I don't want no attention, but I felt I want to be heard. I mean realistically, bothering the admissions office just to find out the dates/time/# offers constantly and bumping this thread so it stays permanently on page 1. Thats inappropiate, childish, selfish, immature. I you really think I'm an attention seeker, I'll make this post the last, but you guys really need calm down and not try to overinflate yours and other people's expectations. Its just immature and painful when things don't work out.

Hey man while you may be right that people on this thread have stressed much over these several months, I think the big picture and the most endearing thing about it is that a bond has been formed on here. Sometimes its not easy waiting and waiting so having people going through the same thing makes it a little easier. Does that mean we all get admitted ? Ofcourse not - we all know that. Don't come on here to tell us how to express our emotions. You have an acceptance already (2 for that matter) so why does it bother you that people are stressing? Maybe if you were in our shoes you'll do the same. Either way just chill out. If this thread frustrates u, then DON'T READ IT!!!

Mixtli, it's become clear to me that you must be a very sheltered child. Because if you weren't, you'd be able to take this thread in better stride, as opposed to getting all bent out of shape.

Part of what will make someone a good doctor is the ability to put themselves in anothers' shoes (i.e. empathy). There are at least a few non-traditional aged applicants on this thread that truly do have their lives on hold as a result of not being able to plan where the hell they'll be in 4 months time. But, you wouldn't understand that because you're too self "involved".

Many have commented on how they appeciate the comradery that has developed on this thread. So, why do you continue to insist on posting your views on what you think is the correct way view this process? That's assuming a lot on your part, don't you think? Grow up, or, like you indicated you would, just don't post anymore. It seems that not just a few of us would appreciate that.
 
I'm a fellow waitlister (don't think that's a word) too. I read some earlier posts about people asking about their relative rankings. Has anyone gotten a response? I'd love to know if I actually have a chance or if I'm number 300 on the waitlist. Also, I was just wondering what ya'll put for the Fairfax/VCU option for years 3 and 4. I opted for Fairfax. I wonder if that's factored into the waitlist. If anyone has answers, PLEASE share!

Raving about a school you would love to go to is NOT going to hurt anyone's feelings. I doubt you would be making this same comment if the school we were raving about was Columbia or Yale. You obviously cant understand why any of us would want to go to VCU so badly and thats understandable, but thats your problem and not ours. And just as you have the right to post stupid comments, we have the right to post inane chatter and keep this thread on page one where it belongs. And again, as its been mentioned, if you dont like whats posted on this thread please do exercise your right not to read it. Thanks.
 
hi all 😳) another oos-er here also waitlisted... does anyone know if there's gonna be another round of cuts in a couple weeks after the alternate list gets settled? :luck: to everybody still waiting to hear from vcu or elsewhere. congrats to those who made it in. 👍

sk521, they have never historically (at least not that I've found) actually told anyone their relative ranking. The best I've heard is "it doesn't look good for you" and "I think you may hear something positive soon". They are absolutely masters about keeping their lips tightly shut with a fabulous smile and they don't play favorites. And I've never heard of them actually saying how many are on the waitlist, either. The CIA should be so well trained in keeping secrets.

As for whether we've heard back from Dr. H in response to our neurotic ramblings about planning the rest of our lives? Nah... if I was her I'd be taking today off. She worked hard the past two days, and I'm sure she's earned it. This time of the year has GOT to be hard on them (and they reassured us all at the interview they know how hard it is on us 🙂 ). Could you imagine? All these neurotic OCD applicants calling asking about their applications? Asking about their chances? Asking about when the next dates are? And some of the applicants, let's face it, aren't very nice about asking (we've all met this kind!).

I think they've earned a day or two off for the waitlisters to choose to remain on the list or drop off before hitting the season for the waitlist movement. Heck, I'd be tempted to send them a bottle of kahlua for their coffee just for putting up with us! :laugh:

As far as Fairfax goes, it does not make a difference.
 
how bout the accepted people? did many of you put down fairfax?
i did...wasn't sure how much i'd like richmond
 
Thanks for the help! I hope I don't have to wait till August before something happens because I'm not sure what policies mental institutions have towards checking e-mail on an hourly basis. And you know that's where I'll be if VCU doesn't take me soon! 😀

I've lived around DC my entire life, except for when I was in college. Doing the clinical years in Fairfax would be pretty cool. The thing is, if I go to VCU, the rest of my family is coming with me and I don't see us moving all the way down from here (maybe 15 minutes away from Inova Fairfax) down to Richmond, then back after two years. 😛

I am an IS who has also been placed on the alternate list after being on hold since the early decision process. I'm also on the waiting list at EVMS so I know what most of ya'll are going through. I wish everyone the best of luck and please post to let us know when anything changes. Also, anyone have any interesting info about the Medical Masters Program at EVMS? It looks appealing should I not get accepted.

It's sometimes hard to sort out all of the information because someone always chimes in about Georgetown (usually someone from Georgetown). But from what I understand it's a great program. About 75% students matriculate into medical school the following year, most of those at EVMS. The numbers seem a little higher over the past couple years, 17 out of 20 last year if I read the 2005 forum right. It seems to really help out your application especially at EVMS and I assume it would be a + at other places. I think I also read if you get a high pass in a class you're taking w/the med students, you don't have to take that class the following your if you're accepted to EVMS. Percentage-wise, it's about as close to a ticket to med school you can get for the following year but you've still got to work hard to be successful.

DrBoris, no difference b/t alternate list vs. waitlist. Same thing, different name. Most folks just call it a waitlist, WL or W/L for short. I think waitlist just caught on better because we're all... waiting.
 
