If you don't hear from UNC by next wed/Thursday, 'please give us a call'. That's the word from UNC this afternoon.

Many hearts will be overjoyed and many would be broken - They didn't say that of course!
2Deg, did they say letters have gone out? Is that how we should expect to "hear" from them? I am very frustrated with UNC right now......they just drag this process on and on. Thanks for calling and giving us the update.

He was not too clear on that. Letters have not gone out - but I think they will go out next week. And then he asked me 'you live in Durham right?". I said yes. Then he said by Wed/Thursday you should get a decision.

My guess (pure guess) is that they might mail the decisions Monday/Tuesday and he thought since I live in Durham, I will get it within a day or two.

Sometimes USPS do take a week to deliver mail from Chapel hill to Durham. Just so you know..

Hang in there.. all of us will know something soon..

I am real interested in ECU (as if I can afford the luxury of being choosy!!). I called them yesterday. They just give you a standard answer - my file has gone through the committee twice. Not sure what that means - does it mean I might still get some love from ECU?

I think ECU is gonna interview people thru April. I am not expecting to hear anything before mid/end of May.

Best wishes to all.

We should all hear a "final" decision from ECU from beginning to mid-May.

TO i6 the create of the 2005 NC SOM Acceptance/Rejection thread, while I didn't get in last year I wasted hundreds of hours on SDN... Hows life at WF?

What's up Bust? I guess in all your SDN surfing you didn't read about shaving before the interview. WF life is pretty good. In hindsight, it turns out that it's not worth it to eat a poop hotdog to get into Carolina. Everyone I talk to is happy where they ended up. Don't sweat it too much. I stand by my argument of last year that you should decide based on cost. Bust --> UNC (best deal).

USPS is not that slow 🙄 ... but unfortunately it's around holiday time (Easter), so the mail will probably go REALLY slow.

It's going to be great to get a decision finally even if it is bad news

hey - it was nice to see you boys (roboy, wholelotta, bust) at the second look today! its a shame it was so rainy.

if you have *any* questions about anything be sure to let me know.
hope to see more of you next year.
welcome to carolina!!! 😍 👍
it seems like an awesome incoming class...

now back to bacterial taxonomy....... 😴

maybe that should have gone on the class thread in allo... made me feel pretty crappy. anyone else?

I had managed to forget UNC's second look took place this weekend, but I think most of the spurned feel pretty craptastic about this interminably cruel process in and of itself. I'm pretty impervious to additional stimulation. When I go home from class on Monday, I just want an acceptance in my mailbox. If one isn't there and my apartment also happens to have been burglarized, I'll probably just shrug my shoulders.

However, I'm sure some of the SDNers at second look were also left standing in the rain (figuratively) in previous cycles, so I don't begrudge them for celebrating now.

Oh I dont begrudge them either but seethrew is already a student there and for some reason the carolina 👍 😍 hit me ....
could have been done on the allopathic class thread, thats all I am saying.

So, if acceptances were invited to second looks this weekend I guess that means only waitlists and rejections getting mailed out next week. 🙁

Yeah I know what you mean, I'm just being a basket case.

I really hope these letters get here Tuesday.

yes.... there will be no good news next week unless you consider the WL to be so. And to tell you the truth , there is no reason to believe UNC will keep to their word and send stuff out next week to everyone. Its the never ending story ....

I understand from reapplicants that the waitlist is ranked. If the office won't tell us our position, does anyone know of a good way to ascertain where you stand? Maybe emailing your adcom interviewer?

It's not over until it's over and you're right... I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't mail the decisions next week. However, someone could still be accepted, but that's as probable as finding a parking space on UNC campus.

In other news, I was hoping to get UNC-SOM in the Guinness Book of World Records for "Longest Time to Make a Decision"... unfortunately, women still hold the record.

I heard that if a certain NC senator happens to be a family friend, they can find out your exact rank for you.

