So how about one of you guys give some advice to someone who's about to go interview at SLU =P

my only advice is get dr. furman as an interviewer...shes awesome...ive heard that SLU in general asks generic questions...all the questions i was asked i found on SDN's interview feedback...and ive heard the med students u eat lunch with have a say so beware...gl

damn, I wish I had known that earlier.

BAHA were you an ass or something?

I was assigned Dr. Drake. I was told he was cool too.

If you get Dr. L James Willmore, dean of admissions, be on your toes. He's in no way a confrontational or mean-spirited interviewer, but he will keep you on your toes, and purposely prevent the interview from becoming "too" casual. He'll probe and ask some moderately difficult questions. I was surprised he didn't ask the obvious questions like "why you want to be a doctor" or "why SLU" though. Well, I guess I did alright at the interview though, despite my sincerest fears. 😀

I just got an interview invite email less than an hour ago (11:50 Pacific time). So for all you waiting for an interview from SLU, check your email! I'm interviewing Nov. 19th in San Francisco.

congratulations paceac!
when were you complete?

I was complete early August and was just invited. Does anyone know how they view regional interviewees? I don't want to come across as unenthusiastic about the school but I would love to save $$$.
Also, I love SLU for offering regional interviews. I don't think schools do this anymore, but I know most of them used to. Does anyone know the reason behind that trend?

bubbbleyum- Thanks. I was complete the first week of September.

caffeine37- I'm not sure how they view regional interviewees. I thought about that myself but I only live an hour or so from San Francisco so it was hard to justify taking the time off work and spending all that money. I agree, the regional interviews are very nice.

I got an email from SLU last night saying that my fee had not been paid. And then I realized that the online app saves my credit card number and does a batch later. So I guess they tried to process the batch last night and mine didn't go through. I was mugged a few weeks ago and got a new credit card and forgot to update it on my application. The email said that my file had been under review from the time that it said "complete" online until now, and to continue the review process, I must submit payment.

Does this mean they are trying to send an interview invite? That's what I hoped last night, but today, nothing in the email. What's going on? are they just taking my money in order to reject me? That would be unfortunate.

I'm sorry you got mugged. That's no fun. I'm not sure what is going on with SLU. I would call them.

I submitted my payment and it was all processed as of this morning, so I guess I'll give it another day. Maybe I'll get an email invite tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

I got the regional interview invite today too.. I'm interviewing on 11/18 in SF! =)

Do you know what to make of your interview itenerary? Mine says that a committee member will conduct interviews at 8AM-9AM, then I suppose mine is from 9AM to 9:30 AM with Dr. Gail Furman? (that's what is blue), then it says that a committee member will conduct interviews from 9:30-4:30pm So my interview is only a half hour??

Good luck!!

8:00 AM - 9:00 AM A Committee member will conduct interviews at:

Embassy Suites Hotel
San Francisco Airport - Burlingame

I got the same sort of message. It is kind of confusing but yes, I think the interview is a half hour. Mine is on 11/19 with Gail Furman, Ph.D.. Good luck to you too.

regional interviews are the same are regular ones...they just try and make it convenient for you...i and messerschimts both had regional interviews and we both got accepted...good luck!

yeah, its only 30min...you go only for the interview...theres nothing else you need to attend...and gail furman is great! your lucky to get her...she is very relaxed and really tried to get to know you...pm me if you have any questions about her

Hey guys,

i didn't know this thread existed.
I wanted to ask you guys to tell me unique things about the school, since i'm going there and may come up.
I wanted to ask who your interviewer was (maybe you could PM me), and see if i have the same one you did, that would be MOST helpful.

thanks

I have a question about SLU's stats. I dont understand how a "non ranked" school can have mcat averages of like 31-32 with a 3.75 avg gpa for accpeted students. These numbers seem ridiculous yet everyone considers SLU a backup school. I would love to go , or even interview at SLU but thats doubtful at this point. DO they just accept alot of people with sick stats knowing they wont go there and then have matriculating averages alot lower or something? Otherwise I dont understand. 😕

you might find this article interesting 😉

Can someone please post the link for the secondary/update site for SLU? I got in a few days ago and need to make sure of a few things and for some reason I can't find the link. Thanks a lot.

i'm gonna show up to that SF regional interview and pretend i was invited. i love crashing interviews.

