Yeah, I'm still deciding, sorry guys. I found out about my in-state acceptance on Tuesday, so it hasn't been too long. I'm leaning more toward my state school now just because it is closer and about half less in tuition... Even though I have a major soft spot for VCU...mbawife said:I noticed a thread by christi5784 and she has two schools in consideration still. I think some are still deliberating over the schools that they may have gotten into after May 15th - they do have 2 weeks to respond, right?
Yes you do.ShyRem said:Don't I deserve to get off the waitlist for that alone?

The more I watch ya'll suffer, the better I feel that I am no longer waiting for VCU. I would be going crazy.I hope it all works out but man, the VCU waiting game is LAME A$$!! DR. H, you can quote me. Accept/reject these poor souls already and get it over with. Oh I have a better idea, why don't you just drag them the $%^%$ along then reject them at the last minute. 👎

Bee09 said:guys i know it sucks, but the biggest advice i could give you is, try not to think about it!! easier said than done, i know. but if you try to distract yourself with some of the other things going on in your life (and you know you have other things in your life) then at least you won't keep thinking about it constantly...
one thing you should probably do (and most of you have probably done it already) is come up w/a back up plan for next year in case you dont get in. i remember having to scramble around to apply to grad school when i realized i wasnt getting in the first time. and then the second time i started looking for a job and essentially moving on with my life (though i did eventually get in, but thats besides the point)
so anyway i guess what i'm trying to say is that it for all intents and purposes, just pretend they rejected you. that way you can make other plans, and if you do get in it will be a pleasant (to put it lightly) surprise.

tvazhi said:hey guys,
Newbie here.
just wondering why there is such a huge interest for VCU? i keep hearing its got a great reputation but seeing as how theyre not ranked all that high, Im just a little confused about why people are so keen on attending. I have visited VCU and i really liked the people and the students were extremely nice.. but then a lot of the other people are worried about ranks and prestige and what could be not the best reasons to attend a school.
Does VCU dish out great doctors or give their students great residencies? Even the board scores seem to be on par with most other schools. Would you guys take UVA over VCU too?
Good luck to all those who are waiting, too!![]()

chicklett1 said:Hi guys,
I have spent the past few weeks planning to move to Richmond and getting really excited about VCU. The part that I was most excited about was having you all as classmates. However, today, I got into USC (Keck), and after agonizing over the decision, I've decided to go to LA instead. So, my in-state spot will be free. Also, I was getting a scholarship, so hopefully my spot and a little financial assistance will become available to one of you.
I know you all have worked so hard and are the type of compassionate, dynamic individuals that medicine so desperately needs. It was an honor to wait with you when I was still waiting, and I wish you all the best.
Good luck. I'm telling Dr H to let you in when I call her first thing on Tuesday!![]()

Chin up, you all are awesome.
No mango, you got in because you ARE HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀MangoKisses said:I happen to be a Thai female that got accepted a while ago. I am fairly sure that being an "Asian female" had nothing to do with me getting in. The designation of being Asian affords no one any benefits.
Vizsla said:okay, I dont think you guys understood my post...it had NOTHING to do with why some races get in and some dont. It has to do with how an admissions committee will try to keep the demographics/composition of a class consistent, meaning they will try to replace an applicant who has withdrawn with an applicant of a similar demographic (in this case, prob the similar applicant who has the next highest "vcu rank"). Whether you would like to believe that this goes on or not is your choice but I know for a fact that admissions committees do this. Im not undermining the efforts of those who have gotten it off the list AT ALL, anyone who has made it to the list in the first place has earned the right. Im just trying to suggest that perhaps a "rank" may not be the only criteria used when pulling applicants off the list and maybe this is why we are not told of our place. Im actually a little surprised that you guys dont know this occurs...why do you guys think student composition in incoming med school classes stays relatively constant yr after yr, you think that happens by chance? And by the way mango, I used "Asian female" as a completely random example...I couldve replaced it with polka-dot giraffe and the same would applied

MangoKisses said:If this happens, there is no way it would apply to Asians of either gender. Polka-dot giraffes aside. If you get into VCU, Vizsla, identify yourself and I'll be glad to discuss this in person.

