pretty confident you'll be fine if you interview well!

Was your AA pretty good though? because if those were your only low scores that makes sense to me but if your score was similar to mine than that definitely gives me some hope 🙂

Wow this was really helpful! Thank you so much. I kind of wanted to apply to pittsburg as well but that probably won't be happeneing if they need a 17 in all sections. oh well. Do you think its worth even applying there?

I did have a 21 AA (average for UF, where I'll be attending) but still, 18 PAT is on the low side ( 21 is average for them). Plus your TS is a 20, which is good. Definitely have hope!

Just really look into what UW likes from its applicants and try your best to be well-rounded with plenty of community service, hopefully some accolades, etc. Applying ASAP worked greatly in my favor, too! Sometimes just hitting average is enough. If you're in state and live a reasonable distance from the school, go to their pre-dental day if they have one, because some schools care about whether or not you showed interest before application season. My scores were worse than yours and I was accepted to Memphis. I was really worried about my QR score. I had a 3.8 GPA ( which I think made a huge difference). Your scores are great talk to admissions at schools and make sure they don't have cut off points. Your scores will for sure get you into Memphis UTHSC.

QR 14 ( important to remember a lot of school overlook bad QR scores)
