davematthews....the way it works is after you submit your secondary and a file reviewer looks over you're entire file (rec letters, essays, gpa, mcat, EC etc...) then ranks you.....that rank number determines whether or not you will be able to get an interview.....but it's nothing like they'll consider lower GPAs at a later time....they consider everything once they have your secondary then rank you....that rank # determines whether or not you will get one, also the number of interview slots remaining will be a factor of course
 
i just got interviewed at VCU a few days ago...just was wondering, will they wait to give all the updates (accepted, hold, rejected) of ur status on march 15th? or maybe if u get rejected will they tell you earlier? any replies would be greatly appreciated. thanks!!

You will most likely get your first update sometime within the next month to say that you have gone to committee and you are on hold. You will definately not hear whether or not you are accepted or waitlisted until March 15. I guess if you decided to mock/curse your interviewer, they might go ahead and reject you on the spot. But if your interview wasn't a complete desaster I'd plan on being on hold and getting the real news 3/15.

if you interviewed/file was reviewed by adcomm post-january acceptances, do you have a better shot than people who have been on hold since september and october? the reason i ask is because those people have been passed over multiple times for acceptances while people who just got reviewed have yet to hear anything. is that why some people who interviewed earlier on are saying that the best they can do is waitlist?

i don't think you're necessarily at an advantage....it really all depends on your score from the addcomm.....
 
So you are given a score by the Adcom. At each acceptance date they choose the cutoff point, which you figure would increase (get easier) as time continues. It could be a 1.5 in Oct, a 1.8 in Dec, and 2.0 in January, etc.

Thus if a person interviewed in September and got a score of 1.9 they would be passed over in October and december and get in during the Jan acceptances. So there is no major advantage, no major disadvantage.
 
Maybe I'll have a better chance at VCU now that I have all the Mod positions at SDN 😀

im in-state and i had my interview jan. 17th and loved the school. i've got my EVMS interview feb. 9th but i've pretty much decided that i want to be at VCU.

quick question.. do you think sending a letter of intent would make a difference? since admission is based on this priority scale, im thinking a LOI wouldn't really affect my priority number.

anyway, i'll be watching this thread from now on. good luck guys!

Well the letter of intent definately will not hurt. When I applied I sent one in basically saying that if I was accepted I would accept the offer. Whether it helped or not I have no idea, but I got in (last year).

They continue to grant interviews into February.

I called in and flat out asked if a letter of intent would be recommended or help. I was told no, once your file has gone to comittee for review there is nothing you can ever do to change the score. Now if you can get your letter in BEFORE committee then I'm not sure if her stern 'no' still applies.
 
Anybody really struggling to wait TWO MORE MONTHS for any word from MCV?

Well, two months isn't too bad considering I've been waiting since I went to committee in early October! I've already got four months under my belt.

Anyone with an acceptance to VCU wanting to trade for an instate spot at EVMS PM me please 😀
 
I have heard both sides of this but does anyone know if MCV offers exactly 180 or so spots so as soon as someone declines they take someone off the waitlist or do they begin to offer like 300 and then see what happens from there?

When I was there, the dean said they only accept 180....they won't give out more acceptances than seats. And the numbers of in-state and out-of-state seats are set as well. Hope that helps!

VCU's class size is apprx. 184. They won't give out more acceptances than available. March 15 they will present the remainder of their acceptances, and when they are turned down the administration will pick a student from the wait list to fill the spot. If an out of state black male is given an acceptance and he turns it down, a black out of state student from the wait list with the best priority score will be offered the seat.
 
To add to Pug's post: There are 184 acceptances, VA assembly has given enough money so that 104 are instate and thus 80 are OOS. This is pretty much fixed.

They don't overbook so there are never more than 184 acceptances out at a given time. Thus MCV ends up finalizing the class in the middle of the summer. This ends up being a huge pain in the ass for people on the waitlist because it gives you a glimmer of hope well into the summer when it would have been nice to know that you weren't going to get in.

Even though march 15th is when they create the waitlist, there is almost no movement from the waitlist until may 15th which is the date people holding more than one acceptance must give up all but one.

A significant amt of the class comes from the waitlist. Even though there was much less movement than normal last year, a good part of the class still came from the waitlist.

Once you are put on the waitlist drop Dr W-C (dean of admissions) an e-mail to find out where you are on the waitlist and how your chances look. Since she is new, most likely she will reply with a vague, I can't tell yet. Even Dr H (former dean) was not psychic and tended to give out relatively vague responses. However for those people who are at the very top and very bottom she will give a heads up as to your possibilities. Once about May 20th comes, if you havent heard anything still e-mail her again and she will be able to give you a much better idea of where you stand.

Although this wasnt really in doubt, I walked past the admissions office today and they still had up the 'go to room 1-00whatever for interviews.' This means they are definately still interviewing.
 
Thanks, Instatewaiter. Last year I emailed Dr. H and she was nice enough to say that it probably wouldn't be my year on the wait list, and I am hoping that Dr. WC will be nice enough to do the same this year.

Wouldnt it be nicer if she said you'd get in?
 
If this year is like last year, I was told they "would definitely get to me, but not until early summer". They never got to me (and my GOSH I wanted VCU - it was #1 on my list). Don't count on the waitlist. Last year was depressing for those of us on that list.

