Do I write another PS for internship programs, or will the PS for categorical PM&R programs suffice?

If I do write 2 PSs, what do I tell the internship programs why Im applying to their program for PGY-1?

Thanks!

Ive been told to just add a few lines to a paragraph stating why you want an internship in _____ (ie prelim surg/med/TY) for the intern yr program of your choice. Its cool to just tell them you want to go into PM&R, they should all know youre there to suffer for a year before reaching the promised land 😀

I'm planning on using my original PS for PM&R for TY and Prelim. Saves me time, and TY and Prelim programs obviously know you are moving on after fulfilling that year.

Just my .02

my 2 cents is to write a separate statement for prelim/ty programs, the audience is different so the statement is different. they will care less why you have decided to go into PM&R then why you are applying to their program. you might want discuss why a strong background in general medicine is important to PM&R and you are eager to learn as much as possible as a foundation for managing inpatients and basic medical issues in your future patients. if you take your audience seriously, they will feel you will take your prelim year seriously, and then they will be more likely to take your application seriously. 🙂 don't forget you are competing against anesthesia, radiology, and other competetive specialities for these prelim spots.

50-50. Use the PM&R PS, but add things specific to the intership if you can.

Just add 1-2 sentences to your rehab PS stating how a year in IM/TY will provide you with a strong clinical foundation as you pursue a career in PM&R. You’re not primarily interested in IM, and the prelims understand this.

where shall I put these sentences?
at the begining and the end.
I just have a hard time to put them in.

I already sent out my apps last week and just attached the PMR PS for pre-lim. Does it matter if you are competing with other specialties for pre-lim? I didn't think so? Also, is it really detrimental that I didn't add anything about pre-lim IM in my statement?

when i applied, some of the transitional and prelim programs were more competitive than PM&R residencies because you are competing with derm, rads, anesthesia, etc. Generally the more cush the more competitive. if u r looking into some of the more highly sought after intern year programs, might want to consider "tailoring" the PS for those programs.

Silly question, but can we do a surgery pre-lim for PMR as well? Or is medicine the only option?

yes. some programs even allow FP, peds, and psych as acceptable pgy1 years...now to do those...you would have to work that out with the program if they would be willing to take you on.

Here’s the rule, from ACGME:

One year of the four years’ training [in PM&R] will develop fundamental clinical skills. This year of training in fundamental clinical skills must consist of an accredited transitional year program or include at least six months in accredited training in family medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine, obstetrics-gynecology, pediatrics, or surgery, or any combination of these patient care experiences. The remaining months of this year may include any combination of accredited specialties or subspecialties.

So psychiatry in and of itself doesn’t satisfy the requirement. The categorical psych programs require a minimum of 4 months primary care in the intern year, which would not meet the criteria either for PM&R. Now some psych programs might make you do more IM or FM months in the first year. Transferring out of those programs would probably be ok.

It was just something I read on a program website, but thank you for clarifying that.
