SLU is actually my second choice (I am also "hold listed=waitlisted" at PSU) I *loved* SLU, but I am *IN LOVE* with Penn State, so I am writing a LOI to them. I guess I figured it wouldn't be appropriate to write a LOI to SLU of they are not #1... any other opinions on that one? 🙄 what if I wrote a letter stating I am still very interested, without saying "#1 choice," would that be appropriate? 😉

Definitely appropriate. Say anything up to "you are my #1 choice" that will make them feel warm and fuzzy inside.

That sounds great!! SLU is my only acceptance and I hear great things about it! The curriculum at SLU is awesome! I had a regional interview so I'm still going to visit the school and the city to see if I like the atmosphere or if I should stay on my waitlists. I'd be more than happy to go to SLU! You should definitely visit! I think you will like it, they don't have brand new buildings but I don't understand these people who want to go to a well known school, but don't want to deal with the age of the campus! They still have state of the art equipment/labs/patient simulators, I thought the campus was cool! There is an underground tunnel to the university hospital across the street. The school is very well known and very involved with the community. (yeah, it's not WashU but I wouldn't want go there as their philosphy & selection process doesn't fit with my philosphy, best qualities and goals as a physician) I have heard some people complain at the fact that SLU is a commuter campus, but that does not bother me at all. 😉 A lot of the students live in areas 15-20 mins away that they love 🙂

I definitely liked SLU and this is most likely the school I will attend, but I don't feel like I got enough of a feel for the place so I will ask questions about some of my fears. Does anyone have any input on the feel of the school? particularly how well the students get along, help each other, and socialize together? It seems that since it is a commuter school there are a lot of people you see at school but would never get to know socially outside of school. Does anyone live walking distance to the campus? or is it a little dangerous/crummy?

Also what are people's feelings on the city? Everyone I've talked to says its just ok.

I probably wouldn't live within walking distance to the school, the neighborhood is not terrible, but there aren't many restaurants or shops or anything really close to campus, nothing too terribly social, but the hospital cafeteria was pretty delicious, surprisingly! The surrounding area is pretty, oh, how do you say... industrial. 😛 You definitely do not want to cross the river and wander in to East St. Louis, from what I understand that is a pretty rough area!

I thought the city was a lot of fun! A lot of the students live near forest park, west of SLU, near WashU, and a lot of the SLU med students and WashU med students live all in the that area, which is safe and nice. I talked to one student who had a loft in that area and really liked it socially. 😎

i have heard that there is a divide between the students that are from the scholar program and those who are not...that is, those from the scholar program already know each other and have their own groups.

I have the 2004 US News that says in the Fall of 2003 they accepted 483 and 158 enrolled. I am not sure if the waitlist is broken down into in-state and out-of-state, but here are those numbers:

IS: A=73 Enr=46
OOS: A=410 Enr=112

I am not sure if SLU overaccepts for IS or OOS, perhaps someone else that knows can answer that. But, assuming that recent years have followed the 2003 trend, I would say that the waitlist moves quite a bit. Does anyone know if the waitlist is ranked? I've heard that it is, but also heard that you have no way of finding out what number you are. If anyone has more insight as to how the waitlist works, or if there are separate IS and OOS lists, please post.

waitlist IS ranked but they wont tell you diddly...and i dont think they differentiate IS/OOS since SLU is a private institution. gl to those WLed

Here's a bit of good news for those on the waitlist: SLU is admitting about 20 more students this year than it has for past classes.

I asked and they said they don't tell people what number they are on the waitlist, or how many students are even on there. let's hope for movement after May 15!

