Hello

I am currently a student at TCNJ (in New Jersey) and had some questions about whether I can be in-state for 2 states.

Background:
We currently own a house in south Jersey.
My family will be moving to an apartment in North Carolina in July (~10-12 months before the apps for my relevant cycle open the following year)
I am listed as dependent.

I really like the MD schools in North Carolina, UNC, especially, and my stats are compatible with them. However, the NJ MD schools are heavily in-state favoring. I have no idea which state i should list residency under (unless i can qualify for both).

The in-state listing for whichever I choose will pretty much eliminate my chances at the other due to the in state preference.
NJ only has a couple MDs while NC has more. Would it be better listing myself under NC due to this? How long do I/my parents need to live in NC to be considered a resident for NC MDs? Is 10-12 months before +applying+ fine? (it would be at least 1.5 years before matriculating). Or do i just keep status quo and consider myself a NJ resident?

Again, my stats are around the range for accepted students for both states' MDs.
I really don't mind whether I go to med school in NC or NJ (if I get in), but incline towards NC.

looks like you basically just need to look up the residency qualifications for the two states and determine from there. i don't think being a dependent of your family who currently lives in a different state would count,b ut i could be wrong.

you can't just choose which one to list... you are either a resident of one or the other, or both. you can't just pick whichever gives you the "better" advantage.

HMM. I checked my AMCAS and it looks like you can only put one state and county as your permanent residency.

You may be able to be a resident for both (again, didn't know that was possible)... but you will have to ultimately choose one for the AMCAS.

you can only claim one. Being a dependent with parents in another state counts. I think your parents have to meet residency requirements for that state though, and in North Carolina they need to establish domicile for 12 months or more.
