I tried to research this March 15 rule on the AAMC website. From what I can tell, the date is March 30 and it is a recommendation, not a rule. I found another source on the AAMC website that said March 15, but that was from 2004.

That site was last updated 05/18/2005, so it may be out of date? Or maybe it is correct, and the site I found is out of date. Now that I look at it, the information on the site I found was approved by the AAMC 10/3/2003. So it very well could be out of date. Still, though, March 30 is what is stated on the AAMC site, which I trust over the AMA site. I actually would perfer March 15, because that may mean an admissions bonanza for UNC next Monday!

I think UNC will wait until April to send out the first mass batch of WL and rejections... They are still interviewing...
In lue of April... the WL, I believe, is roughly 45 people in tiers of 15, for instate. However, its not likely to find out your spot, maybe if your good at extracting info carefully in short conversations you may find out what tier your in. In previous years a median 15 +/- 5 seemed to get off... last year I was in the top 10 and didn't get off. They may have made it to my spot and chose a different route...
Best advice is a letter of intent to Dr Hoole, he makes the final decision, update grades, research, etc. Not much else to do. I figure 5 will come off in May, 2-3 in June, and 2 more July and August. May 15th is the deadline for holding multiple acceptances and the most movement.
BUT there should be a good amount of acceptances this month, two from my interview group, November of 2004 got accepted in March 2005. Sooooo good luck, I know it sucks waiting, trust me I know....

It's odd that they must have accepted that many people by March 15. When I interviewed last month, Eric at UNC admission told me that they have only accepted half of the class size. Way to go UNC-or-BUST. 🙂

I haven't been to NW, but Chicago rocks. I think the reps of both institutions are about the same. Both make great physicians. I would choose NW for a change of pace and to be able to explore Chicago for 4 years. But since you are from there maybe you will lean the other way? NW is more expensive, but its only money.
Last reason you should choose NW: to free up a spot for me!

UNC is amazing. I'd go there in a heartbeat if I got in there. Couldn't fault you for picking the other, but UNC has much better weather and is cheaper--don't know about you, but debt is definitely a consideration for me.

As much as I would like to see more free spots at UNC, I think you should choose UNC. I don't know NW's reputation either. If it was a choice between Johns Hopkins or Harvard and UNC, I could see your dillemma. So, unless NW gives you full scholarship, I think you should choose UNC.

If your family is in Chicago, isn't that a stronger reason to be away from them as much as possible? J/K. Having family around helps a lot.

Thanks to everybody for their comments! It's going to be a tough decision; when I was choosing my undergrad college I think I decided the day before decisions were due and had to overnight it. Hopefully it doesn't come down to that again, but it's tough. I was a UNC fan for 18 years but ended up going to Duke and converting (if you've been to a game in Cameron, you'll understand). They're both great schools: UNC will probably be cheaper, Duke probably has more long-range name recognition and I have contacts here already built up. And then to further muddy the waters, my girlfriend who I've been dating for 2 years and I have both gotten into Case, but she hasn't heard from Duke yet. To quote Steve the Pirate: Yargh.

Maybe I should let the outcome of tomorrow's game decide it? Seriously, though, the chance to watch 4 more Duke-UNC games in Cameron will probably be hard to pass up. So what if I'm in the old fogie/grad student section? Yet a little voice inside my head tells me that that's probably not what I should base my decision on...

Wholelottagame, I can see your dilemma...up until yesterday I thought I would be in Chicago and breaking up with my boyfriend who is staying in Raleigh (another pull for NC). I also cannot imagine the extra 200,000 debt from Northwestern. At least Duke gives a 50% grant.....

Thanks ya'll. It happens, when I started the application process I told myself I would be happy to get in ANY american school. I still have that feeling now. Duke would have been nice, but I did not expect it or anything. Also, I got a new interview invite (SUNY Downstate) yesterday, so that kind of takes some of the sting out of it because I am still alive at the same number of schools. Good luck everyone else waiting to hear from Duke!

This will likely make me sound like an ass but... I hope Duke mailed out acceptances, rejections, and then waitlists..... b/c I didn't get hit by the golden brick or the evil poison brick, I just want a normal plain old brick..... Duke blue if possible....(several publications heading out this month, could make the WL very interesting....)

By the way, how long did you stay in Calcutta, India? Did you learn any bengali?

I was there for two and a half weeks during winter break of 04/05. The only Bengali I learned was from an old man that I would spend time with every day at one of the homes. He taught me different body parts, which was really cool because he didn't speak English so we had to figure out a way to teach everything to each other without talking. It was all really incredible.
