1st author paper vs. paper at conference

they are viewed as good

They are both very impressive, but peer-reviewed journals trump conference papers.

Would 1st author paper still look good for research-heavy schools if the Impact Factor of the journal wasn't that high, but the journal is peer-reviewed? As a follow-up, are sole 1st author papers viewed more favorably or around the same?
