Hey guys, I got the call from UNC tonight. I'm definately gonna give it some thought, but right now I'm leaning toward Brown still...good luck, I'm really routing for everybody else (especially those without an acceptance or at least one at a place they wanna go) cause this actually complicates stuff for me more than anything. Good luck everybody!

Congratulations golftrippy! It may complicate things, but a good choice to have none the less!

i dont know...I do know they have started handing out their scholarships which usually doesnt happen until the class is pretty set (~90%).
Do you have any more information about UNC scholarships?

Congradulationssss golftrippy, great to have some options, wish i knew what it felt like. But, you said you interviewed 10/11 ..ish, so maybe there is hope yet for me (interviewed 10/24) just curious have you heard anything from unc since your interview besides the DND letter, or is this the first time they've contacted you?
Congrats again,
Kevin P.

What's up with the anatomy arrangements?
looks like it will be similar to this year - which was tres cool, and very managable, much better i heard than in previous history, and my vote for best taught course so far. next year there will probably be changes due to location change & construction in berryhill. so, it may involve slightly more scheduled time, but should be ,anagable. the way it will work is prolly like this: 2 groups of 4 per cadaver - don't freak, amazingly this is fine. everyone goes to morning lecture which goes over what you are to find and know. then A-group stays for radiology, B-does dissection. this year B taught A what they found, but next year maybe i think it will be more like another lab, pre-dissected with faculty to help. then groups switch. then there is also embryology, which can be a bitch, but not so bad. *sigh* i miss those anatomy days, when things were simpler.

Wait until they get on the wards. If neuro is high on your list you should come do a rotation at Wake where neuro rocks. I heard that Carolina doesn't match too many into neuro because the department is kinda weak and overshadowed by the excellent psych dept. (which is why I'll be comin to Carolina for a psych elective since psych at Wake has a lousy rep). I'm curious to hear what UNCers say about this. Is it accurate? I heard this from two neurologists.
thanks for the info. yeah, i am not surprised. i think wake has THE gamma knife in town. i'd love to see more of that baby in action. hows things going? we should all hang out again and see how year one went for all of us!

brilliant idea: we should do electives at same time so we can exchange homes.... hehehe i am just interested in eating your wifes cooking. 😉

i shall inquire about psych....

I've heard Wake's strengths lie in Gas and Neuro - anything else, anecdotally? Just curious since that's the kind of info picked up from residents/attendings, not on Goooogle.

Good job buddy!

Congratulations golftrippy!! Go to Brown! jwn, bobodr, and I need 3 seats at UNC and/or ECU. kidding! Well, I hope you end up going to a place where you will be able to use your full potential.

S.

Edit: Just called UNC admissions. She told me 'They are working on all the applicants to make final decisions to either give 'acceptance, waitlist, or unsuccessful'. Can I panic now? Looks like we will know something by mid April.

Students I've talked to said they definitely learned more/better when they were the group doing the dissecting versus being "taught." Do they just not have enough bodies for each group of 4 to have its own?

I saw ur post on that 3.4,37 thread ... I sincerely hate people like that who start those threads. They are ridiculous and are either bragging about their numbers or insecure losers , either way BOBODR doesnt like em. 👎

Cautiously optimistic words of encouragement...
I have a feeling that there will be much much more waitlist movement this year... a shot in the dark but I believe only a handful were taken last year, not more than 10 on the instate list. Oh and as worthless as this title is, I am the almighty king of the UNC waitlist, self-name but still I sunbathed last year in front of the admissions office.

OH and seethrew... i6... whats up!!! I got into UNC!!! 😀
I found out that last year I didn't get into medical school b/c I didn't shave before interviews... how crazy is that!!!

It must be a huge torture to get on the waitlist and come close to getting an acceptance and yet not get it. Man! I admire you for your determination. I am truly glad for your success this time around.

Hey guys thanks. No I hadn't heard anything since the DND letter. From what I could glean from my adcom interviewer, they made a lot of decisions last night. She also said this year was ridiculously competitive. That makes me think it will be harder to get in, but also that there will be waitlist movement as these "competitive" individuals might decide on other schools besides UNC. Just a thought....good luck guys!

Just curious, because a lot of us (including myself) are making similar decisions, why Brown over a more affordable and well-respected state school?

Sure.

1) I've always gone to school in NC, lived in NC....if I had my ideal world I'd get out of NC for a while
2) I loved Brown when I went up there...the students are extremely talented, the faculty is great, Providence is great
3) I know UNC is ranked higher, but its also larger, and that makes an important difference in the ranking (NIH dollars)...honestly, Brown's match list and match history is better than UNC's...this is Brown's in case you wanna look http://bms.brown.edu/students/match/....so I kind of think of them as comparable schools reputation-wise
4) Money is definately at the bottom of my consideration list

I kindof feel the same way - been in NC forever and love it, but it'd be nice to experience a new place for a while, esp the NE. Seems like some sound reasoning on your part, I'm just having some trouble getting past the money issue. It's a tough call, but good luck to you, can't really go wrong either way. Sounds like you're really feeling Brown - if I had a gut I'd go with it.

Hey Guys,

This is sort of off topic but I wanted to post something to give hope. I have a friend that interviewed at ECU 2 years ago in April. She got waitlisted and then got in like a week after getting the WL letter.

So don't fret. I know its hard I am fighting it myself but It's not over until you hear the final word. It is still March and there is still time.

good luck to everyone.

