So for those who did not get the email, it's over 🙁

Fret not, phatib...using this thread I don't think too many people got that high waitlist email. Plus, i'm about 99.9% sure I'm dropping the waitlist within the week, since I'm very happy with my other options. As you see above, I'm not even going to the second look. If this is where you really want to be, I hope you get in.

Good luck!

I think the email went to the people on the high waitlist. So it is no more or less "over" for the regular waitlisters than it was before.

has it not been "two weeks" twice? has anyone heard a firm date for waitlist rank notification yet?

The admissions office says this week or next week they will send out an email telling you how to get the rank info. They think they will have people set up times to call Richard Silverman to discuss things in person. That sounds horribly inefficient to me.

And one other thing- they said they will have us ranked into three groups and that you can even find out your ranking within your group (ie top/middle/bottom). Richard Silverman will know your approx chance of getting in based on this ranking, but it obviously can vary tremendously each year.

Has every one in the first tier been notified? its nice of them to rank us and let us know, it would just be nice if it didnt need to take so long, I guess they are still processing returned forms. The Yale Admissions office has always been very helpful i guess I have just been on pins and needles since november and would love to get some word

p.s. Thanks Choco for the update.

As I understand it after my discussion with the Admissions Office, no one on the general waitlist has been notified of their Group/rank. The high waitlist was a separate list, and those people received a different waitlist letter. The high waitlisters were also invited to 2nd look and are pretty much guaranteed admission (I think).

So even though you haven't been notified of rank, you may be in Group 1 and have a great shot at getting in.

Has anyone from the "high wait list" been accepted yet? Do we have any idea of how many people are on that. I just wish that when May 15 rolls around they'll let us know if we're in, but I know it can still take months....

I'm on the high waitlist and I haven't heard anything. The initial letter said they would probably tell us in April or May, but I'd sure like to know sooner rather than later. I have no idea how many ppl are on the HWL.

One interesting tidbit, though: I asked the financial aid director (Pam Nyiri) a question during 2nd Look Weekend, and I remarked about not actually being in yet, and she said, "I've worked here for 25 years, and there hasn't been one cycle during that time in which every single person on the high wait list did not get in." Not to say that this couldn't be the anomolous (sp?) year, but that's what she said...

That could mean that there was never a year in which NOBODY got off the list - but it doesn't mean that people haven't gotten off right? I've been sitting trying to decipher the logic of that statement. It essentially is "NEVER has EVERYONE on the high wait list NOT gotten in" Christ I need a cup of coffee.

I agree that her statement could have been phrased better, but I'm pretty sure what she was saying was 'based on what I know about past cycles, I think that everyone who is on the HWL right now will get in.'

Still, hearing that we'll probably get in and actually being in is very different 😱

If it makes you high waitlisters feel better, when I talked to the admissions office a few days ago, they said that almost 100% of their acceptees were still holding their acceptances. They expect a fast and quick drop in the days preceeding May 15, but as of now, they can't start using their waitlist since their class is overfull.

ha, this is probably the absolute antithesis of what will make me feel better 👎

I'd just like to say its nice to see this thread come out of hiberbation, the dead air was starting to effect me, at the enfd of all this I'll either be extremely patient or nuts.

haha, sorry. What I was hoping you'd get from my post is the following: don't feel bad that you haven't gotten in off the waitlist yet because they haven't started taking anyone. They know that many people will chose other schools over Yale (from past years experience), and they are expectiing people to drop like flies in the week of May 15. Hopefully you'll hear back from them soon after May 15 with some good news.

Heh. I totally knew what you were trying to say, CK, but man, I started laughing when I read it. "If it makes you guys feel any better, there are absolutely no spots for you as of now. Awesome!!"

Aw man I'm dumb, everyone else got it. I don't know why I am so easily confused by logic-y statements like those. I was seriously staring at the computer screen, head cocked (with a Napoleon Dynamite expression on) kind of counting the number of negatives and dependent clauses on my fingers. By the time I got done, it seemed like, "My friend's sister told me that she didn't hear that the administrator's cousin said that in basically none of the past years has nearly everybody not gotten off the high waitlist. But she's a compulsive liar. Not the cousin, the administrator."

Anyway, I think I've gotten it now. Miss Surge, are you still on the Yale waitlist? 😳

anyone get the email or find out about the call-in time?? what are they doing?????

Teehee. And yes, I am. I'm hoping Mr. Silverman is precise with our chances, so I can get the final 10% of me to accept that it'll take another year, and move on. =)

While I'd like for everyone on the waitlist to get in, I especially hope you do. A few people wrote some beastly things on your MDapp profile and it would be perfect for you to get admitted.

