UNC has definitely sent out secondaries to OOS applicants, and from what i understand (website and otherwise) this is supposed to be automatic interview.

One of two "essay" choices on the secondary was: "List five characteristics your interviewer should know about you."

It says on the UNC website: "We will review all applications and will email supplemental application materials to those applicants who we decide to interview."

I completed my secondary about a month ago (OOS). I remember there was conflicting information regarding automatic secondaries. The instructions indicated that the OOS secondaries would be reviewed before interviews are granted.

I hope you are right. I'm just ready to hear from them. Would love to visit the school.

Bad/unfortunate news.

So i called the office today. It is only for IN-STATE applicants that a secondary means an automatic interview. For us non-residents, theres an additional screening process. This seems a bit strange given that the secondary is essentially nothing, but that's how it is. So much for thinking I had my first interview lined up.

What an up-and-down week this has been:

Vandy rejection-->UNC secondary/interview-->No interview after all

ugh.

hey, on the Wake application, is there anywhere to know when they marked you as complete. it says I'm complete, but I dont really even remember when I sent the thing in. today is the first time I've actually navigated thier website.

see, I found that site, but it doesnt have a date for when they confirmed you (unless I missed it). I just want it for a reference of when to call.

I think he knows that...he just wants to know if theres a way to know when you were complete (in the past). I don't really think so. I just noted that one day my status changed, but do not know how they officially recorded it.

Good luck to everyone applying to NC schools! I'm an M4 at ECU, feel free to PM me with questions about Brody and the bustling metropolis that is Greenville. Good luck, y'all!

I'm an NC resident with decent stats (3.7 BCPM, 31 MCAT) but have yet to receive a secondary from UNC. I was verified by AMCAS on 7/20 and received an email from UNC a few days later saying outlining their application procedures. I've heard that UNC can be slow--has anyone else been waiting for a couple months?

Combination of they want money and the LOR.

Good point about the LORs. For some reason I wasn't even thinking about those.

tpw: I'm not sure what's goin on with yours. It's true they DO take a while, but I know i'm an OOS application with decent/good stats and have received my secondary (verifed 8/20 ish). It's always difficult to decide when/if to give them a call, but I would think to do so somewhat soon.

i'm betting secondaries go out automatically to all OOS; having received one reflects on nothing but one's OOS status.

I'm pretty sure that's not true (regarding all OOS applicants receiving a secondary). Almost positive they have two sets of reviews (Pre-secondary, pre-interview invite). Thoughts?

THat's what their email suggests . . .

For tpw, I don't know if it makes you feel better but it did take them the full 6 weeks suggested in their email for them to send me a secondary (I'm claiming in-state).
And, OOS and In-staters are screened. They are just somewhat more stringent with OOS first giving the secondary and then with the 2nd review of the app whereas in-staters receiving a secondary are guaranteed an interview.
However, for me, the process is not going so smoothly. Carolina is questioning my residency so I had to fill out more forms and then they said they would get back to me. Its not looking so good at the moment.

Hey,
My friend told me that most in-staters get an interview. Is that true? I just want to know how many in-staters they interview and how many of those get in.

Thanks!

They interview ALL people who can verify in-state residency. There is about a 10-20% chance of acceptance after that. Check the MSAR for specifics.

I do not have the MSAR thats why I was asking.

I don't have the MSAR either. Thats why my numbers are fuzzy. They are from the US news 2003 med school book.
However, I have already determined that many of those book's stats are rather out of date. (e.g. Chicago-Pritzker got 2,800 apps in 2002/3 and got 7,000 this year). I think there has been an increase in apps across the board but hopefully not all schools got 4,000 more applicants this year.

Two weeks ago I spoke with a gentleman on the phone who seemed enthusiastic about my application and guranteed I would be hearing from them within a couple of days, a week at the tops. For some reason, though, nothing... I guess they are busy.

So, pretty much everything you hear about Wake Forest liking applicants who show interest is true. I sent them an email (pretty much about nothing, just to make contact) and got the following reply:

"Your application is complete with us and has been placed in our top
interview pool. This means that you may call us and schedule an
interview at your convenience. Please use the phone number below. Our
interviews began on Monday, September 25 and will go through Friday,
March 9. Thank you for your interest in Wake Forest."

Of course I'm happy about the interview, but just thought it a bit strange for them to say i'm in the "top interview pool" though I had heard nothing from them. If you're still waiting to hear from WF, send them an email & you may be pleasantly surprised!