There is always hope as long as Frodo has the ring...... sorry not funny, just bitter.

That sounds good, but I can't guarantee any home cooked meals. My daughter will try to feed you though. She makes food out of play-doh.

LabMonster - Wake is all about high tech. Gas, rads, and neuro are all strong from what I've heard. You should see the new TerraRecon software that the radiology department is using. They scan the person and the scan becomes a 3-D computerized model that you can explore in a gazillion different ways. Rotate the image in any direction, peel back layers from skin to bone, etc. Your cadaver will be scanned into this software and you will get to play with it. I don't recommend it as a way to study anatomy, but it's a fun toy.

Bust - That's crazy. I once new a guy that couldn't get hired until he grew a beard because he looked too young, but haven't heard it the other way around. I always shave when I'm going to be wearing a suit but I hope I didn't get accepted based on my clean shavenness. It sounds like you either shaved this year or they decided to look past the stubble. If I were them, I wouldn't want to be labeled an antistubbleite.

i think so.
honestly, it worked out just fine.
maybe it would have been EASIER to learn it all by dissecting.
but more time consuming, and it was REAL nice to have that time to use ein other ways.
the dissections are scheduled 9:30-12 every other day. try doing that everyday for 9 weeks and get burned out!
but i get your point, and i would agree, but i did really well most of the time that block, and believe me i AM NOT a GUNNER. so it can work out just fine.
in terms of grading, the practical exams are only worth half of your grade, and for me they were probably the best grades i'll ever see again. 😉 the averages were pretty high.
and strict anatomy is not the most emphasized part of USMLE i am sure you know.

you have got to be kidding..... shaving?!?!? NO!
so are you coming or what... or would you rather go to Duke?
hope to see ya round the block! :hardy:

like sneezes i seem to happen in 3s....

just to let you new folks know: we have finally secured a camping site for the 2nd pre-orientation camping trip. last year was a blast and most of the folks who attended are pretty tight friends still. its nice to start out knowing a few familiar faces. this year it will be at Grayson highland state park in virginia.... we lost our NC spot, by the skin of our teeth. it should be awesome. look for info in your orientation packet! hopefully we'll be able to put an insert in that sucker again.

ok. nuff procrastination: not write ethics paper. :barf:

Dissecting does not help everyone learn. For me it was a total waste of time. Wait until you skin a entire leg or spend an hour picking through fascia looking for a nerve and never find it. You will see what I mean. Honestly, your time is better spent going through Netters Flash Cards over and over and over and over and over... I'm not saying you can get away without looking at the real bodies. The most time consuming part of anatomy is learning all of the names of structures. This can and should be done with the cards or an atlas. Learning to recognize those structures in the actual body is easy once you have memorized the atlas. Dissecting the real body before you have learned the structures is a big time waster. Try getting yourself to study the dissection before coming to lab. It's easier said than done.

Hey, super and i6 are in our thread! Nice to see you around again! Is first year winding down for you guys?

We need another NC meetup. I'm hoping to be doing one of the summer programs from May-July at either UNC or ECU, so I might make it this year! Can't wait to meet all of you when I finally get the chance.

Congrats, golftrippy! And to the rest of you, I hope all the waiting will soon pay off. Not hearing by now certainly doesn't mean an automatic rejection. :luck:

post this in your threads tomorrow if UNC frustrates you

I couldn't agree more with your comment. I am taking a human anatomy course now - but in the lab we dissect cat, also work with sheep heart and other animal organs and human models. I find it real easy to pick up and identify structures if I learned the names from an atlas/netter's flash cards before coming to the lab. IF I *EVER* get to become a medical student, I wouldn't learn Anatomy any other way.

Best wishes all.
S.

Little did you know I folded a long time ago... UNC took my pride, my patience, and for the low price of 295.00$ (app fee+hotel+gas) you too can be kicked in the sack and told you just arent good enough.....

Dude, I think I saw that same infomercial last night about 2:15. It seemed like such a deal at the time. Not so much now, in the light of day.

We should all go out for a beer together and chill out for a few hours.

Just so you know, most of this is being silly at work and not getting much done. Definitely a bit bitter, but mostly bored silly.

I'm heading to the UNC Second look in April. They sent me a schedule of events and the lunch is at a pretty nice place (Carolina Inn). Are they expecting interview attire??? Thanks

Hey Guys,

Spoke with Lisa at UNC. Said that everyone will know something by April 15 regardless of the decision. She also said she didn't know if the class was filled yet or not.

Good luck.

Its OK, I have it on very good authority ( a vague and likely made up dream) that I'm getting a full scholarship to Harvard, living expenses, paid dates with the hottest nurse in Boston, and a promise the Bush will excel the rate of global warming to give Boston a pleasent 72 degress temperature during the winter, with classes held in North Pole during the summer.

I may not have applied there but I believe this event in somewhere between 70-100% likely..... during another dream with a probably of 90% I will be in my boxers throughout the dream. 😀

Good luck all. Pretty soon, my hair will be like Anderson cooper's hair..especially if I have to re-apply!

Last monday in MARCHHHHH, i guess everyone should be getting pretty nervous about right now, well atleast ppl like me who have NOOOOOO acceptances yett 😡 , but anyways just wanted to wish everyone goodluck for monday, hopefully they'll have a meeting, but im sure they probably wont make most of their final decisions to April.
Goodluck,