So how does this work? Call Dean Silverman and he gives an approximate percentage chance? That sounds so bizarre. It's like visiting the oracle from the Matrix: "You've got a 40% chance of getting in. And, oh, don't worry about the vase."

I haven't gotten this status update email. Anyone else in the same situation?

I wonder if I can email Mr.Silverman and ask him to give you my place. I loved Yale, but I think I'm just meant to be a west coast girl... But I really want you to go there.
:luck: good luck :luck:

Haha. Do it. 😉

there is a good chance I may expire from anxiety exhaustion before I actually get to talk to Dean Silverman about my chances, I know its a waitlist but please throw us a bone some time soon

anyone get an email today?

I got one on 5/21/2006 (which is really odd since that's a Sunday) saying we can call about the waitlist starting sometime this week. Didn't anyone else get that?

I got an email 5/15, told me to call regarding my status. When I called the next day I was expecting to hear where I was on the waitlist, and to my suprise I was offered a spot. I've pulled out of everywhere else, I'll be in the class of 2010. Good luck to those still on the list. If anyone else is definatly going PM me to say hi.

Ben

Yea the email came in Sunday saying we can call in Tues-Thurs from 1:30-3:30. Let the busy tone begin

did anyone call

Couldn't get through in time (today).

We should start a POLL thread to see how many SDNers are in Group 1, 2, or 3...

After about 30 calls in a row (literally) I finally got through. They are kind enough to take down your phone number so even if you get disconnected they will keep your place in "line" and call you when it is your turn to talk to Silverman.
mid-group 2!! all you accepted students - now would be a great time to choose a different school 🙂 please

I don't think that's the case... Silverman as well as current students and SDN posters all seem to say that the order is pretty closely defined by now and the only thing determining whether you get in (at this point in the game) is how many people drop. letters and phone calls and emails won't change your position much, to my knowledge.
(i worked 1-9:30 PST so i was around in the morning to make millions of calls)

Did he say what your chances were? How many people are on the waitlist?

Thanks for your input Jack. Exactly how is the conversation with Mr. Silverman? To be honest, I'm quite nervous to speak to him -- I don't want to say anything wrong...

Also, did he give you a probability or percent (ie 40%, 60%) of being accepted given your position in the tier system?

Very easy, comfortable conversation. Don't be worried! He did all the talking except for questions I asked. He stayed far away from probabilities/percentages and did not give numbers of accepted or waitlisted students, but I thought that they let in 100 at first, have 20-30 in group 1, 30-50 in group 2, and everyone else (200??) in group 3. 100 because they talked about being so precise with enrollment, 20-30 based on SDN, 30-50 because 2 is slightly larger than 1, and 200 is a crazy guess.

They let in 176 initially. http://www.yaledailynews.com/article.asp?AID=32410

called Silverman today. he said in an "average year", they move through all the group 2's and start getting into the group 3's in mid June. however, he said on above average years, they dont even get through all the group 2's.

and no, he didnt say if this year was average or not-- too early to tell. he said he'd know more in mid June. (sigh)

Btw, if anyone is in group 3-- did he give you the shpeel that you're in the "cusp" of group 3? not sure if he tells everyone in group 3 that to make them feel better.

I think dopaminesurge had a post about if this is an average year, you will be admitted speech from Silverman.

Has anyone been told they're Group 1 but not gotten in yet?

I'm a group 2 myself, and he said "upper half." And yea, he definitely isn't saying how this year is going but he said that if I didn't hear from them, to call back mid June. June 15th it is! (I will call in a panic then)

Yeah, I did. I think I got the same speech as the guy MChou's responding to.

Sigh. I'm not holding my breath. I get the feeling that if I don't hear by mid-June (he said 13th for me) then I already know the answer. Call I will, though, Call I will.

Hahahahaha, he said 13th for me too! But he then said he was just "making up a date" and thought that would be a good time to call him. So I figured I'd give it a day or two.

Wait, group 2 or group 3 dopaminesurge?

I think you have to start a brand new thread, not just a reply post. If you make one up, put a link here. but then again, i doubt there are that many people following the yale-wait-list thread anymore. only a few lonely stragglers like us.

btw dopamine, I'm almost in the identical situation as you-- either pulled off waitlist by yale, or must reapply. good luck!

I got the "cusp" line, plus was told to call back soon to see if anything has changed. Good sign? We'll see!

Hey Yale waiters. I hear there are some accreditation problems going on up there, and the school is in danger of losing money for federal financial aid. Financial aid awards given for next year may end up replacing staffords and perkins with higher interest unsubsidized private loans. You should post this shiit on the Yale thread in the allo subforum. :luck: :luck:

Hahahaha. Hmm, yes little did people know that the "Yale System" actually stands for "When we say we accepted you, we actually waitlisted you. And vice-versa. So on June 13 we'll call all of the waitlisters and let them know."
