From experience, would you recommend a 1st year D student to live by themselves or get roommates? I tend to do better studying my myself, then meeting up and reviewing with a group. Just don't want distractions or getting stuck with a bad roommate- Im heading to school this summer and don't know of anyone of whom I's want to room with.

There's an edit button 😉

I'm starting school in August, and I think I'm going to try to get a roommate or two. I go to a big state undergrad, and while in a certain sense I'm looking forward to escaping from the intensity of my sprawling social network, I definitely don't want to be consumed by the quiet. I guess if you depend upon your home for studying you may want to especially consider living by yourself, but otherwise you can always find other places to study. I enjoy having someone to hang out with and talk to when I'm home, so flying solo would be a little lonely for me.

I go to a a huge state undergrad school as well, and live in a sorority house now (excited to get out of a house full of girls), so see what you mean that it would kind of be a shock to go right to quiet. I will keep your opinion in consideration when I start to look at places. Thanks and good luck to you!

I'm like you in that I am far more productive when studying solo and find it beneficial to meet up with a group later to review specific topics. Keep in mind though that having a roommate or two will drastically bring down your cost of living expenses (ie. rent, utilities, cable/phone/internet, food)... this could potentially amount to a lot of money after 4 years. I just recently got married, so having roommates is out of the question for us... we'll be paying over $2K/month. If you can afford it, then by all means do it because you will save a lot of money in the long run... just make sure to take everything into consideration so you're not regretting your decisions post-graduation

i think having roommates is a hit or miss type of thing if you don't know the person

you could get great roommates or get people that you can't get along with.

my plan before i moved was to live by myself for the 1st year and get to know my classmates. then i would try to find someone that was also looking for a roommate the following yr

remember that if you find a classmate to be roommates with, you'll have to see that person almost all the time at school and home.

could be a good or bad thing depending on your luck

Like dl, I'm going solo my first year, and then look to see if there is a classmate in my year or upper years to room with the following year. I realize I would save a ton by having a roommate, but getting a stranger as a roommate is a hit or miss thing. I figured I'm better off biting the bullet for one year with more expense, and then having a roommate for the next three.

dl and Wilson, you both make a great point, and I will strongly consider it.

I am definitely considering doing the solo thing for the 1st year. I think it's a great idea to feel out the class first and see who you'd like to room/live with for future years. I appreciate all your advice and thanks!

i'm living in one of the dental fraternity houses on campus...with 19 roommates (mostly upper classman), and a dental lab in the basement 🙂
