2007 Non-Trad Applicants' Progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My experience has been somewhat different wrt bringing spouse to interviews, esp those that have socials the night before. Most TX schools so far have been cool with it, though I was curious about other folks experience esp non Texas schools. Financial issues aside, this may even work to your advantage. At one of my interviews the interviewer wanted to meet my wife - she did after the interview was over. She was impressed at the initiative of bringing the wife and we talked about family for some time.

That's great--I'm glad you had a different experience! 👍 (We must be more uptight here in the upper midwest! )

Sorry, I don't know about Wake Forest, but if this helps anyone, I do know that SOs are welcome at the social the night before interview day at MCW. (None of the schools I interviewed at had any such gatherings.)

Secondaries are complete at Pritzker, Penn State, and New York University; Temple and Pitt are in progress. I'm taking a break now, as I just wrote a nice, eloquent four paragraph "Why Temple?" essay, only to click "Save" and get the Login screen of death (since apparently we get timed out after 30 minutes). If I think about doing anything more with that secondary today I swear I will throw my laptop through the Panera window.

Still waiting for the MCAT score. I go through periods of supreme confidence in one of two options: (1) I did very well and will be fending off interview requests left and right, and (2) I will die homeless in the street. 😳

hey, if you finished that pritzker secondary already, you should give yourself a nice pat on the back! 👍

sorry to hear that it didn't save. I'm so paranoid about that happening to me...so I do everything in word first and save it a million times before I put it into the secondary field box (even if it's a 50-word description!). Take a break for the evening...you deserve it! 🙂

Still waiting for an interview invite. we need a waiting smiley. this one will do: :scared: I am about to submit my AAO... oh, whatever the letters are, I'm applying to a few DO schools: erie, philly, new jersey. If I don't get in this time, I'm moving on. It helps to have the new app to focus on, it makes waiting easier. 👍

Came back from my Texas Tech Interview and the interviewer was a non-trad. She was commenting on the unique things we bring to the table. And then my phone (email alert) starts to vibrate loudly in my pants. It was an email interview invite from Creighton (my 10th interview invite..woohoo!).

Most places I've interviewed viewed non-trads in a very favorable light. I just hope they feel the same when they hand out acceptances. :luck: ya'all!

So far I have had 3 interview invites, from Western U, AZCOM, and NSU.

and one acceptance letter! I know where I am going next year and can leave the application mess behind me! What a weight off of my shoulder!
😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

anyone applying to U Mass early decision program? Has anyone gotten interviews yet? On my online application there is a number saying "admission 3580"? anyone know that that number means?

Rock on! Well done. Now put in a good word with the adcoms for us. 😉

AWESOME!!!!

And congrats to Y-Marker on all the interviews.

I see AACOMAS has mailed my apps, so hopefully busy with secondaries soon!

Just to follow up on this. Wake is cool with the family but no dice with Creighton. Also Creighton student hosting costs $40/night?

Thanks MJB! Good Luck mate! :luck:

Got an interview invite for a week from Friday!

Then I should have a decision a little over a week later.

This is getting nerve-wracking!

Woohoo! Congratulations! You'll be popping open some champagne a couple weeks from now 👍

my update: submitted AACOMAS but waiting for my 6 transcripts to arrive. sent an update letter to Pitt. Waiting. Congrats and good luck to all :luck: 👍

31 of them. Got 4 DO interviews and no MD interviews.

Congratulations on the interviews Fili! That's great!

That's a ton of secondaries...My max will be 8.

Well, it's my second time around and I do not want to go through this again. Expensive and time consuming though. Best of luck to you MJB!

Thanks! Looks like I'll be filling out secondaries and writing up my Organic II formal report on spice oils this weekend between smoking ribs and watching football.

Just got my secondary info from Creighton...I feel "official" now! 🙂 Even if I've had 2 Creighton Alums pretty much tell me I don't have a prayer there.

Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock...

Waiting for the MCAT results...

Assembling LOR addresses (my committee letter apparently didn't go out yet, despite my providing a list of addy's back in June)...

Doing the G'town, Drexel, and GWU applications by hand...

Yee-hah...

What do you mean your doing the applications by hand?

This waiting process is stressfull. I have been completed 22 supplementals so far and haven't heard anything from anyone. Except GW where I was placed in the eternal holding pool. I have been complete at most places for around a month now. I would feel so much better if I had one interview.

The Early Decision acceptances just went out. This means that reviews of other applicants have just gotten underway. It's still early and not to have an interview at this point means NOTHING.

You can make yourself crazy by attempting to compare yourself to what you read on this website or what others tell you. Some people LOVE to feed into your insecurities. You can allow this to get to you or you can do something else (like work on your Plan B) and take the process as it comes.

No matter how much you worry, you are either going to get in or not. The amount of worrying does not change this. The amount of angst does not change this. The process is out of your hands and there is nothing that you can do about it.

Why not, take a vacation?
Why not, volunteer at a homeless shelter and really help others?
Why not, teach someone to read?
Why not, start a solid fitness plan?
Why not, ramp up your study skills now?
Why not, organize your house for efficiency?
Why not, work on your Plan B (that is what you will do if you do not get into medical school)?

Why not do anything except sit and make yourself anxious over something that you cannot change at this point? This is a waste of energy that makes you feel worse and does nothing to further your career.

The middle of September is still VERY, VERY early. I have a stack of medical school applications on my desk to review and I will not be touching them unitil after I give an exam that is coming up. Your's could be in my stack if you applied to this medical school. At any rate, do something productive.👍

It is hard not to compare myself to people on this board. There are so many pre-med super stars it is amazing.

Thanks for the advice and the support njbmd... I know it is still early.