Bobodr, you can always be counted on to call it like it is. Congrats to those accepted but most people left on this thread on are the ragged edge hoping for the chance of a "waitlist" letter from UNC next week......I really don't want to hear about second look weekend.

jeez, sorry guys... but i think you are overreacting a little.
*pass him the tequila mustangsally*
*and maybe some cheescake for good measure*

i didn't get in at this time last year either... but give me a friggin break.
you are grown adults - i think you can handle it. 2nd look isn't that big of a deal. i give you my support 👍 *too* 👍 cause its not over until August. if you look closely at last years thread "final" didn't get in until the last day of orientation. he is awesome - a great person too, so great he got in. if you needed any questions answered so far i have done it. and will.

there is no reason whatsoever why anyone should need to pussyfoot around you. i didn't get to go last year either. but for all y'alls sanity, i recommend that you try to remain postive despite the uncertainty... the race is not over yet. :luck:

If anyone here can reflect on missing out I'll take that honors. Last year I was the king of overlooked but it worked out this year for me at UNC. You can expect atleast 5-10 people to come off the WL, maybe 10-20. So take this info as a heads up, as it is given. Or else I'll start describing in DETAIL how great 2nd look really was...(example: food, girls, fin aid, etc...) and that will really hurt.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE :luck:
I'll make sure to update withdrawals as I hear them... 👍

Seriously BOBODR? Seethrew is right, you can handle someone mentioning the second look weekend. Not that big a deal. I've tried not to say anything, but you have consistently whined more than anyone I have ever read. Stop feeling so sorry for yourself. It's tiring. Thousands of people get rejected from UNC every year. You got in somewhere. That is more than a lot of people can say.

I apologize to Seethrew.

Then dont read my posts DeaconMD04, skip over them, or dont say anything as no one is making you read them. I dont feel sorry myself in the least. i have been realistic with the UNC process through out....

-sorry if the "whining" according to Demon annoyed anyone. thought the thread was for venting..venting that we could all understand.

Hey Seethrew...
We finish up May 5th, have a 2 week community practice internship type of thing (I'm in wilmington... tough life huh?) Then off to Costa Rica/Nicaragua for a 2 week mission trip. Then the summer research will start. What does yall's schedule look like? "Enjoying" things over there in Chapel Thrill? Been hottubing lately? 😉

i was asking 'cause i was wondering if you and i6 and bust and gdubb and whoever wanted to meet up post school... 👍

Geez, I hope those letters went out today. Did anyone happen to call for a status? I would settle for the waitlist about now. A surprise acceptance would be nice, but I'll take whatever keeps hope alive for UNC. I'm going to try and stay positive until I get the smackdown letter. Good luck to all of us waiting.

I did call today for status and they said the same thing they have been. That all decisions should be made by tomorrow and then letters would go out. The guy told me to feel free and call on thurs or fri If I had not heard anything.

They said decisions would be made by tomorrow? I thought the latest news was letters would go out today or tomorrow. Hmm.. that adds a couple days to the timeline. Vintage UNC. I don't know about you guys, but I just don't think I want to hear this decision over the phone. That's just me. Thanks for the update.

I doubt anybody's going to be in the office on Good Friday. Better make that call Thursday.

I called today as well, they told me that decisions would be made by tonight, and they should recieve the letters tonight and tomorow, and mail them tonight and tomorow as they get them in. She said expect a letter by late this week or early next week. She also said that yes there are some acceptances in those letters but i dont know if she was just trying to be nice, and if there is actually acceptances i dont know if those ppl get calls or not, i guess tonight would be the last chance of a phone call. But either way we'll finally have some answers, so thats good.
Goodluck guys,
Kevin P.

Hey, Kevin.......who did you talk to? Lisa is always really nice, but Mrs. Alston seems to have the most accurate information. I'm just trying to decide if I should get excited about the possibility of some acceptances in this batch of letters. The update is appreciated. Thanks.

Indeed. Even if I don't get the good news, I hope many others from this group (SDNers) get great news this week.

My final exams are on first week of May. I think it would be good to get an early start on re-taking MCAT.

Best wishes all..

are any of you OOS applicants?
chances are much bleaker for those of us who are non-NC residents.
ah well.

