so for some rather odd reasons, I'll now be throwing an app in the direction of Wake (just as I thought I was finished with secondaries. anyone know what kind of things they ask on the secondary?

pretty straight forward. I think you just have to elaborate on your activities, st like describe one where you impacted someone else, and one that impacted you.

Hey Thanks,
Im not sure exactly when my app was complete, but I sent in the secondary application on July 27th, and my letters of rec. should have already been there prior to that date, so I would say i was complete sometime early August.
Goodluck,
Kevin P.

congrats on the interviews! do you remember when you were complete at wake forest?

i hope you have a better outcome this time around :luck:

I'm an OOS, even though my father owns a house and is from NC. I talked to UNC, now I'm hoping that they'll shoot me a secondary/interview. This would be an awesome opportunity.

I also can't wait to go to my Wake interview on Oct 3rd. I called to check my status and they offered me an interview, so heads up to anyone waiting around. Good luck.

So does anyone have an idea what exactly it means to get a Wake secondary? I mean is it a pretty good indicator that you will get an interview?

I was always thinking that Wake didnt really give that indepth of a look at your AMCAS when deciding if they would hand you a secondary (i.e. everyone with 29+ gets a secondary, or something like that). I'm beginning to think that's not true anymore? Anyone know? 😳

Bump - I'm wondering about this too...

From what I've seen, Wake doesn't have a pattern. I think the point is to be persistant and show interest for an interview. If they know that you REALLY want to go there then I would think they'll offer you an interview. Though this is just a guess on my part.

My Wake Forest secondary was complete 8/10 and I received an interview invitation yesterday 9/7. I'm an OOSer. I don't think filling out a secondary automatically means you get an interview but I'm not 100% on that...🙄

Actually, Wake and Carolina only send secondaries to the applicants they plan to interview. They just don't schedule the interview until they have all of the info they need (i.e. suppl app and LORs).

UNC screens for the secondary and then again for the interview for OOSers. After my file was complete I received an email saying that a decision would be made whether to interview me or not by March...

I'm pretty sure a wake secondary doesn't guarantee an interview, b/c they only interview about 600 people every year. Be sure to call them after 3 or 4 weeks though to "check on the status of your application", as a common answer seems to be "you're complete and you're in our interview pool".

Calling Wake worked for me. Got an interview. (complete for almost a month).

Tried the same thing with UNC, they told me I was complete and thanked me for calling. Oh well. I guess I will wait.

so for people applying to wake... how long have you made your essays? I really have no idea what to do for this... I have a nice one page essay I'm actually planning on splitting in half.

better than me with UNC at least! They didn't even send me a SECONDARY, despite me getting interviews from much higher ranked state schools where I'm OOS! NC hates me, man.
jerks. 😡

My AMCAS was verified in late June. I got secondaries from Wake and UNC in late July. I checked the status page for Wake a few days after I sent in the secondary and had my LORs uploaded via VirtualEvals. It said I was complete and that I should call the admissions office to schedule my interview. At UNC, I mailed in my secondary on August 23 and did the LORs upload. A week later, they called me to set up an interview. I read on Wake's website that they only give secondaries to applicants they plan to interview (this is also on Vandy's website). I was told by the head admissions assistant at UNC that UNC only sends secondaries to applicants they plan to interview, but she may have been referring to in-staters.

Does anyone know when UNC invites OOSers to interview? My file was complete 8/16 but I haven't heard anything yet. I reckon if they want to reject me they'll send my a letter sometime in the near future and not wait til March!?? *sigh*

I was wondering this as well. It does say briefly, so I asked a few people and they said they thought that meant one-two paragraphs. I think one is too little, so right now I'm aiming for about 250 words. I'm also not sure how required the third is, but I'm going to try and do it anyway. Maybe why Wake? 😕

I split a previous essay in half and had 300 for the first and 250 for the second... I left the optional one blank because I really couldnt think of what to put in that space besides "Duke Sucks".

and seriously, what's with having an electronic application that you cant pay for or confirm online. it's ALMOST as bad as loyola's.

I hear that. Here's a good one: UAB. Says you can pay online, but when you get to the page, you can't. Says something like "This feature is still in development and will not be available for several weeks. You may want to go ahead and mail it in." Bah.

Hi all..

It has been at least months since I visited SDN. In a way, I am sorry to see people from last years NC thread. But I hope this application cycle would be a pleasant one.

I am currently planning to apply for 2008. I haven't submitted my application this year..but if I do..I will do so only for UNC, and ECU.

Right now, I am too busy taking care of a four week old and a five year old..

Take care all and best wishes.

S.

just wanted to ask if any in-staters are still waiting for a UNC secondary. Just that I got verified a while ago and did not get a secondary yet. What is up with that?

I'm OOS but it's nice to know I wasn't the ONLY person to go without a secondary. my stats are pretty ok, too...

2DEG! Welcome back! I hope all is well with your family, and good luck preparing for your next app.

Hey guys, its been awhile, busy with school...yeah...anyway just wanted to let you know that UNC will start regular interviews later this month, not sure on the exact date but there haven't been any interviewees here yet so no need to panic. Also its a general rule of thumb to be patient with the UNC Admissions staff. If anybody has any questions about the interviews or what UNC is like or anything feel free to ask. Good luck.

