First off, I couldn't really find answers to these else where; and I need the answers too urgently to leave it in the "Official Secondaries Thread," so please keep the flames short >_<

Obviously it is quite a laid back picture; what is your opinion on using it for the apps?

EDIT: I guess the old pic won't do; here are 2 new ones I took today. I know they are very similar, but which would you prefer?

Secondly, before printing out the PDF secondaries, should I buy some nice quality 'gourmet' paper? And does using a nice envelope help?

No, you should not use it. I would stick with a head shot and wear more professional attire.

No, use regular paper. I doubt anyone will notice.

Cool.
One additional question: where can I look up what my GPA is according to AMCAS? I looked around AMCAS but can't seem to find that stat...

darn. i thought this thread was aboot something else

Imagine this:

Your patient is a 47 year old hispanic female with diabetes, hypertension, and a left foot ulcer. She is coming to see a surgeon (you) because her primary care physician and her wound care physician have been unable to control the ulcer on her foot. You are going to talk to her today about doing a below the knee amputation of her left lower limb....

Do you think she really wants to have that conversation with the person we see in this picture you posted?

The picture should be primairly a head shot and you should have a collar shirt preferably with a tie. This picture will not be taken seriously and you will be labeled off the back as trouble even if you are superman on everything else...

Remember that part of the key on an application is not so much to stand out, but to just be the norm (espically on things such as pictures and personal statements). The norm can get you places... standing out often works against more than for.

Oh, and make sure you get a haircut before you take that picture!!

Medicine is not just about being taken seriously or not. It is not always about a 47 years old Hispanic patient with diabetes .It's about efective treatment, hope and sense of compassion.

I guess i need to (from now on) take Jay leno's jokes seriously... stupid me.

What jungle do you descend from, outlander?

Are you wearing a pedometer in that picture? If so, use this photo. It will say to the adcoms, "Look, I care so much about my health that I count my steps. Accept me and I will count your steps, too."

No, not really. Don't use the picture. But seriously, is that a pedometer?

k thx for all the replies so far!
Update: I've taken 2 new pics. Look in my original post for them. Which is preferrable?

I vote for the one on the right.

he looks mentally challenged in that one, sheesh

although if he cuts one of them down to a simple headshot the last one is prolly better and might get the sympathy response