NO, if the MSAR says this because they're counting only the people that filled out secondaries as applicants. When a secondary=interview, then 100% of the in-staters will get interviewed, but less than 100% will get secondaries. I'm pretty sure they don't interview every in-state applicant. I think my pre-med advisor (here at UNC) said they used to but now there are just too many of them.

You are right that they don't interview/give secondaries to all in-staters. I wasn't clear enough. But if an in-stater gets a secondary and can prove residency then he/she has an automatic interview. And, again I don't think I was clear in my previous post. I was not quoting the MSAR, merely suggesting that someone who has it look at it.
Sorry for the misunderstanding / confusing post.

Does anybody know how many in-staters UNC interviews and how many actually get in? Just want to know the chances after getting an interview at UNC.

Thanks!

How long did you wait to email? I was complete on the 25th, and the email said wait 1-2 weeks.

Has anyone heard back from UNC about scheduling an interview? When would they start to contact people if they haven't already?

I probably waited about 2 weeks before emailing Wake. They never did send me a "complete" email, but the site said I was.

Depends on whether you're IS or OOS. I'm IS and just went to my interview on Monday. I mailed in my secondary in late August and got a phone call ~ 2 weeks later to schedule the interview. If you're IS, they should contact you soon if you've mailed in your stuff and uploaded/mailed your LORs. If you're OOS, they'll do a second round of screening before sending out interview invites.

has anyone here interviewed at ecu? i have one coming up there soon and just wanted to see if anyone had any advice! thanks😀

From what I know about the school, you should talk about rural medicine and your interests in it. That's their specialty. However, I did not apply there, so someone else might give you some better advice.

My interview at ECU is Friday.

gluck sally... and the rest o'all y'all.
on a short hiatus from ms2... fall breakizzle!

Congrats. I didn't hear anything from them last year until I gave them a call in mid-october. It's a nice secret about Wake.

i heard that duke med gives all applicants who went to undergrad there an interview as a courtesy

i thought that too, but apparently it's not true. a friend of mine who went to duke did not get an invite (but he's thrilled with unc med 🙂 )

Im very frustrated with UNC. Its been a month since the guy told me "Decision has been made regarding interview, you should be very hopeful though I cant tell you the decision myself...youll be contacted ina couple days" and nada.

Thats rough. What are they waiting for?

I haven't even gotten the secondary yet, though!

Woo! I love to see the Wake Forest praise 😉

**Let me be the first to say this to those of you really interested in Wake: they invite some to interview right off the back, then they rank the rest of you, and sit back waiting for you to call and check your status. MANY were invited to interview during a status check call, especially if you're on the High Interview List or whatever they call it there. So, be sure to call the office a few weeks after submitting your secondary!! This is how I got my interview, and future acceptance!!**

So, I've heard the same thing about calling Wake. Here's my problem: I got the email saying my application was complete about 2 weeks ago. So I called today to check on the status of my application (secretly praying for an interview invite) and the lady looks up my application and tells me its complete and they have everything they need. Clearly, I'm not on the high interview list, so what do I do? Do we think she made a note that I called? Should I call again in a month or so?

bumping it up for the NC peeps. I can't answer your question about Wake, but maybe someone else can.

Lots of :luck:

I'm not really sure the advice for this situation. From what I understand, they have more people in the "Top Interview Pool" than they can actually interview. That being said, I have no idea whatsoever how they make a decision to move on from that pool and into their other groupings. But you should definitely wait before contacting them.

I would say wait 3-4 weeks, and then send then an email. Mention that you are curious about your app because you are particularly interested in your status at wake. It is not necessary to *call* to get the interview invite--I received mine in response to an email.

Found it. BUMP

Anyone heard from UNC lately?

August MCATer haven't heard anything about secondaries from Wake Forest and UNC (in-state.)

I heard of someone who got accepted to UNC yesterday that interviewed in mid-late September.

I interviewed early October and they told me it'd be 6-8 weeks before I heard anything back...sigh..

I hate to keep bringing this up, but I've been through two different application cycles with UNC and most people don't hear either way until April. Even though they tell you you will hear in 6-8 weeks, unless you are a very strong candidate they will most likely wait until the spring to let you know.

Just trying to make the wait as least-agonizing as possible. Even though you interview in October, don't be disappointed if you don't hear anything until March or April. Very few people get in until the end of the application cycle.

is it ok to call after 6-8 weeks if we haven't heard anything?

my interviewer told me that i could feel free to email her and ask her about status if it's been 8 weeks and i havent heard anything..so i imagine yes it's ok

Nice that this popped up today. Just got my UNC invite. Exciting!!

Yea, it's weird that i asked today.

I wish I could say it came to mind because I too had received an interview invite, but alas that is not the case. ugh.