My interview there was verly low-stress and I was accepted. I don't know if that is the norm, or if I just got lucky. I also interviewed in March, so a late interview doesn't kill you at SLU. But, things to know:

For me, it was open file. Be aware and ready to discuss any "red flags" or problems with your application. I had a few low grades and even an MCAT section that was low. This was actually the first 5 minutes of my interview (only roughly ~30 min total). So this could have been morally defeating if I wasn't prepared. I looked at your profile. 10's on the MCAT are right near their average, so you're in great shape. You might be asked about GPA issues, because that is below their stats. After the "red flags" be prepared to talk about why you want to go to their school. SLU is jesuit, and thus, big on community service. It's also located in the ghetto, fyi. As a school they are known for clinical experience, though their research is ranked somewhere at the end of USNEWS and improving (not a reason to go there though). Do some research on their website and find things you like. You might want to just read this entire thread, it's got some good stuff that helped me. Finally, like in any interview, sell yourself. Talk positively about your experiences and come off like a nice and normal person.

congrats on your acceptance to SLU NotAnMD. When in March did you interview there, if you don't mind me asking. I interviewed on March 28 and I have a hunch that might be hearing something back next week. I don't have any acceptances yet and I'm waiting on Drexel and SLU post interview for some good news.

During my interview at SLU, I was also asked a lot of details from my file and why my first MCAT was crappy as well as my low freshman year grades. Other than that, the interviewer and I had a great conversation and the interview lasted an unusual hour and fifteen minutes (very long compared to my Drexel one). We talked about places to eat in St. Louis, my activities, and the interviewers interests so the time went by fast. Oh, I was also asked about personal challnges that I had faced, if anything...that made for an interesting answer (or a boring one...not too sure bout that).

I hope that helped some Pacboy. Looks like you're waiting on Drexel's decision as well! Good luck to both of us on having a successful application cycle...and remember to relax during the SLU interview and I'm sure you'll do fine!

I had Dr. Lee for an interview in January. He was really nice and it was a really relaxed interview. It was in his office in SLU's hospital. He asked pretty typical questions, but do be prepared to answer any questions concerning particular grades. He asked me about a class I withdrew from, but I had an easy answer. The whole experience was really great, and it gave me a wonderful feeling about SLU. If you have any more questions about Dr. Lee, pm me. Good luck!!

I too had Dr. Lee. One of the most freshing things about SLU was how candid everyone was regarding SLU's faults and drawbacks. I was actually told outright that SLU is not a top 10 school nor will it ever be. While I tend to agree with this statement, 9 times out of 10 you'd never hear an adcom say anything to that effect.

I will be attending SLU in the fall. I will be honest in the fact that I never had the magical "feeling" walking the halls there. Its a medical school and I want to be a doctor. Plain and simple.

hey has anyone heard anything about financial aid packages? I turned in the additional forms last week, so i called yesterday to find out when i can expect a package. I was told that they haven't started awarding med students yet because of a glitch in the system, but they should be sent out in the next couple of weeks. when i asked if this would occur before may 15, she said they should be.

anyone get a package or hear differently?

The Townehouse (where I'm living) and Parc Frontenac and the Maryland Lofts rock. They're about $800 a month for great apartments (800 square feet). Generally the Central West End is the place to be. He's a nice guy. You'll meet him during lunch (if you have an afternoon intervew) when he asks everyone to introduce themselves a bit and talk about their interest.

His questions are a different from what you would traditionally expect. He didn't ask me anything about my grades or MCAT scores or anything. He was more intersted in my sister's grades at FIT (go figure). He's very knowledgable and seems like the guy who can easily spot BS. So, be honest and be yourself. My interview ran about 45 min and it was very conversational. He really just wants to get to know you on a personal level, at least that was my experience.

the committee meets on a regular basis to discuss applicants. i got in off the waitlist 3 weeks after being waitlisted. SLU's waitlist usually sees a lot of movement in the summer.

I just wanted to know what/if you sent anything after being waitlisted. Did you speak with your interviewer? Send a bribe, paypal, etc. And is there any way in God's green earth to find out how many people are waitlisted at SLU and on average, how many people, they usually take off the waitlist?

He was very laid back, asked me lots of questions about my job and ec's, we talked about my family, interests, future. No questions at all about MCAT (which I took twice) or my C's (I have two, one in O-Chem and one in physics). Be yourself, relax and enjoy your time at SLU!