Vizsla said:thanks but I think I have good idea of what we are up against in the app process. If a school historically has X% asians matriculating, then they will strive to keep this number relatively constant. If it can happen to whites and URMs, then it can certainly happen to asians
jbone said:Oh yea,
smart too. 😀
MangoKisses said:Re-read your original post. How do you think it sounds? Obviously I'm not the only one that "mis-interpreted" your comments. I know you're tired of waiting, and for that I am sorry. If you go to VCU, identify yourself anyway--it'd be nice to know who demonstrates this kind of attitude while under the shroud of anonymity.
I just finished the certificate in physiology program at MCV. The hospital isnt in the best part of town, but its not in the worst. The hospital is located downtown , and downtown Richmond has a decent amount of crime. I know the administration at MCV/VCU are activley trying to improve security around the hospital. As far as living goes, students typically live downtown/fan area or out in the west end. There are several high rise apt buildings downtown and a couple of smaller apt buildings. Id recomend checking these out individually, as some are in some sketch areas. The fan area is west of the hospital and the undergraduate campus. Id recomend living here. It is relativley safe, affordable , and close. There is a free bus that runs from the east edge of the fan to the medical campus. There are also a number of bus routes that run from around the fan to the hospital. The other option is livingin the west end of town , which is 20-30 min west of the school by car. There is a bus that runs in the morning and afternoon from the west end. Parking around the school is a bit of a pain in the ass and expensive. There is parking availible , but its several blocks away, and expensive. Let me know if you have any more questions.organichemistry said:Hey guys... I'm a pre-dent considering applying to VCU. Obviously it will be tough for you guys to tell me much about their dental faculty, clinic, etc., but I was hoping to get some insight on the city of Richmond and VCU.
Is VCU in a decent part of town? Where do the professional students live in relation to campus?
Thanks...
Dr.Phil said:Its so sad to see you guys ignorantly beat down Vizsla simply because he stated an absolutely true fact about this schools waitlist. I am surprised that its such a new concept to many of you but yes if a Polka Doted Giraffe, Caucasian, African American, Asian, or any other race drops out, the admissions department will try to find someone with the same race to fill their spot. This is an effort by the school to maintain their standard class demographic PERIOD.

Orth2006 said:Perhaps Vizsla is right but his/her comment about this issue was not stated as a matter of fact. He/she had been bi*ching about the VCU process, not knowing his/her spot on the waitlist etc. So his/her last comment about matching demographics was along the same line. I know the internet sometimes diminishes a persons true meaning and intent but its not difficult to see that the particular post was out of frustration rather than one of plain topical conversation.
Plus I don't see how that even ties into what he/she was complaining about. Why is it relevant unless Vizsla was suggesting that if it werent for the VCU process of maintaining a certain demographic ratio, that he/she would have probably gotten off the waitlist by now.
Thats how I interpreted the post and thats what I reacted to. Perhaps Mango interpreted it the same way.
Since I don't how VCUs process really works, I admit I dont know. But I am not ignorant for reacting to the premise that Vizsla established by the comment.
So dont make it seem as if Vizsla made a claim that the general public knew was true and then people are attacking him unnecessarily.
The truth was misused in a selfish way.
I am not trying bashing you Vizsla I just wanted it to be known why your comment didnt sit well with some people myself included.
We all in the same boat as I am still waiting too.

thanks!tacrum43 said:I've heard VCU described as a "good middle of the pack school". So, it's not a top 10, but it's not a low tier school either. Apparently it has a pretty strong reputation around the mid-atlantic area, but outside of there it wouldn't really mean too much one way or the other.