I received the same email asking for my fee last week. I put my old credit card when submitted my secondary in AUgust and the expired day for this card was at the end of October. I wonder if repaying the fee will put us at the bottom of the list again. That would be really suck. anyway, I hope we receive interview invite soon.

We should both call to find out what is up, whether this means a decision about interviews will be made soon.

Good luck, let me know what you find out.

If you have any questions let me know! Word of caution too: students you eat lunch with are ON the admissions committee and DO NOT tell you! That didn't stop me from being conversational and enjoying lunch, but beware.

Hey, I'm a second year at SLU and it's my understanding that no students are on the admissions committee. I'm curious as to where you got this information.

As an aside--I'll use this reply to plug SLU. It's really a great school and I'm very happy here. I turned down 3 other acceptances to attend, and I don't regret it for a minute. The faculty is very encouraging, and I feel strongly that SLU is preparing us well for the boards and beyond.

I too think it's interesting about the high incoming MCAT and GPA. I've been out of the premed loop for awhile (trust me, when I was there, I knew all the stats like the back of my hand), but is it just a sign of an increasingly competitive applicant base? Whatever the case, it's showing. The year ahead of us had amazing board scores, and my year is looking to top them. Supposedly, we are setting record means on each exam.

Perhaps SLU just clicks with certain number of quiet, smart people, and you never hear about it. Anyway, I wish you all luck.

Hey, that's me! 😀 (excuse the hubris, but I am pretty quiet). Thanks for the input, Lion-O, glad to hear you're happy there. Some of the interview feedback said that many SLU students looked very stressed out, but I'm sure that's how it is at all schools during exams.

Btw, has anyone who got accepted via e-mail received an official acceptance "packet" yet? (the so-called "fat envelope" in street parlance) I've been waiting for a week already. I'm really happy to have gotten that e-mail acceptance, but I'm a paranoid person, and I'm not gonna completely let out that sigh of relief until I'm holding something concrete in my hand (like a "Welcome to St. Louis" pamphlet for newly accepted students). The original e-mail said my "official letter of acceptance will be sent soon", then a couple of days I got another e-mail congratulating me yet again, but also asking for my $100 fee to hold my spot. That wasn't all there was to the official acceptance letter, was it? Are they waiting for my $100 before they send me the fat envelope? If this sounds super paranoid I apologise, I didn't get into med school last year, so I'm still reeling from having gotten in, and I want to have my spot SECURED!!! 😀

Yo Messershmidt,

I got the acceptance e-mail last Tuesday, sent in the $100 last Thursday. What's the deal with the credit report? I'll eventually call the office and ask, since it's still way early in the admissions cycle, but I was just wondering what kind of credit report they need. The fact that they need a credit report scares me...b/c it means we are likely to need more than just federal aid (Fed aid has nothing to do w/your credit, wheras Sallie Mae/alternative loans, over the amount Feds will loan you, are dependent upon credit). I know a first year there who has had to borrow from private lenders (meaning crappy interest rates).

I'm a re-app also (got wait-listed at Cornell and NYU last time around), so I, like you, am happy to be in somewhere at last. If it weren't for the cost, I would be a lot more likely to go there. I'll be happy with it if I don't get in anywhere else, but damn...state school for 80-90K, SLU for 145??? That's 55K you could use to buy you're first beamer when you're done with residency. I guess we'll just wait and see what happens...I guess we'll have to hit up the bars in soulard if we both end up going there...and put the drinks on credit since we won't have any cash!!!

