I just called UNC for a status update on final decisions that were supposedly going into the mail yesterday. The guy I spoke with said that they did indeed mail *some* of the decisions, but that the committee is still deciding on a number of applicants. He told me that everyone will know by the end of the month whether you have been accepted, waitlisted, or rejected. By now I believe there is an emphasis on the waitlisted or rejected options.

Oh well, keep the faith and try not to go insane with the waiting.

So the waiting game will continue... awesome!

My thoughts exactly.

Hey, if they wait til May 4 to let me know, it'll be 7 months to the day since I interviewed! Do you think they will send a cookie with my decision? I hope its a thin mint. I like thin mints.

Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never apply to UNC-CH and expect to get a straight answer! Haha haha haha ...............................

Love that movie, so many great quotes from it.

Miracle Max's wife: "Do you think it will work?"
Miracle Max: "It would take a miracle."

Its a little known fact that Miracle Max and his wife were discussing the probability of UNC applicants hearing something before May.

Well, if they actually sent mail yesterday (no reflection on you diamondmaker...the story changes daily), the postman didn't deliver anything today. Don't know what that means though. Am I still in the running for the much coveted waitlist? Or does my big envelope acceptance package take longer to get through the US mail than the thin envelope? Or will rejections go out as the final batch of letters so the torture can last as long as possible? :meanie:

Just kidding UNC. All is forgiven if you will JUST LET ME IN!

Anybody get news today? Good luck to us all.

Well, I received bad news, not accpeted to the summer program at ECU. I am hoping it was because I already have my masters and would be taking a spot from a more "deserving" person. But, either way, I wanted to start something!
I also called UNC and spoke with Lisa. She said, without a doubt, we would all have letters in our hands by the end of next week. I won't hold my breath.
Either way, she did say there were acceptances in those letters and that the majority of them were WL and rej letters.
So, I hope someone will be happy next week.
Have a nice Easter.

I talked to someone in the ADCOM office and they said definitely a letters are going out today, promise. Or maybe next Thursday, ok ok all letters will be out by ATLEAST May 1st.... 2010. If you do not recieve a letter by the time this class graduates then call the office immediately... or by 2011.
I sorry guys, I went through this last year, they are preparing everyone for working with doctors. I have a doc that if he says 10 minutes you have use this equation: time given (min) * 350%+15 (min)[walking time from office to lab]+ 8min*people doc meets on the way+20 min*people doc meets that are higher in the admin= time to meet up +/-5 min.
So using UNC's example:
NEXt weeks 10080 min until next week (Thurs)*350%= 35280 + delievery(2 days instate) 2880+ 0 people on the way= 26.5 days. Sometime next month!!!
👍
You are all welcome for an exact answer!

Well I just talked to Eric in the office (very helpful). He said hopefully decisions would go out next week, but the good news is that there are still acceptances going out. It seems that a fair numbers of accepted students have declined, which may be at least partially responsible for the continuing delays in getting the decisions out. Anyway, I know the admissions staff has given out some conflicting reports, but I just wanted to offer this account for everyone.

I may be interested in orthopedics and ECU doesn't have a residency program in ortho. I understand that a lot of med students match into theresidency program at their medical school.

I ran across something that I thought you would be interested in. Happy Easter.

An analysis of orthopaedic residency selection criteria.

Bernstein AD, Jazrawi LM, Elbeshbeshy B, Della Valle CJ, Zuckerman JD.

NYU-Hospital for Joint Diseases, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, New York, New York, USA.

The lack of literature on residency selection criteria used by orthopaedic program directors has left medical students in the position of relying on rumor and anecdotal information as to what program directors value most highly when sorting through large candidate pools. The purpose of this study was to compare the perspectives on resident selection criteria solicited from orthopaedic program directors and residency applicants. A power analysis was done to determine adequate sample size. A 26-item questionnaire was mailed to 98 residency applicants who interviewed at our program and 156 orthopaedic program directors. The program directors were also asked to elaborate on those factors that were most important in their selection process. A two-tailed Student's t-test was employed to compare the two groups. Significance was set at p < 0.05. Statistically significant differences between applicant and program director ratings were found in 12 of the 26 questionnaire items. Applicants (n = 91) ranked the following criteria as most important: a letter of recommendation from an orthopaedic surgeon (8.6 on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being most important), USMLE I score (7.7), and rank in medical school (7.6). The most important criteria for the directors (n = 109) were: the applicant performed a rotation at the director's program (7.9), USMLE I score (7.8), and rank in medical school (7.8). This study provides the most comprehensive empirical data to date as to the factors which orthopaedic program directors consider most important during the residency selection process. To our knowledge, this is the first study in the orthopaedic literature that compares the program directors 'and residency applicants' views on resident selection criteria. Significant differences were found between applicant and program director views on resident selection criteria.

The only significant difference I see is the letter of rec vs. rotating at the specific program? I suppose this is "significant" b/c it is greater than 5% difference, but not SIGNIFICANT!!! b/c two of the top three priorities were the same for both pools... 😕

Thanks i6, the Easter Bunny came early this year. How much do you know about Wake's surgery rotation? Do you rotate through diff services?

So I guess I should hope for UNC, Wake or Pitt. Convenient, because that's what I've been hoping for all along.

I'm still a first year so I don't know much about the surgery rotations. I've seen a list of fourth year electives and I know we have electives in general surgery, plastics, CT surgery, neurosurgery, ortho, ENT, peds ENT, and urology. There are also surgical rotations for non-Wake students.

