Exactly how important are 1st and 2nd year grades when applying for a PM&R residency? Could someone in the bottom 25% of their class have a shot at landing a residency position?
Check out the NRMP document Program Director Survey. You will find that with regards to PM&R, honoring basic sciences is the least important factor considered, with more importance going to factors like perceived interest in the field, board scores, deans letter, personal statement, etc. We tend to look at the application package as a whole, not just one area in particular. If someone had great LORs and grades during their PM&R clinical rotations, we probably would be willing to overlook a barely passing grade in microbiology.
Were not that competitive a specialty (yet). As long as you didnt fail everything, and you are somewhat personable, somebody somewhere will take you.