.PDF issues on my laptop - I don't have a printer at home, so I have to print the applications wherever I happen to be. I've completed my degrees, so I don't have free printing anymore, and I'm not going to pay for the time it would take me to sit at the computer at Kinko's.

Even on the forms that allow for electronic submission (e.g., Drexel), I get processing errors (and I've tried this at multiple computers).

Oy. I'm waiting on verification and a premedical committee interview dependent on LORs. I have to admit, I keep getting those "What were you thinking?" moments, but then I remind myself that I paid for the whole shebang, might as well see it through. I also unfortunately keep getting the "you won't make it" speech from folks, but at this point I just want to get it done and hope for the best.

Good luck all!

So I got put in a "smaller pool" = HOLD = REJECTION @ MCW this morning. The Penn State Interview invite later that afternoon helped cushion the blow.

For some reason MCW didn't hurt as much - perhaps because it's not an outright rejection (just yet). 😳

Mayo I fear would hurt more if they reject me. :scared:

Still waiting, waiting, waiting on the MCAT scores - I just got a letter from WVU saying that they're going to wait to get the scores before sending out the invite for the secondary application.

In the meantime, I heard back from the review committee for my two studies, and I have to do some rewriting before I can submit to the IRB. 😡

The research group I'm working with is putting out a critical care nephrology textbook for which I'm first author for a few of the chapters, but some of the guidelines have been really, *really* nebulous. A personal favorite: "Discuss the genetic influence on renal failure in about 1000 words." Great; pre-renal, intra-renal, post-renal? Animal models, too? I have a three-inch stack of articles just from 2003 on covering a huge variety of kidney illnesses due to gene polymorphisms. That's like saying "The heart: discuss, in comprehensive detail, in 1000 words or less." Double 😡 !

Bah!

Got put on hold at Penn State (=rejected). So far, 4 rejections and no interviews. Blah. Still waiting for AACOMAS to recieve my transcripts (3 accounted for, 3 to go) Hopefully I'll have more luck once my DO apps are in. At least the pie I baked today didn't burn...🙁

I'm feeling your pain. I also have 5 rejections so far and the one that hurt the most was a state school I really wanted to attend! Bahhhh...

I was reading a thread called "how many interviews do you have" and I was shocked at everyone who had over 5 😱 Although they can only go to one medical school so it won't really matter in long run that they interview there.

It is still super early. Keep your head up! AACOMAS hasn't recieved my transcripts yet either🙁 Are you going to apply to the new school?

PS.... I love Pie.. mmmmm...😀

No, I'm not applying to the new one since it's in Tennessee. but there's a new one opening in Pittsburgh next application cycle. So if I dont get in this time, I'm there.

I went to check on my transcripts last night and suddenly remembered I forgot to send one! Why did I remember now, two weeks later? Who knows. So, now its going to be another week or two until I can be complete. Oh well. At this stage in the game I've learned not to get too upset over things you can't change.

Good luck to all is no-interview-invites-yet-ees!:luck:

Oh, and this is post 888 for me. I don't know why, but that pleases me.

If I could get one of these darned secondaries converted to Word from PDF, I would be a very happy person in the near future...This is driving me nuts.

I'm starting to wonder if it's acceptable to just hand write these things.

If you have the full version of Adobe Acrobat 7 you can "type" on your PDF using "typewriter mode."

My interview is done - I think it went well.

Now I wait for at most 9 more days ........ fun. :scared:

good luck! :luck: now try to keep busy for the next 9 days. that's one things kids are good for 🙂

which ones do you need? i have the full verison of adobe acrobat, and i've converted a few of them. let me know if i can help.

Got my first rejection today. The good news is that it was at what I considered to be the absolutely crappiest school I've ever been to. Horrible facilities located in an expensive town in a terrible neighborhood. I also had a terrible interview.

The good news, I learned a lot about where I was weak in interviewing...

It's like they had the test before the professor gave the exam. They seemed to know exactly how and what to ask to get me totally flustered. However, I'm better for it, because it brought out my weaknesses and even before the official rejection (I knew with an interview like that I would even have rejected myself) I started working on my weak areas. Which just lead to two interviews that I felt went terrific. So I guess, thank you crap U 😎

One the other hand... Somebody hold me :scared:

I'm really sorry Filibuster. 🙁

The one I'm having the most trouble with is KCUMB's. My IT Dept. converted it for me, but the embedded tables and stuff are really making it difficult. I'm about to just hand write it. I could be done by now.

I might sit down and work on it a bit again tomorrow night.

The beauty of it is, I have a little while to get my secondaries in, as they won't even look at me until MCAT scores are released. I'd still like to get them all in this week if possible.

Fili, sorry to hear about your rejection, but you only need one "yes".

I'm really sorry Filibuster. 🙁

Thanks Y

But then again, I meant what I said. This school was at the dead bottom of the list of 40 schools I applied to. I got a chance to learn what a terrible interview feels like and a chance to improve where I'm weak for the schools that I really want to go to. I have 4 more interviews coming up in the next month and you can bet I'm going to take what I learned from this into those.

I'll be just fine 👍

btw: I'm serious. It's not out of spite for getting shot down. This place was a real dump.

officially rejected from hopkins MSTP and MD program...oh well. 🙁

I got an invite for an onsite interview with Mayo! I was literally jumping up and down at work cuz I was so happy!!

A rejection from any school sucks but one from Mayo would have hurt...a lot. I'm so glad I'm getting an opportunity to go present my case in person there. I still think about some of the questions I got asked during the phone screen.

Mayo 😍

i'm sorry scenitimint. but you were too good for them anyway. i know many acceptances lay ahead for you 👍

congrats Y! and good luck at the interview :luck:

as for me: still no interviews. but I tried on my suits yesterday and they still fit despite my recent weight gain, so I'm taking this is a positive week...

Hang in there everyone!
