Hi,

As I was reading through the AAMC MCAT manual and I found that to be considered a MED-MAR, you need to belong to a racial group that is under-represented and/or ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED. I know that being a URM gives you a better chance of getting into medical schools. My question is: Will you have the same advantage as the URMs if you are economically disadvantaged and not being a URM?

Also, does financial aid give you free money(as they do when you are in your undergraduate studies) when you apply to medical school? Or do they just offer you loans?

Does it matter? If you are URM whether it be disadvantaged background or you are under-represented in medicine then apply with that status.

Most schools have excellent financial packages, but they're not going to hand you a full ride scholarship. Most students, yes even URMs take loans to pay for professional school.

Grants depend on either family situations (having poor parents / growing up helps) or supporting yourself entire (having a solid full-time job goes to this).

Certainly schools also have institutional scholarships to reduce / waive tuition that has nothing to do with the government. They could also have private grants/scholarships in this manner.

And then there's the military.

However, by and large, people borrow money for medical school.

I shouldn't tell you this since it's only a secret between us minority, but when you hit the URM button, it takes you to a new screen where it allows you to select what medical school you want to attend. No primary, secondary, interview, etc. Just like that.

And yes, we do get free sandwiches.