Nothing. I was getting excited when I saw a couple of manilla envelopes in there, but they turned out to be junk

Who wants to set up an NC meet for this summer? I'm thinking early to mid June. Y'all are going to have to help me out with suggesting possible places to meet in Chapel Hill or Raleigh or wherever everyone decides on, because I'm certainly not familiar with the area.

So basically what I'm asking is:

When is a good weekend?
Where should we meet (i.e. Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham etc.)?
What restaurant/club should we meet at (or other location)?

Any other thoughts would be welcome. Lots of luck to everyone still waiting to hear, maybe everyone will know by this time next week. :luck:

Just wanted to say goodluck to everyone, hopefully we'll see some goodnews in the next couple days.
Goodluck,
Kevin P.

Chapel Hill, Probably earlier in the summer than later
votes?

I just talked with Lisa and she said "we are in the process of mailing the letters right now so you should know something by the end of the week." Well at least they have finished deciding things ...

Any time is good for me as far as I know. I'm doing the summer MED program in Chapel Hill so I'll be out there from May 22-July 22. 😀

Looking forward to finally meeting ya, Bust!

Sometime mid-June will work for me. I vote for Chapel Hill 🙂

:luck: to everybody who's still waiting,

My friend and his wife just called again this morning for confirmation and they received the exact same message verbatim ... it's a miracle!

Anyways, good luck to everyone in this final push of letters :luck:

I called yesterday and they invited me to call on Thursday if I wanted the results over the phone. Of course, they had said the same thing about the last few Thursdays...

Good luck to everyone out there holding their breath. I think I'm gonna crawl out of my skin, the uncertainty of where I'll be in a few months is killing me. I'm not sure that finding out I made the waitlist will alleviate much of the pain - it will just prolong the agony. Sometimes it is better to simply pull the bandaid off quickly - If I'm not going to get in, I'd like to know up front so I can move on with the planning of which banks to rob to come up with out of state tuition for EVMS.

But you are the diamondmaker!!! Have you already been accepted at EVMS? I have been waitlisted there. I am not pushing too hard to get off the waitlist. Tuition over there sucks! 37K. Loved that school and students though.

Congrats on the MED program. I probably don't need to tell you this, but study until bedtime every day for those two months (including weekends). Memorize everything. That is what the professors want and it's your ticket into UNC c/o 2011. Prepare yourself mentally for this (i.e. eliminate all distractions). It will take a lot of will power. :luck:

Some of us remember what happened to gdubb. I think she did well enough to get good letters from the profs, but got rejected anyway. In fact they told her she was waitlisted, pushed her down, kicked her a couple times, then rejected her. She got into GW, so in the end it's Carolina's loss. My point is that doing well might not be enough. You need to rock the **** out of that program. For those two months, do nothing but study (yes that means no SDN :scared: ).

About MED: everyone who is not intimately familiar with the program thinks it is God's gift to UNC applicants. Well, that depends.
While the fat lady is not singing yet, she is certainly warming up and I have not received any love from UNC yet (look at my mdapps). Neither is a friend of mine who finished higher than me last summer. Meanwhile, students who finished considerably lower than us have been admitted to med and dent school at UNC within a month of their interviews. Very distressing.
I know you will say, "what about your interviews, you must not have come across very well." On the contrary, both interviewers told me I did very well.

I know this post sounds very negative, and it probably is. I just would not want anyone to go into the program thinking if they did extremely well that they are a lock at UNC med. The program does have many benefits, I just don't think that this is one.

BTW, Sally and I have conversed at length by PM, and I have recommended she do the program.

spoke with lisa this morning.
she suggested that they'll not be giving out status reports until early next week, allowing time for all letters to be delivered.
she apologized, as well, for the fact that the decision-making process has taken much longer than expected.

I know there has been some sort of difficulty within the UNC Admissions office but it would have been much more considerate to all us applicants out here to have been proactive about letting people know there would be delays instead of just a) hoping that no one would bring it up, b) giving conflicting accounts, and c) apologizing after the fact.

Oh Lisa, you're still a nice person though ... it's not you, it's the bureaucracy 😉

I think the DND letter mentioned that you would probably hear in April. The big problem is that UNC has a COMPLETE MONOPOLY over the best medical school in state. So I don't think the adcom really cares about being proactive.. you get the decision when you get the decision. Be thankful the gods invited you to the school.

So have all of the letters gone out yet?

I don't get it. If they wait for all the letters to get delivered, why would anyone call for status reports afterward? 😕

Can you elaborate more on your experience and how you are evaluated at the end of the program?

Read the posts on this page and look at my mdapps signature.

Super briefly: Good experience overall, at this point I'm not sure if I would have done it, knowing what I know now. I don't think it helps you get into UNC med, unless you are a minority. All the interviewers I had outside NC had never heard of the program not well known outside NC). Hard work, but you definitely don't need to spend all your time studying unless you have poor study habits (I went to the beach three weekends last summer).

Evaluations: They give you a composite letter from all the classes you take. It has all your grades broken down by class, and your overall grade (83% or whatever). Someone writes a summary of your summer experience and past experiences, that is included on the front (it basically explains who you are, what knd of person, etc). Based on all this, you can be "strongly recommended", recomended pending further work, or two other classifications I can't remember that are progressively "worse". Also, unless you finish in the top 20 (out of about 80 or so), you will never know how you stack up against the rest of the class, as they don't rank beyond 20.

A good experience to have, just don't count on it getting you into UNC med. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Edit: Forgot to mention that, last year at least, they gave monetary prizes if you finished in the top 20. I wanna say that the girl who finished 1st got like $200. I got like 50 or 25, can't remember. One more reason to study hard. 😉
