It depends on where you are coming from. I have driven from CA to STL/STL to CA five times now and I am about to make my sixth trip back next week. From Northen CA (from Sac) the best way is the 80 all the way and cut down to KC then take the 70 into STL. We drove to Park City (it took 9 hours or so), then drove 18 hours straight to KC, then KC is only 4 hours from STL. We did this with a 3 year old and a dog. From Southern CA (from Pasadena) 210 to the 15 to the 40 to the 44. It is a straight shot across nothingness. With a pregnant wife, a 3 year old, and my dog it took us 3 days. I drove it childless in 1.5 days but I could have made it one. This last trip we took a detour and went thru Denver (Vegas, then to So CA, then back up to Northern CA), I wouldn't recommend the Denver route. Travel safely. PM if you have any questions.

SIX TIMES?! You're crazy! I'm almost done with my first LA-Stl trip. I'm currently in Oklahoma City. The Gallup, NM to Oklahoma City, OK, stretch is brutal! The last 100 miles of each day was alwayst the toughest for some reason. Oh well, just 500 more miles tomorrow and I'm done! Woo hoo!

Heh, I'm finally in STL. It is friggin' hot and humid here! And here I thought I'd gotten away from the heat in California. It's followed me here! =P

Welcome to MO!. You got here just in time for our next major heat wave. Heat advisory in effect until 7 PM Wednesday. Highs are expected to reach triple digits, heat index even higher. Stay cool!

I'm glad my apt has great a/c. I'll probably be doing a lot of studying at my apt. Where do you guys usually study?

For studying, St. Louis Bread was great. Free wireless internet, free samples, bottomless soda, and comfy booths. For me, home has too many distractions and school...well, I spent too much time there already so the change of scenery was great....lots of people liked the library too...

Can someone tell me a cell phone carrier that gets great reception in the St. Louis area? I currently have Verizon but it doesnt' seem to be very good, or is it just my apt?

Cingular or ATT, whatever it's called now, has always worked well for my family and I when we're in the St. Louis area.

Sprint gets the best reception. I just graduated from Wash U and Sprint was pretty nice over my 4 years. The customer service is HORRIBLE, but sprint is fine so long as you don't have to deal with the customer service (but it seems customer service at all cell phone places suck)

Really? Sprint is the best around here? Spring was like the worst in LA
Verizon was the best in LA.

My Verizon works fine in STL

Ask some of the other med students about the sprint discount. There is a woman who gives a discount to medical students/residents. I can't recall her name but she is very friendly and helpful.

I think its Debra.

Anyone here know of some good auto insurance here in St. Louis?

I know this is kind of general, but how difficult would you say Medschool is (how many hours of study/day) particularly at SLU? Just getting anxious to hit those books!

Every waking moment until you feel your ass turn to jelly and your brain turn to tapioca and you just want to scream but you can't because all the blood that was in your vocal cords have traveled to your now tapioca-filled brain.

heh, j/k, I don't know. I think we'll all figure things out for ourselves soon enough.

I'm sure we will find out soon enough. I Heard Hawaii started not so soon ago and had 3 chapters for the first night. Does that sound about right?

Does anybody know if they tape the white coat ceremony? My parents wanted to know.

Plan on studying 7-8 hours per day, including weekends. More on days leading up to exams. Med school isn't for weenies. 😀

You'll never learn it all anyway.

I don't know if there's any benefit to studying 7-8 hours a day. Maybe on days leading up to exams but I'd end up eating my book if I studied that much every single day.

Just you wait....hahaha

well, my brain doesn't function like that. I will study very frequently but in shorter sessions.

Hey guys,

Its over the waitlist wait over..it was bound to happen. I just got an email from SLU saying that they could not accept me this year. Good luck to those of you who are in SLU, I'm a bit envious but unless I get into drexel (slim chance), its off to kick academic butt at SGU...

at least you got an email - i got nothing so far...

Hey, long time reader, first time poster. I've been out of town for a week and I think my SLU mail still goes to my house. Do we just show up at the college church tomorrow at noon or was I supposed to get further instructions in the mail?

Does anyone know where the hell you park, and during orientation do we need to bring a backpack, folders, notebooks, anything? Or will they hand everything out to us. I'd rather not bring a backpack yet to orientation if I don't have to. =P

No I don't think they tape the white coat ceremony, they never offered it to our class last year.

As for stuff to bring to orientation. Just bring yourself, they will give you all the stuff you need. Maybe you can bring a Pen and Pencil if you want. For the parking issue I don't really know because I just walked over from my appartment.

The packet I have says to park at the Olive Street Garage (down the street at the corner of Olive and Compton)

AAARGH!

Today.. TODAY ... Saturday the 5th, 2 days before we start orientation, I get in the mail (dated July 27 - and mind you, I live in St. Louis) a letter from the SHC stating that my immunization file is deficient and my registration will be on hold until its complete...

What's missing? Proof of Measles and/or MMR.

What did I send with my forms? A pediatric immunization record stating that I got my 1st MMR when I was 1 1/2 yrs old and a 2nd MMR when I was 12.

According to SLU policy, you have to have either:
2 measles shots

or

1 MMR and a subsequent measles.

Now, does 2 MMRs not count as 1 MMR and a subsequent measles shot? Does anyone know? I'm sure I'll find out on Monday...

I haven't gotten an email from them yet either 😕 but I figured it was over friday, since orientation starts monday... 🙄

Officially I don't think it's over until the beginning of class.