Keep an eye on the "withdrawal" lists that will inevitably start around 5/15.... very few folks withdrew from VCU last year. I sincerely hope for those of you in "perma-hold" that this year will be different. 🙂

I'm hearing a few conflicting reports of how the waitlist is at VCU. From what I understand.. normally a good portion of the students come off the waitlist but for some reason last year was an abberation and not many people were taken from the waitlist. Is this true ?

...i guess for some reaason they decided to granted 3500 secondary apps this year rather than 2500?? interesting...
 
wow that is interesting potus8585....i was looking back at some posts and saw you submitted ur secondary dec 29 and got an interview reallly fast....do u mind if i ask what kind of ECs u have? must have been something really impressive for them to give it to u that quickly....u can PM if u prefer...thanks!! and good luck🙂

Normally much of the class comes off the waitlist. I have heard estimates as high as 1/2 the class. Last year was an abberation in that fewer people came from the waitlist than in other years. The instate list was especially slow. However, there was still a lot of movement compared to some schools (since MCV does not overbook). A significant portion of my class came off the waitlist including me (which you can tell is how I picked my screen name).

So while last year was 'slow' it was still faster than a lot of schools.

The whole process would work a lot smoother if they would just tell you your queue number, but where's the suspense in that?
 
so they gave out more secondaries but did they say anything about interviews? did they interview as many ppl as they did last year this year(i heard that they gave out a lot more interviews last year than they have done in previous years)?

basically, did they end up interviewing like 200 more people since they gave secondaries to 1000 more ppl?

is anyone else preparing for MCATs again until they hear from MCV in march?🙁

when i interviewed there last week...dr. whitehurst-cook said they were giving out between 650-700 this year....and as i understand it that's normal....she specifically mentioned they gave out more like 900 last year but they're not doing that again....so i think normal amount of interviews...but they just offered more secondaries to people for some reason...

Hey every1. I'm pretty much in the "hold" boat as some of you. No good news nor no bad news (Does VCU also give out rejections during the decision days (Dec 15, Jan. 15, March 15)?)

A friend of mine who's also waiting to hear is going to meet with Dr. WC late next month for counseling. I'd like to know what she should ask her?

Are there any questions you guys got for her to ask?

Obviously she can't ask her priority score...but is it wise for her to propose studying for the MCAT again? Will that be mis-construed as an un-ready or unconfident applicant? Will that backfire?

She just graduated and is thinking about starting a masters program that she can easily drop if shes accepted to med school. Is that wise? This way, she would have grades to give if she is waitlisted and possibly help her get off the waitlist.

Also, what are you "waiting-to-hear" guys doing while waiting?

for everyone on hold status, there is nothing that can be done to help our situations, right? we just have to hope for march 15?

once we get on the waitlist, if we get new MCAT scores of good grades, that will move us up? who decides on how far up the waitlist you move, the adcomm or just the dean?

Nothing ever moves you up. Once you are given your score you are stuck with it, even if you update your file with a newly acquired 41 on the MCAT.

Dr. WC confirmed that while your position never changes due to an update, it can help you if you are tied with someone else at a particular priority score. But, since they usually factor in race and sex into this, you would have to tie with someone of the same stats.

Thus, if you were next in line with a priority score of 2.20, and some other people had the same priority score, instate/OOS status, sex, and race, your update could help break the tie and get you in the door. I'm guessing the probability of a situation like this is very, very unlikely.

There's nothing that you can do, really. Other than try and keep busy doing whatever you do and not thinking about it much. This is my second year waiting to hear from VCU, and that's really the only thing you can do to keep you from going cccraaaazzzy.
 
Just withdrew after being accepted...I hope some other OOSer gets my spot soon. Good luck to you all!!! VCU is a great school!!!
 
Did anyone who got waitlisted last year meet with the dean to see what they should do to improve their app? If so, when did you do it and do you think it helped at all?
 
I made an appointment as soon as I could. I think the earliest she had was in april sometime. In her office, the dean can tell you more that she would be able to in writing (e-mail).

Plus would be nice to know what you need to do to get in next year if you dont come off the waitlist.

In terms of helping you out this year, it will not do anything. You cant change your score
 
If I interviewed jan 18th but still haven't gotten a status update, should i be worried? thanks!:luck:
 
next offer after jan 18th is March 15th. you will hear by then.
 
at my interview last week, the dean said they are makin 80 offers come march, this is b/c they have mad 150 offers so far, but only 100 ppl hav accepted their offer thus far...

wow...sounds good to me. she estimated half that when i interviewed in january. i wonder how many of those offers are gonna be OOS.
 
but what if all of a sudden people start accepting their offres? then will they reduce the offers? I didnt think MCV overaccepted..just the bare minimum of accepting?
 
wow pretty interesting....i don't know for sure, but it's most likely a reasonable guess to say that the people who turned down the seats are more likely to be OOS people
 
i think someone posted on here that they were meeting with the dean later this month for an advising appt. a good question would be to verify this fact of accepting 80 ppl, double what they were planning to.

that would be amazing if it was true. if someone made this up, you suck.
 
anyone know if VCU has a second look day/weekend?
 
on a random note....i think it's ludicrous that some students (thankfully i wasn't one of them) are interviewed by medical students (even more so because you only get 1 interview at vcu)....i was wondering what you guys thought about that

i'm curious, How does it make any difference? Don't they have the same say as a faculty member? I had a faculty member but another girl interviewing with me had a student interviewer and she said the interview was great.