I got in w/a 34 & 3.97, but I'm sure as heck not quiet. In fact, I'm probably one of the loudest, most talkative people around...then again, I was really really tired the day of my interview, and I had a benadryl the night before, so maybe I came off as quiet. ha ha j/k...glad to hear you like it there Lion-O...

though I think it's a great school and everything, and I like everyone there a lot, and I might very well end up there, I'm still stand-offish about the cost....were the other 3 schools you got into cheaper??? I might need some convincing of "why SLU and not a cheaper alternative" if I get into my state school and have to choose.

A positive thing they had going was that guy from UCLA...he basically convinced me that the school, though it is currently ranked 62, is (hopefully) moving up and doing better. I like thinking that the school is moving upwards, b/c knowing the school might be higher-ranked/more prestigious in 4-15 years makes me more likely to pick it as the school whose name will be forever listed on my CV.

Haha, I think I should have been more specific when I said "quiet." I didn't mean literally quiet; I meant quiet in terms of choosing SLU without making a lot of noise about it (on these message boards, for instance). My bad for being unclear.

You have a good point about the cost, and it's definitely a consideration. One of the schools I was accepted at was public and was quite a bit cheaper. However, I just couldn't see myself there. In my mind, the happier life I saw myself having at SLU for the next 4 years was worth the extra money. But still, it's a lot of debt, and I don't look forward to having to deal with it later.

The UCLA guy--Dr. Slavin. He is really, really awesome (I think everyone says that about someone on their faculty though). It's true that the school is moving upward (the increasing competitiveness, the new research building, etc.), but to me it's just an added bonus. The school is comfortable, and I feel like I'm really being prepared to become a doctor.

i would love to interview at slu and haven't heard anything(april mcater).

do you think slu has a preference for california/west coast residents? seems like most of the people getting interviews and acceptances there are from cali...

I haven't heard anything from SLU yet either. I don't think they have a preference for CA people. It's just b/c their state schools are so competitive, a lot of CA people with really good stats apply to schools like SLU as a backup... Once SLU works their way through them, you'll probably hear something. Good luck!

I find it strange that they offer regional interviews in California.. Do they do this for other states as well??

For once, it's GOOD to be a CALIFORNIAN!!!!

ALSO: they might have the regional interviews only during a certain time of the interview season.. so they want to get all the californians in when they can.. just my guess.

California is probably far and away the state with the most applicants there, at least of the ones that are far away from the school...

For those who have gotten emails from SLU regarding a failed credit card transaction or other payment related issues:

I just called them because I had to re-submit a different credit card # and wondered whether this indicated a decision was about to be made to interview me, or whether this meant that I'm back at the bottom of the list.

Here's the scoop-- SLU just found out that quite a few of the fees didn't go through, so they are just notifying people about that. It doesn't change anything about your current status. You are likely still under review and you are not placed at the bottom of the list to be considered for interview. Unfortunately, it also does not mean that they were just about to interview me when they found out tha my fee was not paid. I'm still in the waiting pool for an invite. waiting waiting waiting...sheesh I'm just down the street. Just interview me already.

In case anyone cares, I just called SLU. The e-mail soliciting the $100 place-holding fee was considered the "official" letter of acceptance. There will be no physical acceptance packet or "fat envelope" being sent. Any new student information compilation wouldn't be out until the summer, and even then the admissions office said they might just offer it online. So much for something concrete to hold onto. 😛

i'd like a concrete letter inviting me to interview.

For the interview e-mail, the online secondary changed in that the "my interviews" section allowed you to pick a date/time for your interview.

For the acceptance e-mail, nothing changed on the status page.

Not sure if I answered your question...but I'm bored so I tried!!!

Did any of you guys get Dr. Drake for an interview? I have him next week. What did you think about him?

Is SLU big on ethics questions? And did anyone interview with Dr. Drake?

Sorry, interviewed with Dr. Willmore. I didn't get asked any ethical questions. I did get asked about current events though ("what's wrong with the economy?" "How do we fix healthcare?")