I'm too lazy to read many of the posts on this incredibly long thread, but I'm assuming this is for NC residents to post about their school options. I'm at UNC right now and am deciding between UNC and Johns Hopkins for med school next year. Holla if anyone else will be going to either!

Hey wuts up Dave,
I've talked to Lisa everytime I have called, hope shes not getting annoyed with me. But she has been really nice and informative everytime I have talked to her. She said that there would be some acceptances in the letters, so I hope the information is accurate, but either way atleast we will know where we stand by the end of the week, just going to be a long week until that letter gets here.
Goodluck,
Kevin P.

I spent 3 hours (okay, it seemed like 3) trying to find out what is "jsquared".. still don't know.

haha

I was just gonna ask him if he is this guy I know by name, but then I realized that some people probably like keeping their names secret on these forums... kind of like super heroes... anyway if that is who I think it is then he will know what I mean by jsquared and everyone will *hopefully* not get it.

So there, look how well I keep secrets. Guess I won't need HIPAA training!

I didn't want to put this in a new thread b/c people who are not from NC have no clue about ECU. Here goes, feel free to drop whatever knowledge you have on me.

Question: If you had to choose between a "lower tier" school (for me that could be Drexel or SLU) and ECU, what would you do?

Most people will say, "are you f'ing crazy, ECU will be at least $150,000 cheaper over four years." There are two problems for me w/ ECU, however. #1, I don't really care for Greenville. #2 I may be interested in orthopedics and ECU doesn't have a residency program in ortho. I understand that a lot of med students match into theresidency program at their medical school.

I can deal w/ #1, but am worried about #2. Thoughts?

If I get waitlisted at ECU, you should definitely choose Drexel!

Otherwise..

"are you *deleted word* crazy, ECU will be at least $150,000 cheaper over four years."

Thanks for the advice 😉 ! And to clarify, my original post was a hypothetical question. I haven't heard anything from ECU since I interviewed beginning of Nov.

My question still stands: Do you think it matters if the school you go to (in this case ECU) doesn't have a residency program in the specialty you're interested in?

Good luck getting into Ortho. People do seem to match at their own school more easily in certain specialties, but I'm not sure ortho is one of them. The most important things are going to be step 1 and 2 scores, class rank, your grade in the surgery rotation, and letters of recommendation. If you went to ECU you could probably do an ortho rotation at UNC or Duke which would help you make good contacts. If you have grades, scores, and letters I doubt they are going to hold your school against you. Conversely, if you hang out with the ortho guys for four years but end up in the bottom half of your class you will not match in ortho (a PD told me this). There is no real way of quantifying a hypothetical advantage that you might have at one school or another. Keep in mind though that you can interview at both ortho and general surgery programs and rank all the ortho programs at the top. Then if you end up in general surgery you can try to match into ortho the next year. I talked to an ortho doc that did this. I said it must have sucked to do two internships, but she said it was worth it and that it wasn't that bad. An extra year of surgical training is not really a waste of time because you end up being a better surgeon. My point is that ortho is one of the most difficult specialties to get into, but it is doable if you want it badly enough.

I asked a similar question during my interview at UNC-CH and the ENT I was talking to told me that going to ECU can really screw you for getting into competitive residencies (like ortho) and the issue extends beyond just the fact that ECU doesn't have many non-primary care type residencies. The real issue becomes what kind of contacts are you making during medical school, because a lot of these kind of issues can be decided based on who you know. In my case, that made the decision easy because I know I will have the opportunity to make a lot of contacts at UNC, so that made up my mind. If you think you can make better contacts at SLU or Drexel then I think you would NOT be crazy to consider going there, but make sure you really want to specialize first. It would suck to have that debt and someday realize that you could have just gone to ECU and done the same thing.

This is the guy that has been trying to convince you to go to UNC... mostly cause I need a third roommate. 😛

I just called UNC for a status update on final decisions that were supposedly going into the mail yesterday. The guy I spoke with said that they did indeed mail *some* of the decisions, but that the committee is still deciding on a number of applicants. He told me that everyone will know by the end of the month whether you have been accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. By now I believe there is an emphasis on the waitlisted or rejected options.

Oh well, keep the faith and try not to go insane with the waiting.