Alright everyone stop jumping down Mixtli's (formerly known as Dr. Giggles) throat. He's actually a pretty cool dude and he makes a few good points, and at least he had the courage to man up and say what he said, even though I'm sure he somehow knew he'd get infants and grandmas giving him the finger for it.

Ya, okay so the waitlist was disappointing, but at this point there's nothing to do except forget about it and go on with life as usual. In this regard I admire bone's outlook, since he pretty much got over it and he's excited and enthusiastic about DMU (congrats on that, again, btw 😀 )

Maybe, just maybe at some point you'll get an email telling you to check your VCU status. If that happens you can probably bet that it's an offer, and then by all means please come back to this thread and share the good news! 🙂 But until then there really isn't a need to continually call the admission office or ask questions about the waitlist size / flux, because the reality is it's already predetermined and whatever happens will just happen. There's a saying that the water doesn't boil if you stare at it the whole time...

For those already accepted, maybe it'd be more efficient to start a thread in the allo forum instead of pre-med allo? That way you could just post important info on 2nd look, match results, etc, and not have to trudge through our rambling.

For those waiting patiently (like me), anyone want to start a donation pool for us to travel to CO and get some of that good food Shy is teasing us with? :laugh:

Joining FDoRoML in her attempt to keep this thread on page 1. How is everyone spending their wait? I'm working full-time at a completely non-medical job but finding it hard to think about work especially with SDN just a click away.

Anxiously running through possibilities in my mind of what I'm going to do about housing, insurance, moving (ack! moving!) when I have no clue where it is I'm going to end up next year (Norfolk? Richmond? DC?) and debating over whether or not I should send in a whopping $500- deposit to the Georgetown Special Master's Program.

I'm also trying to develop health education seminars in Spanish for a month-long trip to Guatemala in June. If anyone has any advice on providing health education in another language in another country I'd love to hear it (or just tips about teaching in general).
 
I'm spending my time pre-orientation working and making as much as I can. And of course, like Madi, stressing about the "where" and how to get there (move, where to live, etc). Not stressing ridiculously just yet, but I like things that are defined, I like to have a plan, so my version of stressing right now is just to plan as if I'm headed to both Richmond and HBurg and that way I'm prepared for either. Or so I tell myself!

Madi, what audience will you be teaching (children, families, health professionals, etc)? That will help decide how to organize your plans.

I'll be working in a small village in the northwestern highlands of Guatemala, near Mexico, most likely in a small school that serves children of all ages. There's a chance I may branch out into the community a bit, possibly providing some information on Type II Diabetes to a group of health care workers in the Department of Huehuetenago, but my primary focus will be to develop some health classes for the school.

Ugh, another waitlist.

I'm nursing a wicked hangover right now too. Fortunately, I took off from work for a couple of days since I had to interview at Temple the other day.

I actually will have internet access (how else will I obsessively check the VCU status page? 😉 ) so I'll be sure to keep in touch with everyone (and maybe beg for advice on occassion).

This is my first time posting, but I thought I'd let you all know that I got waitlisted and I am in state.

I know of 3 other in state people who just got waitlisted and of 1 instate person who was accepted.

At least we have a new magic date to wait for: May 15th.

Anyone received an invitation letter for the "second look program" from VCU? I was placed on the waitlist (OOSer, underrepresented) but received the invitation which, I guess, is supposed to be for accepted students.

I'm almost 100% sure that selecting the ffx option has absolutely no effect on your status. Apparently people change their minds up until the last minute anyways.
I have three friends that go there. One is in her 3rd yr at fairfax right now (omg she'll be a 4th yr soon!!!), and the other two will be 3rd yrs in ffx this fall.

Ha! Not just students... we actually had a visiting professor (from Turkey) who would show up at every seminar/meeting just for the free food (even when he was not at all affiliated with the department), and roll out after stuffing his face. I kind of felt bad for him. It seemed like he might not have a lot of money, or he was just a cheapskate (he wore the ABSOLUTE cheapest suits that looked like they were from the 1970s, and cheap cologne).

Med students are usually too busy to know about most things outside their little world, but wow, if you learn to follow grad students, you can usually find free food. It's sort of like the vervets who watch other animals to alert them to an eagle or leaopard that is approaching! :laugh:

Hi Madi,

Wow, that's really cool. Are you fluent in Spanish? Pretty much for everyone, I find that pictures are one of the best way to get a point across. Picture representations with a few simple words would be really memorable for all ages. For the younger kids, some kind of game or play-acting can help them remember important stuff.

I know there is a lot of "traditional" medicine in Mexico handed down from ancient native cultures. I imagine Guatemala probably has a lot of that, too. If you don't know it yet, you really should study up on it-- there can be conflicts with basic modern medicine and traditions that you might need to talk to the healthcare workers about.

You'll have to keep us all updated. Central America is a really beautiful place with lots of friendly and wonderful people... geez. Now I'm kind of sad... med school will probably keep me from traveling much. 🙁
 
Dr.H is starting to respond to emails. She really got hammered on emails on the 21st, so have patience. Apparently 35 people withdrew from the alternate list as of yesterday, but it's also apparent that this year they had a lot of outstanding applicants.

Pretty much said it's hard to predict until she sees how the withdrawals go. With only one day of withdrawals, it's hard to see how the list will play out - basically she said wait a month to see what folks are doing (i.e. withdrawing or not), and then she will have a better idea of where anyone stands. Makes sense. I'm encouraged, however, by the fact she didn't say "doesn't look good".

She's really a master of being encouraging while not giving out rankings :laugh: . She will be sorely missed when she retires in June. 🙁
 
I hope she reconsiders just incase I have to reapply next year. :laugh: I hope the next head of admissions is as cool as her!

If they interviewed 900, approx. 200 were already accepted, 200 were probably rejected, that leaves 500 of us on the waitlist...