I got off the phone with UNC staff a short while ago. Gave me some very encouraging news =) and also said that within the next couple days OOS interviews should be heading out.

i just received UNC's secondary today and i've been verified for almost 6 weeks. that can't possibly be a good sign! anyone else in the same boat?

just to reiterate, UNC is very slow and hard to predict as far as secondaries/interviews go. I know it's frustrating, but that's the way it is. Also, they will tell you that you'll hear something 6-8 weeks after your interview, but for most people they won't hear anything until March or April unless it's an outright acceptance. That's not to say that if you don't hear anything until spring that you will be rejected, but their general policy seems to be that they interview for a long time and only accept a small percentage of applicants before March/April. I think they just want to view the entire interview pool before giving out all the acceptances.

As for ECU, it's a long year's process with them as well. I interviewed last year about this time (september) and I got my rejection letter in March. They're pretty non-rolling admissions, so that's to be expected.

The most important thing in this process is to stay positive. It's hard when so many on SDN seem to be getting interviews and acceptances, but the acceptances only stop going out when classes begin.

I'm not applying this year. I'm having some health issues and am not up to another grueling year. I also am not sure I can handle the 7+ years of training in my current state of health. But I'll be around if anyone has any questions. Lots of :luck: !

My AMCAS was verified 8/3 and just got the UNC secondary yesterday (9/14).
I am complete at Wake and ECU so hoping to hear from them soon. I am a pseudo-in-stater (meaning I hope I can plead my case for residency but it's not clear cut in my case).

I was wondering about the NC schools' record regarding #interviews out of #applications and #accepted out of interview pool.
Anybody have any idea? I've been looking for these stats but can't find them.

Have you looked at the MSAR? If those are the numbers you're looking for I can post them, just let me know.

NC State residency is a NIGHTMARE . . . i've heard countless stories of people getting denied. Those stats are in the MSAR, I think they interview somwhere around 100 out of state applicants, and from what I hear they really want you to have a strong connection to NC if you're OOS. Best luck to us all, Chapel Hill is a great town!

I don't have the numbers from the MSAR (because I don't have the book). Could you post the numbers for Carolina and the other NC schools? Thanks a lot.

For the UNC Secondary, did anyone do the list of qualities? If ya'll did, did you just list specific qualities or like wrote a sentence or two? I'm confused

I did the list of qualities. I put my the quality in a sentence because otherwise I felt that it sounded like I was writing descriptives for a dating Web site or filling out a bland job app. I could also qualify my characterisics, e.g. adventurous but not a risk taker, and could describe a quality that wasnt necessarily just an adjective and noun, e.g. I work well when I have a lot of challenging tasks to accomplish- not just saying hard worker.

Just got UNC's secondary today (OOS, so i'm pretty excited). Question: Were you guys able to fill in the qualities on the otherwise "fill-in" form? There does not appear to be a space for me to do so.

UNC: Secondary Received (OOS)
Wake: Complete and waiting
Duke: Nothing yet

So, to everyone who called Wake and got an interview or just called and "checked your status," what did you say when you called? I mean, I would just say, "Hi, I was just calling to check the status of my application," but I'm already complete. So, doesn't it seem kind of weird to call and say I'm checking my status? Won't they think, "hey, idiot, it's on your status page." I just reeaallyy want to go to Wake Forest, and I don't want to screw anything up by calling and seeming stupid or not calling and seeming uninterested. Agh. Any advice?

About the UNC form- I was also unable to fill it out on the computer, or at least a large part of it. So I did what I could and hand wrote the rest.

Calling Wake- I also knew that I was complete from the online status check but just called anyway and said, I was wondering if you have everything? They said yes and that I was in the top interview pool, would I like to schedule?
They said they would email me the interview packet and I have not gotten it yet. It's been almost a week. Should I call them again?

Yeah I am wondering what to ask them too!

i called because i never received a "complete" email like my status page originally said i was going to. even though the status page then said i was complete, i called just to make sure.

Hey, thanks, that makes sense. I never got an e-mail either, so I'll just act like I'm calling to make sure they really have everything. I just became complete yesterday, so I'll probably wait a week or two to call, so that I can be relatively sure the admissions committee has seen my application. Does that make sense, or is that waiting to long?

Thanks again for the help.

i was complete 8/9 or so and waited two weeks. so if you wait a week or two, that should be fine...i'd go closer to two though.

How soon after returning the secondary to UNC should one be expected to be contacted about the interview? And how long do they generally give you between that contact and the interview itself? Thanks.

I don't think UNC has finished interview selection (at least for OOS). I have not seen anyone on SDN who has gotten a UNC interview yet.

I mailed my secondary on 9/8 and got an email at the beginning of this week stating they would be calling me to schedule the interview. I have yet to hear from them.

UNC has definitely sent out secondaries to OOS applicants, and from what i understand (website and otherwise) this is supposed to be automatic interview.

One of two "essay" choices on the secondary was: "List five characteristics your interviewer should know about you."

It says on the UNC website: "We will review all applications and will email supplemental application materials to those applicants who we decide to interview."
